Post albums that would be better if everyone just plugged straight into their amps and made a regular brit-pop album instead.
Can someone rec me something like this? Ambient/droney shoegaze.
>>69975531
you probably know lovesliescrushing right?
probably the most essential formless ambient shoegaze thing there is
rec me some obscure walls of pure bliss noise
is there any good non-bm mealgaze out there?
i know the angelic process, jesu, and HANL already
kind of looking for a more stoner-y vibe but i'll take pretty much anything
>>69975514
"no"
>>69977079
Ambersmoke, Life In Slow Motion, Wreck and Reference, Airs, Planning For Burial. Pretty much anything on the Flenser label is stuff you might enjoy, haha.
Also I'm gonna be a douche and do a shameless self-plug bc catchier droney metal-gaze is exactly what I make too. :B

Have fun!
>>69977335
awesome thanks pal,
i like airs and planning for burial so i should like that other stuff too

Maybe the prettiest
>>69975451
this album is fucking incredible
how come it hardly ever gets talked about?
>>69987178
because spacemen 3 was better than spiritualized, although spacemen 3 is hardly talked about either
>>69976710
I'm also interested in this
guys I need more like Whirr and Nothing, is there anything out there?!?!?!?
I like Psychocandy, Loveless and Sunbather
what can you niggers recommend from here

The first two Place to Bury Strangers albums.

Ambersmoke need more recognition, they could use better quality control but Une Femme and Wear You love Like Heaven are top tier gloomcore
>>70002077
New Album's pretty inconsistent but I'd kill for even an EP from them full of stuff like Spoon and Looprider
Throw in a Flood/Feedbacker-esque track in the middle and it'd be perfect
Say what you will about each respective album/band/whatever,
Which of the Big Three has the best opening track?
Ride - Seagull (1990)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In9yq3oNqCg
My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow (1991)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBxJGg6cjqk
Slowdive - Alison (1993)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDg8ZFSkJOY
Alternatively, what's your favorite opening track off any /shugazi/ album?
>>70002256
Only Shallow because not only is a great song it's a great impact and I think surmises the sound and essence of the album well almost immediately.
I didn't realize Ulrich had done another album. Gave it a listen and was pleasantly surprised after his previous one wasn't that great. Pretty much more of the same sound but the mixing is a lot better, sounds crisp and layered.
This song in particular is great. Electronic beats in shoegaze are something that need to be explored more often

Any other albums like Grandeur of Hair?
How noisy can I get before I'm just listening to Merzbow?
>>70002256
They're all all tip-top tier, but I'm leaning towards Seagull
>>69999231
>>70003293
these are different
>>70003546
fuck, I meant the one i have is different, anyone got the clean version of those?
>>70002256
imo Seagull > Alison > Only Shallow
Favorite /shugazi/ opening is easily Meth of a Rockette's Kick off of Boces - which isn't talked about around here but it's noise pop so w/e
>>70003581
Ask and you shall recieve.
>>70002256
My pick's Seagull but from any album it's gotta be this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG4-Tantvhc
>>70003667
>Seagull > Alison > Only Shallow
You are aware that > means greater than and not less than?
>>70003738
yes and I used it correctly
>>70003704
safe senpai
>>70003762
I fully admit my taste is completely safe. Loveless and VDC are just good, okay?
>>70002256
I havent listened to the other two that much,so they are more or less equal to my book(still pretty sick)
but Alison takes the cake for me,it's one hell of an opener,it incites so many emotions(happiness and sadness at the same time) that brings my enjoyment to the fullest, kudos to Slowdive
Alison>Only Shallow=Seagull
if you had put Leave Them All Behind,I'd rank it higher than mbv
>>70002256
Only Shallow > Seagull = Alison
>>70004151
Alison = Only Shallow >> Seagull
>>70002370
The way that chord gets pitched up then starts the chorus in a new key is super cool
I love his melodies, they're kind of cheesy but work with the dreamy synthy sound he has.
Fuck, that's it for today. There's probably 100 hours of music on this, impossible in 3 days. I have failed already.

Alison wins that hands down. In terms of favorite shoegaze openers though I'd have to go with one of these two, that first Pale Saints riff instantly puts a smile on my face every time and the Autumn's Gray Solace one is just one of the best dream pop songs I've heard in general on top of perfectly setting the tone for the entire album. It's a shame neither band ever gets mentioned here.

