make friends with performers and then write pieces for them. or just write a piece for whatever combination and just straight up ask musicians if they will play them. being a conservatory, they're gonna be looking to play music all the time. It's scary as fuck putting your work in front of people and then asking them to play it, but generally people are looking to help out, even if they don't normally play weird new music or whatever. sending your stuff out to competitions and stuff is good too, but it's easier to just find musicians yourself a lot of the time. writing pieces for your instrument and other combinations is good, because you can always depend on yourself being able to play your own shit (hopefully).

Except that's a load of crap and there are, in fact, multiple good composers alive today.
>>
>>69826295
Those composers mostly use stupid gimmicks though
>>
>>69826995
Well who says things like the diatonic scale, functional harmony, counterpoint, sonata form, etc. aren't stupid gimmicks
>>
>>69827144
Yeah but there's a difference between those things and using randomly generated notes and extending what's at best a 4 minute song into a 5 hour piece

Yes, if you disagree then you are pretentious.

>almost everything itt made up of the same set of instruments
>no new sounds being discovered

For something called "art music" you would think it would be more forward thinking, but it can't even match up to whatever trash is on the radio today.
>>
>>69828186
H'es only OK.
>>
>>69828209
Composers can use any and all instruments they want, including electronics. The classic orchestral instruments are just the most popular because they sound the nicest

Here, have a reply.
>>
>tfw you can't even remember the names of all your favorite pieces.
>>
Will the study of composition make composing harder or easier?

I've just started studying music theory, but I'm already composing pretty long and complicated pieces. I feel that they're not coherent enough, but it's still extremely easy for me to find new musical ideas costantly.
Will learning the rules speed up this process?
>>
>>69828209 (you)
>>
>>69828209
Timbre is quite probably the shallowest musical attribute there is, even a monkey could find new sounds.

>>69829537
It really isn't, and a lot of interesting music (including classical) is based almost entirely on relationships between and evolution of timbrel elements.

>>69829589
Anon is literally saying that they don't, though.
>>
>>69829752

>Anon is literally saying that they don't, though.

That would be a ridicolous statement. Bartok's piano concertos don't sound like Brahms concertos, and his concertos don't sound like Beethoven's ones (wich are extremely different from the Mozart's ones), and they all use the same instruments.

It is.
>and a lot of interesting music (including classical) is based almost entirely on relationships between and evolution of timbrel elements.
So?
>>
>>69829870
Yeah, Anon recognizes that, but is also saying that the range of sounds that can be produced is limited by what the instruments are capable of. Of course, that's not really an issue any more when composers are now writing music for any number of different instruments, including non-classical and even electronic ones, and have been for the past century
>>
>>69829870
>they DON'T
>continues to talk like anon says they DO
between you and mr. "timbre is shallow" I am not sure which one is that much dumber, and possibly that much more pretentious considering it's a /classical/ thread.
>>
>>69829998
Most ideas in theory, why instruments are tuned a certain way, what instruments should be used for what type of work, etc. are all based on timbrel relationships though. Not shallow at all.

A factor for why they sound the nicest is because they have the most highly trained musicians. No new instruments are being invented then popularized since the Wagner tuba iirc.
>>
>>69830046
WHy instruments are tuned in a certain way is based on pitch and the relationship between them, and what instruments should be used for what type of work is more a matter of range than timbre.

I mean, I’ve never had sex with someone else, but it seems like whenever I meet with people outside of my house it’s a fucking formality. It’s like, great, I am with a person yet again, and we’re talking and I don’t really know them and they don’t really know me.
