Is there any metal music that's like Trout Mask Replica? I'm talking about really cool sounding rhythms, structure that's constantly changing, complicated parts with two guitars that work together really well, etc. Trout Mask Replica was a really fun album to figure out, and even after understanding a lot of the songs its really enjoyable to listen to how all of the parts work together to make these cohesive, dense songs.

Here's what I liked. Feel free to tell me why I'm wrong or to give me further recommendations.
>Cradle of Filth - Hammer of the Witches
I'd given up on CoF being anything more than just okay after their recent releases were fairly uninspired and samey, but this is one their best albums.
>Galneryus - Under the Force of Courage
I'd never listened to Japanese music before, and I'm often wary of pure power metal, but in the end it sounded very much like Stratovarius whom I love, and thus I ended up loving this.
>Septic Flesh - Sumerian Daemons
This is good, perhaps lacking in variety a bit but I expect that such nuance will be exposed by repeated listenings.
>Nokturnal Mortum - Voice of Steel
This sounds a lot like Arkona, who I also enjoy. I really like the Eastern European style of including the folk music and instruments in metal songs; it reminds me of old Melodic Death (eg, Jester Race) before it became commercialised and the acoustic folk/medieval elements were purged.
>Trees of Eternity - Hour of the Nightingale
I've put this in the "like" list even though I don't see myself listening to it a lot. I liked it, it brought something new to the table and the style was interesting and even good, but I don't think there's enough diversity between songs; they all have a very similar tone.
>Mirrorthrone - Gangrene
Something I find about a lot of one-man bands is that they don't know how to get the best sound out of so many instruments. It takes most musicians their whole life to perfect the art of making music with their preferred instrument, and even top musicians only master a handful of instruments. Mirrorthrone hasn't entirely absolved itself from this problem, and the sound mixing could use work in places, but for the most part it lets the right instrument shine and finds a fairly good combination of emotion and musicianship.

This is good stuff, and fits right into the group of female-vocalist bands that I already listen to.
>Estatic Fear - A Sombre Dance
This was original, included folk and even classical elements, and lets the riffs shift patiently from one instrument to another. I enjoyed this quite a bit, though at times it could be a tad slow.

What I didn't like:

This wasn't very good desu, I found it pretty uninteresting and even amateurish. Not entirely without merit, but not really my thing either.
>Scar Symmetry - The Unseen Empire
This is okay, but didn't stand out to me. It was perhaps a little bit overproduced and American-sounding.
>Timeless Miracle - Into the Enchanted Chamber
This was a type of fairly generic metal that I despise. Sure, it's listenable, but the lack of originality made the music fairly boring. It reminded me of when my friends were all into Alestorm.
>Avatarium - The Girl With the Raven Mask
I thought this was interesting and unique, which is some of the highest praise I can give to music, but it wasn't really my thing. I might revisit my opinion in the future.
>Intestine Baalism - Banquet in the Darkness
This wasn't entirely intolerable, but the screaming style wasn't to my liking and I couldn't interest myself in it purely for the death metal riffs.

this sounds so amateurish to me and not the good kind of amateurish, the kind with illusions of grandeur. The folk instruments are so cringe worthy and cheesy it's worse than Dimmu Borgir with their fucking orchestra at times. Also I can't listen to this fucking slav pride pseudo folk anymore, just like any pseudo folk it's the pathetic sound of so called "traditionalism" that never existed in the form presented and comes across as nothing but mockery of actual traditional music.

I don't find the folk instruments that cheesy. They're used rather sparingly and often serve to setup certain melodies or phrases. The guitars and drums still carry the bulk of the weight. As for the traditionalist revival, isn't that kind of the point? Revivalism is (or at least can be) about incorporating tradition into modernity. I suppose one would want to display reverence for tradition, and not make a mockery of it, but it is customary to embellish certain elements of the past?

A folk metal album played totally straight (not cheesy at all) sounds like a real cringe fest to me.
