He's really peeling apart the skeleton of The Fragile in a way I didn't expect. It's fucking awesome how he's bringing stuff out like Feeders.
>>
>>69851513
I'm really glad about this release. I feel like a lot of people listen to The Fragile and can't get past its edgelord lyrics, but by removing the vocals you really get to appreciate the pristine production values for what they are.

At the same time, though, this compilation doesn't step on The Fragile's toes. Fantastic move on Trent's part.

I've been on /mu/ for seven fucking years, since i was 17 years old. It was considered very gauche to talk about Nine Inch Nails on /mu/ back then. It fills me with a lot of joy to see NIN getting so much love on /mu/ these past few days.

i don't understand how that goes against / disproves anything i've said when it's been stated in plenty of interviews and is widely accepted.
>>
>>69853859
Saul may have had more influence on Year Zero—I'm willing to grant you that point, although I don't know that there's any real proof—but it's just straight-up fact that instrumentals from The Fragile were used as the beats for a number of songs on Niggy Tardust.

He only used the DX7 in the studio until the fragile. Pretty hate machine has tons of DX7 pads and bass on it (although he used a lot of minimoog for that). Most notably on the downward spiral he used a lot of DX7s (live and in the studio). A lot of the "distorted synths" like that on Ruiner and Closer are just DX7 mangled to shit.
>>
>>69854142
Oh shit i didnt mean to say "Only Used" but you know, he used them up till that point.
>>
>>69854172
Is it possible that The Fragile is really The Upward Spiral .1.0, and we just got the ACTUAL Upward Spiral release today after he's in a legitimately positive place in life? The Fragile always seemed to be Trent actually wrestling with TDS in a semi-positive light even if he was still in a really turbulent place in life. Now he seems better off tto be quite honest desu fampai.

Those are the people who don't like NIN in general.

But how would things feel on the other side of that now, in a much more stable life place, mentally and physically, and with a new family? The incentive has changed. It's not about, 'I'm going to kill myself if I don't get this out of my head.' But the excavation and the architecture behind it, the motivation behind it, is similar."

"For some reason, when I started working more on Hesitation Marks, I started thinking back romantically about who I was when I was writing The Downward Spiral. I was looking back on who I was then and who I am now and how things have turned out, for better or worse. That was the air the new record was born in. I was looking at the other side of how I was not always honest about who I was in the '90s — and I knew I wasn't being honest — and if you sprinkle those negative feelings with some drugs and alcohol, it's usually not a recipe for success."

It's not the "happy" NIN record, but it's complementary to TDS. Tracks like "Everything", "All Time Low" and "Satellite" are the absolute antithesis to TDS.

Without going into depth, my feelings...

>NTAE is another 'okay' release and not a true slow burn, almost certainly rushed to validate his statement about new NIN in 2016

>TR will never end up humiliating himself like Al but I doubt he'll ever return to form

>serious shades of "giving the fans who didn't 'get' HM want they want here' and stagnation in the music

>TR maybe feels the only way to do that is through retrospection

Both looking forward to/dreading the new album. Reissues are nothing to me other than the unreleased Fragile tracks which I'll get around to later. I can't hold this EP against him but I hope it's not indicative of the musical and lyrical style of the next album because it's the first time I truly feel there was no real shift in sound.

Also:
>The Idea of You is Survivalism meets Getting Smaller done okay (don't think TR should be singing in his old voice here) and it only gets great at the end

>Dear World is destined to become a modern NIN classic like Copy of A and is probably the strongest track on the EP

>Field on Fire, sure enough after sounding fantastic on first listen annoys the shit out of me and I actually had to remove it from the rest of the EP because it screams "can't remember why The New Flesh was good" for entirely too long

Anyone else feeling this?
>>
Also, I did give the reissues a brief listen.

For all concerned, the Fragile and Broken remasters are purely preference here. I'd say if the 5.1 mix of The Fragile exists and ever comes out, that'll be definitive as soon as someone very capable re-mixes it back down to stereo. With Broken, I still say stick to the original.

As far as The Downward Spiral goes, it's a completely redundant remaster. The fantastic 2004 one easily remains the best mix. Keep that one, this one's just approaching further 'George Lucas-ing' a classic record.
>>
>>69862678
It's not groundbreaking or anything, but I see the shift in sound and production. At least it's more of a change than The Slip which was literally "dude striped down guitar/drum/bass sound like With Teeth LMAO" and some Ghost leftovers at the end
>>
>>69858718
he was also on oink.cd and more than likely was on what

he's probably on both APL and PTH right now as well
>>
>>69862813
can you please upload the definitives?
>>
>>69863104
Haven't listened to the definitives yet. What didn't you like about TDS definitive version?
>>
>>69863104
I will never understand when people say that The Slip sounds like With Teeth.

That "Garage Electronics" sound he described is great and The Slip's production is actually its strongest trait, as while everything after 1,000,000 and before Lights In the Sky through Demon Seed is a bit too weak for NIN, the general aesthetic is respectable. With Teeth was so very half Fragile with the non-stop shoegazey guitar walls even if the track is straightforward and half mainstream modern rock record with a weird albeit fantastic smashing together of Losing My Edge by LCD Soundsystem and Telekon by Gary Numan in the middle of it all.

