Has anyone here use tapes or reel to reels in their production? I picked up taec reel to reel at a thrift store for $4. It powers on and everything and I can fast forward and rewind the tape. Havent plugged anything in or out of it yet. Not sure where to get started with It I just want to use it for tape effects like tape delay or saturation.

I often pull my main bus through the a810 with some fresh emtec tape (these are great BASF spec'd tapes and still kinda affordable here) if I don't need crazy SNR. sometimes it's just neat to really push it hard and then blend it with the original file, which is great because that machine is steady as fuck with no wow/flutter at all

I like the feel you're going through but drums aren't cutting through the main mix at all. EQ the muddy freqs (usually mid ones for example at 500Hz) out of the voices and sidechain them to the drums, then bring those up.

>>69869379

>>69872310
start by going to Equipboard. check out what your favorite pro's are using, then get that. once you get those, go through the manuals of EVERY little plugin there is and try to understand EVERY concept the manual is talking about, even if it has to happen 3 times in a sentence. that's your starting point.

>>69872876
if you're talking about external plugs just go to Equipboard and see what your favorite producers are using.

I use Morgana for sampling as it's the closest I've been able to get to the S950 sampler I used to own and sounds to my ears at least better than the S2000 I now have - it's got a fairly simple interface so it would probably suit you well, but it's deliberately not going for perfect accuracy.

https://clyp.it/y0odgrad
>>

First start with an idea. Think of a melody, and fill in the blanks around it.
>>
h-how do I get better at Logic X?
>>
>>69880643
i'd suggest another stand tbqh. gigging with it becomes a real pain. overtime the adhesive foam strips for the support arms will weaken and start getting stuck inside.
>>
>>69882316
how do you get better at anything? Practice.
>>
>>69882316
step one: stop using it.
step two: download any other DAW

just got 'Kick 2' for a little under $60

>>
>>69882442
>i'd suggest another stand
Then please do.
My last stand was breaking at the welds, and A-frames are ungiggable. At least this thing won't take up much space, which is something I actually need for gigging.

Besides, shitty adhesive isn't really a problem, I'd just re-glue them with epoxy.
>>
>>69873830
FL is god awful for learning to produce. You should start by learning some basic composition theory assuming you haven't already and try getting your hands on Ableton, Logic or literally anything other than FLstudio. Having a physical keyboard also helps to start just randomly mashing keys and coming up with progressions and melodies.
>>
In which ways does Ableton beat FL studio? I've been using FL for about a decade, I've heard the old chestnut that 'pros' move from FL to Ableton but I can't really find any good reasons other than snobbery...
>>
>>69879447
The more you mix the better your ears will become at discerning good from bad. My advice to you would be to try to improve your use of multiband compression both for very large sounding tracks (Drums, Vocals and some heavy synths) and for mastering. Don't be afraid to start from the presets.

I like it. I think you've got a good lo-fi feel without just sounding like you recorded it with your phone in your ass. 909 sounds good, very chilled yet slightly energetic, feels like it could build into a good drop when you transition. Obviously I would suggest that you plan when you want to play this piece but other than that, it's well mixed.

I'm loving the sound design, the synth that starts at 2:33 is great. Composition wise it's solid, I wouldn't change a thing. The track is pretty groovy, especially the bass, but I think it might be a bit loud, sounds like it distorts a bit. Personally I'd try to sidechaining some synths to the kick because it seems to disappear from time to time.
>>
Who would have thought that after 11 years of formal music study, music production would be the hardest form of art to express myself with. Not photography, or design that I got into a year ago, not even writing. Nope - music.

There's a possibilty that I just have much higher standards here, though. But I was definitely surprised how tough it is to create a good sound or make a good mix.
>>
>>69884243
Thanks, I appreciate having actual feedback unlike in the Soundcloud share threads. I don't play my music live so I'm not really wise as to how DJs like a mix. Makes sense that the kick needs to cut through a bit more though
>>
Do you have any specific idea when you create music, or you just stumble upon something interesting and work on it? I actually (almost) never really thought about what I want to create and what is the actual narrative of a piece. That's probably why I'm having a real trouble finishing anything.

I go through songs then find a small sample

play around with it on a sampler playing different keys

Get a 2 measure sample of keys playing
Then add effects then record that audio to a new track

Then use it on sampler again and play different keys
>>
>>69884815
That's pretty dope, man! :)
>>
>>69884850
Its hard to know which song your creating when you do this area of creating music

I just find samples and then use them in my tracks by re-sampling them in theories I've created in music
>>
>>69884785
Personally I tend to create music from ideas but there's always an element of luck in there. I usually try to choose a few devices or a scale and base my track around that. I also like to look at people's art and try and craft miniature stories based on a singular character or motif and then tie it into the greater universe I develop across my work.

