It was a poor attempt at keeping up with the times. Great album, even AOTY 2013 maybe, but a bitter letdown coming from Gorguts and a 12 year long silence. Had it been released by some up-and-coming band it would barely warrant an ambivalent positive review that would end with something like "keep an eye out for this band, one day they'll make it big"

Obscura is wild, unrefined and unpredictable. FWTH is like a streamlined, more "competent" version of that. I feel like taking that style and trying to make it more coherent just doesn't work out. I dislike new Gorguts stuff for the same reason - plus actual dipshit techie death metal noodling made it into the mix thanks to the outsider fags who are part of the band now. Gorguts without Steeve just isn't really Gorguts.

I find both to be an equally successful exercise in restraining chaos. Like DsO in Fas[...]. They're very similar but FWTH is just a learned version of the naïveté of Obscura. I still prefer Obscura, but FWTH is only second to it.

The DSO/Gorguts comparison is very obvious, but surface level. DSO never really felt like Gorguts and honestly, I don't really think it's a direct influence. Not like Ved Buens Ende obviously is. Not saying you made the comparison, but it's often made.

I don't think it's necessarily a problem on paper. I guess I just don't really like Luc's pedantic interpretation of Gorguts.

There was a point where Gorguts consisted of three Steves. The only way to top Obscura would have been to put a fourth Steve in the band, but by the time of Obscura's recording, they were already down to two. We'll never know what exactly could have been.

But in terms of melody and general feeling, VBE is much closer to DSO than Gorguts is. DSO really is it's own thing though. And since there were multiple people involved in the project, it was often multiple different things all at once.

Metal is not just noise! It can be quite deep and emotional! Here, check out these guys. They are really into Ulver, Filosofem, reverb, low contrast photos and repeating the same riff for 15 minutes. It's very atmospheric and I know this because there are distorted open chords.