I can't agree that it's more of a change since Ghosts was a double LP and therefore inherently more varied. Not meaning to overstate the lack of change though - it's not too much less of a change compared to some past works, but it's still the least to me, particularly in contrast to the last LP. It's almost as if we've skipped over the HTDA/Hesitaiton Marks era entirely but pulled through one track from it in the form of Dear World.

>>69863259
No, I can't unfortunately, but here's a link to the Fragile one that someone else uploaded yesterday: https://mega.nz/#!TNI3DR6L!cn67LS_abedqKHRRepQGGjQgEY0yAtbaAFsAKezMdL8

>>69863369
Not him but there's nothing definitive about the definitive version of TDS. Even if Trent was involved, he's a different Trent from the one that mixed the 10th anniversary reissue for SACD and 5.1 and I wouldn't take his word over 2004 Trent's word.
>>
>all these ''definitive'' editions

is Trent becoming George Lucas?
>>
I feel at this point that instead of working on their own projects, Trent/Atticus should form a band with Dave Grohl, Dave Navarro and Josh Homme, with Josh writing and doing vocals alongside Trent.

These people bring out each other's remaining strengths greatly, from what was good about WITH_TEETH to that Mantra song to that duet on the last QOTSA album. They're older and almost certainly, as evidenced by Trent making Atticus an official member (finally), their high points from now on will probably come in the form of spontaneous collaboration and not what they're used to from back when they actually had something to say.
>>
>>69858258
>I'm a fucking Idiot who has never listened to the new Fragile remaster and only see music as an age accesory.

Yeah you're the real autist here, dumbass.
>>
>>69862678
No. I think you are a namefag who should stop posting because of "muh innovation" bullshit. The EP is good, you just don't like it.
>>
>>69863823
I said that jokingly but really I think it's more along the lines of what happened with Hesitation Marks and its audiophile (aka 'the actual mix the label wasn't okay with) version.

Trent was working on remastering The Fragile since like 2009, when it was relevant. He announced that a 5.1 remaster was done around the same time as Hesitation Marks. I think he possibly had some involvement there, to the extent he could.

With Broken and The Downward Spiral, I'm not inclined to believe he did. I think this was the doing of someone else entirely, trying to make them fit in with how music today generally sounds.

Some guy thought that possibly couldn't be the case and went on ranting about how Trent loves digital limiting.

The reason I'm not inclined to believe that (starting with PHM in 2010) this is some kind of "this was my true vision" series of changes is because these "definitive" versions sound nothing like the music Trent is releasing today production wise. I'm concluding that it's largely beyond him until I know otherwise (those 5.1 mixes surfacing).

I never said I didn't like it. You've gravely misunderstood a very obvious point that has nothing to do with innovation. Innovation is a stupid goal in a period of time where everyone's already done everything and all that's left to be explored is how exactly the pieces sit differently.

...Did you serious say "muh" with 2017 right around the corner? Are you seriously so much a loser that doesn't get the contextual difference between a temporary name and a tripcode that you're falling back on "namefag"...again, when it's almost 2017? lol 4chan, never change.

Downward Spiral was about peeling off layers and arrival at a naked, ugly end. This album starts at the end, then attempts to create order from chaos, but never reaches the goal. It’s probably a bleaker album because it arrives back where it starts — with the same emotion.”

Nice. I grew up on NiN. Artistic but sexually-charged music, w/ screaming and noise. I love industrial, generally, to this day.

How can one not like this guy?

His music is shit.

He has some spicy opinions and him supporting Oink's Pink Palace is based but his music is terrible.

It is kind of tragic how the genius of The Fragile was found years after its release when it started to appear on movie trailers (300 and such) and people were starting to get back to it after With Teeth.

Gave the records a cursory spin and a quick A/B but I'm inclined to think the real problem is they don't have someone who isn't half fucking deaf and less than 30 in the staff.

Broken was super bright and taming it a bit isn't a bad idea but now it sounds so muffled I thought I had troll files. The Fragile has the same problem the old cd had but worse, it sounds boxy during the louder parts.

>bricked walled
The original recordings where made to be that compress. Did you seriously think they were going to remix the entire album and remove the original compression?
This is a remaster retard

Ah yes, the old asinine argument of " that's how it is in the mix " even tho we don't have those mixes, it contradicts good engineering practices and the multitracks we have access to don't show anything slammed nearly as bad as you imply ( anecdotal but still worth pointing out).

definitive editions all up on slsk

His music is good. You just happen to have shit taste, you contrarian piece of garbage.

>even tho we don't have those mixes
kek. look at the original redbook. look at the digital version of the original vinyl mixes that are on torrents. NIN has always heavily compressed parts to the point of brickwall. Some chorus parts on the fragile had fucking 30+ layered guitar tracks, you think that nets a dynamic waveform?

>multitracks don't show anything slammed nearly as bad as you imply
now you are just showing your ignorance on multitrack/bus processing in general
>>
>>69877964
NIN's always been really compressed, that doesn't mean it has to be made to sound worse. Really, A/B Last and tell me it doesn't sound stupidly blown out and muffled. A/B the last minute or so of The Fragile and come back saying it doesn't sound even boxier than the old cd did.

> multitrack/bus processing
My bad, went into ETS mode where people would argue everything got bricked as soon as it hit the desk.