Was jamming to this.
Maybe consider changing the "can't escape the 'lectric chair" bit to make the vocal bit a bit more melodic and musical. I think it'd be a bit better that way. Also in the coda might be cool if you added in just one more instrument like a piano sound or something. Just to cap things off. The idea in my head is just simple like whole note chords with two notes higher up to transition between them, but I think it would be nice.
What's your setup?

okay thank you! I just recorded that vocal take so i wasnt sure about it either.

This song I just DI'd bass guitar to ableton and pitched it up for the crazy distorted leads. and used an sm57 mic to record the acoustic guitar bit and vocals. I don't have any analog gear besides amps :/

DSP means a lot in the audio realm. DSP can be anything from basic EQ and compression, to FFT analysis and resynthesis.

If you mean that you're looking for software to build this kind of stuff, look into Max/MSP ($), PureData (free), Kyma ($$$), and Supercollider (free).

I'm not quite sure what you mean by statistical side of DSP, and I live with a pair of statisticians. If you're talking about chance, randomness, sample sets, and algorithms, those programs will make you more than happy.

got a Zoom h4n recorder for Christmas
here is a recording on the basic stereo mode. sitting on a tripod on the music desk of a grand piano

http://vocaroo.com/i/s06JD5zVOgqF

I think its too close to the strings, suggestions on mic placement? or tips for recording a grand? it takes a tripod adapter, doesn't fit a mic clip. My brother had a good idea that I should get a suction cup mount for a gopro and stick it under the lid of the piano

one consideration you might want to make is to use a laptop an Expresscard slot so you'll have the option of a firewire card, if you want the option of using a firewire interface. I don't think many laptops come with an actual port.

Yeah, but it's fun.

Speaking of which, is 4 verses too much? The song is a little under 4 and a half minutes so it's not like it's too long (as far as length goes) but I can't help but feel like there's too many verses. Anyone have some input?

Shitty producer here. I'm guessing he sings close to the microphone using a dynamic microphone (SM57, SM58 or maybe cheaper). He then cuts out a lot of the lower frequencies. Then he adds short delay and/or short reverb.

How the fuck do I mix these vocals? No matter what I do, it sounds like they're like on top of the beat rather than a part of it, if that makes any sense.
>>
>>69900044
Because you have an intense doubling effect on top of them. Fold down to mono and check how weak they are there. Widening is fine but don't go overboard unless you want things to sound out of place (not saying that in a bad way). Also, ease up on your dynamics. You're basically smashing the limiter.

Make the low piano notes more stereo. Get iZotope's Imager. It's a multiband stereo enchancer. Like, let's say you wanna only made the low frequencies stereo and keep the high ones mono, you can do that. Other than that, I think it sounds good.

that's just how vst works, you need to bridge it
a few DAWs come with an internal bridge but since live usage is one of ableton's main things they don't support stuff like that, it's usually way less stable than just going the direct 64bit (or vice versa on a 32bit installation) plugins
so just use a 3rd party bridge (jbridge) like everyone else

You got a defective one then. Mine has been doing fine since I got it (1 month ago).
>>
>>69913805
which keys? where on the keyboard?

does this model have a mono midi port on the back?
>>
>>69913805

First thing to find out is whether the MIDI controller is sending multiple MIDI notes when these faulty keys are pressed.

If you can see that you are getting multiple notes for a single key press (and you have no setting on the controller that would enable something like that) then you either have a mechanical issue where a single key is operating more than one switch, or you have an electrical issue causing the same thing.

If you only see a single note recorded in your part then you'd need to look at either your DAW's MIDI routing or your choice of MIDI instrument's note playback settings.

Is there a way in Ableton, to adjust Volume instead of Velocity from the bottom part of the MIDI roll?

I don't want to adjust Velocity because it will change the tone of my drums (since they will run through the compressors and other effects differently).

I want to change their Volume after all effects, not the Velocity of the initial sample.
>>
>>69927232
Can't you just do regular volume automation?
>>
>>69927232

>>
>>69927336
I could use a Utility on each drum part and automate that, but it would be a nightmare to program. The current UI is fine, but it really should let you adjust volume for each hit instead of pre-effect velocity.
>>

there is a max for live midi effect called expression control that lets you map: velocity, aftertouch, or any other kind of midi signal to anything you want.

So you could probably map the velocity of each drum sample to a post-effects Utility, which would achieve what you want.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not a bad thing to lower the velocity and have the sample hit the effects differently. You don't want to have the exact same drum sample playing over and over and sounding exactly the same.

Hey just need a second set of ears on this, i am far from the mixing phase but wanted to make a house track,

i used "golden boy - that thing" as inspiration

need help though: anyone here use massive? if so how do you record automation while using a massive synth? I have some cutoff filters and envelope rates i can freely control on my midi keyboard but i cant figure out how to re-record that automation. Any help?

Here is a sample of the track i am working on.

if its a drum rack you should be able to select the volume for each channel.
