There are definitely a couple of songs that could be considered black metal on there. But the whole album takes the cold and dark atmosphere that you get from black metal and does it differently, which is interesting. Phil's influences from the time seemed to have been all the 2nd wave artists as well as Xasthur, and their inspiration if seen on the album. One of the song even has Dunkelheit's lyrics.
