Master of Puppets [Elektra, 1986]

I feel a distinct generation gap between myself and this music, not because my weary bones can't take its power and speed, but because I was born too early to have had my dendrites rewired by progressive radio. The momentum of this band can be impressive, and as with most fast metal (as well as some sludge metal), they seem to have acceptable political motivations--antiwar, anticonformity, even anticoke--fine. Problem is that the revolutionary heroes I envision aren't male chauvinists too naive to know better, they're not Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan the Barbarian, all flowing hair and huge pecs. That's the image Metallica calls up, and I am no more likely to invoke their strength of my own free will than I am the 1812 Overture's. B-
>>
>>70006586
Classical can get pretty aggressive tho.
Beethoven's fifth? Nicolo Paganini? Krystovsky Pendereki? Mozart's Requiem?
It's pretty dark and aggressive (or at least parts are) and it's not always Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

i'm convinced that the reason why young people today hate metal so much is because of the popularization of god-awful nu metal in the early to mid 00s. every time i've had a conversation about metal with normies, the only bands they bring up are system of a down, disturbed, and slipknot.

no wonder people think metal is shit. it's just a shame they're too stubborn/ignorant to dig deeper.

reminder that listening to music that facilitates sadness is no better than listening to music that facilitates anger or aggression. listening to music is all about getting an emotional response out of it. stop acting so self-righteous and grow up. also, maybe grow a pair of balls while you're at it.

it is a related argument though. sadness/apathy/self-pity are all very beta and un-masculine emotions. sure it's healthy to feel them every once in a while, but if you fall back on them too often you're gonna come off as a pussy.

I was into nu-metal in middle school, but I didn't get into "real metal" until like senior year. I started listening to stoner shit (Electric Wizard, Sleep, Sabbath, Boris) and went from there. I'm starting to get bored with the genre's lack of variety (and quality content), though. I wish there were more decent metal / punk-influenced hip hop acts.

maybe funeral doom. i'd still say that in general doom metal is pretty masculine. i mean you don't hear pic related singing about how they can't get girls or whatever.
>>
>>70012257

OK, but non-funeral doom still deals with a lot of sadness and some apathy, probably not so much the self pity.

Honestly, I think these things can be more masculine in music if it's handled in an endearing way rather than an over-dramatic "oh woe is me!" way.

Metal seems very derivative to me. It seems like as soon as a unique band comes along a thousand imitators quickly follow suit.
I suppose this is true of all genres, but with metal the bands will even go so far as to dress and act like each other, not just sound like each other.
I mean, look at this image. You can barely tell these logos apart.
>>
>>70012495
black metal has a very specific and consistent aesthetic. it's not like they're copying each other due to lack of creativity (for the most part). They're copying each other because they all want to be a part of that aesthetic.

same thing with vaporwave and other post-internet stuff.

plus that's all just the visual aspects of it. musically, metal can be super diverse, even black metal.
>>
>>70005698
I'd really like metal if these growling voices weren't so fucking gay and all over the place.
>>
>>70012610
yeah harsh vocals definitely aren't for everyone. i hated them at first too, but they kind of grew on me.
>>
I like Sunbather, Botanist and Sleep. I can withstand bands like Megadeth and Black Sabbath for a while but they wear thin. What else would I like?
>>
>>70012610
I hate them because of how artificial they sound. I guess it's meant to sound primal and animalistic but to me it just feels forced. It's a very deliberate affectation, not a sound humans normally make. Screams, shouts, I've got no problem with them but I hate growling.
>>
>>70012664
>not a sound humans normally make
yeah like you said i think it's supposed to sound animalistic and inhuman. i don't really like growls either, but if the music is good and the vocals aren't super loud in the mix i can usually look past them. also growling is usually only used in death metal so it shouldn't be too hard to avoid.

There's nothing wrong with metal. People who actively live a "metal lifestyle" are more cringe inducing than the music itself. That barely has anything to do with the music, as much as just living by a specific music genre's aesthetic extremes. I can't help but feel that this association misleads people.

People who are insecure about seeming masculine listen to metal. People who are insecure about appearing to be insecure about their masculinity (i.e. people who are insecure about their masculinity but are slightly more self aware than your average metalhead) will go out of their way to bash metal.
