You'll be back. First time I listened to it I thought exactly the same thing as you. Definitely thought American Football was better. Later I started enjoying math rock more, but Spiderland still felt too harsh, too subdued, and not as much fun as the pop-ier, twinkly stuff.

Listen to it again every few months or so. After a year or two you will probably find that you really like it. There are some serious 10/10 tracks on that record.
