You haven't heard every living guitarist. Guthrie is a great guitar player but he's no better or worse than your standard G4 guitarist. Buckethead is pretty good man. Just because he releases 200 albums a year doesn't mean they aren't good. I like them more than most of his old material, besides Bucketheadland and giant robot stuff. Buckethead is amazing. Tosin is good too but Buckethead would win any day in any sort of comparison contest. Buckethead can slap too.

Yes I have heard it all, I was once a teenager, I know about all of that. The counterpoint and the harmony in Air, Concerto etc. is mediocre. The average failed composer in Vienna in the 1700's could write that sort of stuff on his toilet paper, composition students today alike.

Matt Pike.

Flashy guitar playing doesn't interest me, I don't care who is the best, I care about who is making the music that truly draws me in, I care mostly about tone and riff writing. Pike obviously nails that shit. The stuff he did with Sleep is legendary but there has pretty much never been a High on Fire album that didn't have amazing riff after amazing riff.

There are no "best"...only favorites- in no particular order

Mine:

Duane Allman- killer tone, ground breaking slide- great white boy blues that Aretha, Wilson Pickett, Jonny Jenkins all could appreciate

EVH- again with the tone, again with the ground breaking, great rhythm, said more in 15 second solos than most guitarist say in 15 minute shred fest

SRV- simply plugged directly into the divine and out thru his Marshall

Charlie Christian- just ripping killer leads that were way before their time...

Doc Watson- unbelievable flatpicking that fueled the genuine nature of his music. His music is like a historical document yet so fun and easy.

Steve Vai- so damn technically good but so damn quirky and funny- such an imagination...those who say he has no "feeling" just dont get it.

Derek Trucks- hes got killer chops and amazing on the slide but its more than that - no pretension, great reference and knowledge of the music, is more interested in making great music (in a 15 piece band) than simply wanking for hours.

Honorable mention:

Djiango- just ripped.
Nuno Betencourt- funkiest chops around-
Tommy Bolin- dunno just like his vibe
Al Di- again- just like his rhythmic-shreddy vibe

..and so many others that I truly enjoy- Herb Ellis, Mark Knopfler, Pat Metheny, CHarlie Hunter, Warren Haynes, Leo Kotke, Tommy Emanuelle, Steve Morse etc...

4-6 hours a day is pretty standard for most classical musicians. Of course, starting early is a huge advantage. When you get up to that level though, I've been told that hours practising technique goes down alot and the hours goes into artistic expression and such mostly. I'm on my first year in The Royal College of Music, and people here practise as much as they possibly can.

Doesn't get more plebian than this. I mean if you seriously can't hear the difference between Yngwie Plebsteen and real classical music, and I don't mean that you would necessarily like one more than the other, I feel sorry for you mate, you have a terrible ear, you are ignorant and unmusical.

Sorry mate.
>>
>>69819653
Best in thread.
>>
>>69824004
I explained my claim, but you're a bit on the fucking retarded end so I'll explain again, both the works linked in that post and Yngwie do muh arpeggios with little variation in technique and rhythm.

Now either you actually explain why I am wrong, or you continue with nothing but "lel pleb unmusical" which only means that you're talking out of your ass.

>>69823982
THIS actually sounds good. Maybe that other poster should've picked better compositions.
>>
>>69824004
a lot of solo instrument classical pieces are meant to be virtuosic for its own sake, much like metal. maybe it's not so different. coming from someone who'd rather listen to classical guitar
>>
>>69824062
You didn't explain or argue for your claim, you just stated it.
Your claim is that the music I linked is just arpeggios with little variation in technique and rhythm. It's an empty assertion without any evidence or reasoned arguments to back it up.

Now, until you have actually explained why, and not just stating it again in a different way, you will just get pity.

What is asserted gratuitously can be dismissed gratuitously.
>>
>>69819592
Uhm... he didn't.
>>

Sure, but the difference is that the classical pieces are generally well written in terms of form, harmony, counterpoint and melody.

For example, Yngwie's music lack counterpoint all together. It's almost exclusively 1 melodic voice over 1 bass voice, at best there is a second melodic voice in thirds. The harmony Yngwie uses is very intuitive and cliché. Rarely any interesting modulations at all.

The difference is really Apollonian (rational, orderly, complex) and Dionysian (irrational, chaotic and simple-minded); classical music (Apollonian) is meticulously composed by composers who know what they are doing and why they are doing it. Yngwies music could be written by any failed classical composer on toilet paper and be done before they've taken a shit. Metal music is Dionysian, even when they attempt achieving Apollonian expression. Now of course, nothing is purely the one or the other,.

>it's an empty assertion
>just stating it
So you choose to ignore the evidence then? Maybe you would have a point if we had no reference points to go from, but if we are this deep in the argument that means that we have done the prerequisite work (listening to both those youtube links and Yngwie's work) since those things are the reference points for being evidence. It's not hard to see that they are moving through chord shapes playing arpeggios all over a guitar with little variation in technique (sweeping through the strings using a pick or fingers) and rhythm (usually just a row of eights/sixteenth notes being played.)

You didn't post something like Asturias, not only a well known classical guitar composition, but one that has a large variety of technique and rhythm at display (certainly larger than anything in those links or Yngwie), and with quite a bit happening all at once. Not very straightforward. But you posted very straightforward examples of classical that are different from Yngwie.

This ain't that hard to get, you're just trying to pull the "intellectual" card to save yourself and waste our time. Your insecurity on a Mongoloid paper fetching forum is showing.