Barely dreampop but
>Fade Into You
Also partial to Guggenheim Wax Museum, that one blew me away the first time I heard the album. The ambience starts and you're expecting another Quick One, then BWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
>>70009542
>>70009444
Oh shit, Fade Into You is the opener isn't it? I think I have to change my vote to that as well, one of those rare songs that gets stuck in your head for weeks on end. Just a shame the rest of the album isn't up to par.
>>70003359
Have you looked into Astrobrite yet? They're pretty damn noisy.
>>70010199
I was actually really surprised by how great the title track at the end.
>>70009335

Anything similar-sounding out there shugazi brethren?
This FSA kind of has some of his prettiest stuff even though it's all space ambient.

Im looking for this band. I think they ar a recent instrumental shoegaze band from japan. They arent Mono. I remember the album cover was a wave or the sea (not Ride).

"Headache" from the new Grouper 7" is beautiful, easily one of the best songs she's done. I hope there's new material on the way and it's a little more grounded. She can write really great non-drone songs if she wants to.

Dog Star Man
Every time I realise how few landmark albums Shoegaze has I get sad. The genre has so much potential yet in my opinion the majority of the genre doesn't come close to Souvlaki and Loveless.
Where's the Cocteau Twins love at?
>>70038445
That kind of how all genres work.
Can't always be the best.
>>70040962
most other genres either have hidden gems or a larger selection of landmark albums, I can't think of another one with shoegaze.
>>70041073
you haven't listened to enough shugazi albums then. There's a ton of hidden gems/ underrated albums who don't get as much love as the classics.
>>70038445
>>70041073
Depends on what you even mean by a "landmark." It's a super niche genre so it makes perfect sense that there wouldn't be many highly acclaimed albums. That said, if we're just talking quality then there's loads of stuff up to par with the big three, "everything else is trash" is a meme kids who don't actually listen to any other shoegaze say.
>>70041597
>>70041601
I've listened to shitloads of shoegaze and I still can't think of any genre where the difference in quality is so big between the best albums and the other ones.
>>70038445
The original shoegaze albums that everyone loves were inspired by other genres. Maybe a lot of bands nowadays are only looking inward.
>>70042010
This is the issue.
It's the same thing that happened to post-rock after the 90s
>>70005694
I've been following this chart for a while but some of the choices are a bit bizarre. Like they'll omit a pretty big/important album in a subsection in favour of a lesser known one, or there will be the less appreciated album in a certain artists discography.
Off the top of my head for example for ethereal wave there's no This Mortal Coil or Dead Can Dance (Darkwave, yeah but the chart is already pretty loose with genres). Also why put Depression Cherry on there when there are 2 albums in their discography which people consider to be a lot stronger.
>>70032428
Just listened to it and it's instantly one of my favorite releases from last year. I would love a full album of this type of sound.
>>70042010
I disagree with the notion that shoegaze only has three good albums but definitely agree with this statement in general, we need more shoegaze that isn't trying so hard to be shoegaze. More bands branching out and fusing other styles can only be a good thing.
>>70042844
>I disagree with the notion that shoegaze only has three good albums but definitely agree with this statement in general, we need more shoegaze that isn't trying so hard to be shoegaze
I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. I don't like saying that I think shoegaze is dead because people assume I am part of the group of people who thinks that there is nothing other than souvlaki and loveless. There are loads of shoegaze albums I really really like made "recently" but I think that some people have the bar set a little low too. Numerous times I've seen someone recommend something and I'll take a look and find it doesn't really sound like anything I'd listen to more than twice at best.
>>70042664
Depression Cherry is the patrician choice for Beach House's best album though
>>70030208
Best shugazi of 2017 right here
>>70030208
This is gorgeous. Heavy, accessible shoegaze pop. I was thinking like MBV meets Beach Boys. Especially the walls of vocal harmonies that are all over this thing.
Does anyone here actually play guitar?
How do I get used to using the tremolo arm while I strum chords?
It feels so awkward

>>70045589
Just get a harmonizer pedal with a detune setting or a whammy pedal that has dynamic response.
t. Hard-tail player
>>70045589
You just have to get used to it. Try playing to some MBV songs since they do it a lot.
>>70045589
The absolute first thing you should do is bend the tremolo arm at the elbow so that it sits up higher from the strings. Otherwise it's going to be too low and you'll end up muting the strings with your hands.
They're easy to bend. I didn't have a vice so I picked up my bed, put the tremolo arm under one of the legs, put it down, then bent it.
