I think it might have been an America vs. European divide among the fanbases. In 2009 the average American scene kid had very little exposure to any European music period. The Euros generally played different festivals and tours than TBDM, who were often billed with bands like The Devil Wears Prada, Emmure etc.
>showing a scene kid Follow the Reaper would've been like showing him Madonna, and he probably would've preferred Madonna

You, my son, need to get yourself a media player with volume leveling. Until I started using MediaMonkey, I had no idea this was something I even needed, but I now I would argue that it is THE most important function of media player. Organizing and tagging and shit is great, but you can still do a lot of that at OS level. But hardly ever having to touch your volume slider? Bliss. I look back on those dark days and baka desu. I used to live in fear of temporarily deafening myself when my playlist moved to a new album, or of missing out on a great riff because it was too quiet, so I had to stop whatever I was doing, tab to my media player, bring the volume up... maybe even restart the track! *shudder*

Nigger, Pathé was literally founded in the 19th century after Muybridge successfully invented a kind of "rifle camera" to crudely take film of a horse galloping. He wanted to prove at a given moment, all four of a horse's legs would be off the ground. Then Thomas "I'm a huge faggot please rape my face" Edison went about copyrighting film projectors and film strips, but Pathé didn't give a fuck and continued to make cheap films showcasing everyday life, like waiting for a train

With rym, Metal Archives, and other resources, it's very easy to branch out and find stuff that appeals to you. I personally got into extreme metal largely through books which recommended the basics: Emperor, Immortal, Mayhem etc. Then I started reading reviews on SSMT, M-A, and ANUS and some defunct sites. I think it's important to get a breadth of music knowledge, instead of just clinging to the albums that become memes here. Even if some of them are great, like Soulside Journey, most are not.