>>
>>69825437

They're my favourite band but even they admitted they just play what sounds good to them - which I agree with too - so I cant see how thats particularly technical.
>>
>>
>>69825130
Did you litsen to the whole works? If you did, you would know for example how this piece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfbxCsFS09U changes much. Essentially; high melody with block chords; tremolo melody with tenor and bass voice below; then a lower melody with more rhythmic high voiced chords above and so on and so forth.

Not only that, but the difference between the counterpoint vs Yngwies nonexistant counterpoint, the difference between the unique chord progressions in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoTTuwO0Tyc and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wlx0bGJrzk (not to mention the drastic mood changes in this one) vs Yngwies cliché Circle of Fifths chord progressions

The difference between melodic material vs Yngwies constant scale runs.

Those are the reference points, while you are narrowing down on "oh they both use arpeggios, ergo they are thesame". With that kind of logic, you could equate Daft Punk with Justin Bieber.

Asturias is the epitome of generic classical music. It is basically a pedal point and E harmonic minor festival (it doesn't even modulate one single time), which is immensly more similar to what Yngwie's doing. You obviously do not play classical guitar or know much about it if you assert Asturias has more variety of technique than the ones I posted. It is not based on evidence if you are not a classical guitarist yourself, since you obviously have no idea.

>This ain't that hard to get, you're just trying to pull the "intellectual" card to save yourself and waste our time. Your insecurity on a Mongoloid paper fetching forum is showing.

You can spend 6 hours a day every day in a 52 week year for about 5 years and you'll have played for 10000 hours, assuming you don't waste your time and have a specific schedule/teacher you'll basically be a master at your craft. At the same time you'll be able to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. You won't have a lot of time, the rest will be sleeping, eating, etc, but if you make your 8 hour a day job playing shows you'd have about 3600 hours a year keeping the 6 hour a day practice schedule with two days off.

Assuming you managed 8 hours of shows and 6 hours of practice time consistently, you'd have that magic number of 10000 hours in 3 years. Jaco Pastorius said in an interview that he played so many shows that was a lot of practice for him, and he was a master. Too bad he fucking died, cause now I can't really ask him what he did in detail.

Okay.
How about posting something the guitar is actually good at that separates it from other instruments, like polyphony.
Strings are generally shit at polyphony and the guitar's limitation are a benefit for composers(the best compositions are often written with strict limitations, whether it's the instrument, time or ability).
The general sound is more malleable on guitar than on piano due to having complete control over the strikes and vibrato.

What did he mean by this?

I actually cry everyday because I know I'll never be as good as Paganini

In my opinion hendrix is the best. Since hundreds of pages have been written as to why I won't go into it here. Another one I'll put forward is jerry garcia. That dude had such a good feel and was able to bust out solos for 20 minutes

>a musically illiterate showman is the best guitarist
He had interesting ideas, but his guitar playing itself was sloppy and if he had been sat down in front of sheet music and asked to play it, he probably would have just set the guitar on fire.
>>
>>69827440
he has such a calm nature and his voice is so tranquil. he treated me as a colleague each time i briefly talked with him. the last time i saw him was in 2009 in montreal. we talked theory and gear for a good while. i'd love to meet him again, but i don't know if he would remember me.

nice, this is the first holdsworth piece that i learned on guitar (sans the solo). his phrasing is absolutely unmatched by anyone.

idk I tried improvising over jazz progressions and literally every note fits, I fail to see what's hard about it

so where's your rendition of countdown by john coltrane
>>
>>69842596
Is he really unsatisfied with his performances some times? What astounds Mr the most about his playing is the smooth legato sound he managed to develop and his chord voicings. Ever since I listened to him, everything I think I about guitar has changed. Here's another masterpiece:

Oh, I forgot to mention Gary Husband and Chad Wackerman. Are those two even human? We all know Allan's not.

What are the chords?
>>
>>69843045
You have a great, smooth sound. What's your gear?
>>
>>69843120
It's about anticipating the chord changes and phrasing.
>>
We all know that le hidden guitarist in Green Day is the best. What are you even arguing about
>>
>>69843303
I was fucking around to be honest. It's just a mish-mash of random chord shapes and fast noodly chromatic licks. I could go back and analyze all those chords, but that would be a bunch of work
>>69843325
Ibanez RG Prestige, neck pickup with the tone knob rolled off
That was recorded DI with a little compression and reverb

Allan Holdsworth
>>
>>69843438
I never would've imagined that it's possible to get a tone of a jazz guitar from a metal Ibanez guitar. I have a Les Paul copy (Vintage V100) and I'm waiting for PAF 36th anniversary and a Bluesbucker pickup. I have a Fender Champ 30 DSP. How would I go about achieving a similar and a mellow tone?
>>
>>69843665
All you need for a good jazz tone is a really clean amp, a neck humbucker, and a tone knob. Compression and a little revern can help, but they're not necessary. "Metal" guitars are actually pretty versatile, it's just the aesthetics and the players that give them a bad rep
>>
>>69843821
Well, I have quite a bit of effects on my amp, except compression. Anything in particular I could do with my setup?

he's more fun desu
>>
>>69843855
Compression is just a little touch, it's not really needed. As I said, use the neck humbucker. And I'm not really sure how LP style knobs are configured, but one of them should act as a low pass filter (gives the tone less bite). Turn that one all the way down. Then use the clean channel on your amp and add just a little bit of reverb. It shouldn't be saturated, just enough to not make it so dry
>>
>>69844179
he's boring
>>
>>69844155
Literally the only thing about his style that could be compared to Holdsworth is the constant midi/keyboard backing. Totally different phrasing, tone, and playing otherwise
>>
>>
>>69844341
wrong, they're frequently grouped together. both play outside (holdsworth way more than gambale, but still), both play fusion
