Double albums also allow for a lot more flexibility and experimentation of the artist's ideas, allowing for a larger degree of sonic variation and a greater variety of ideas all to be present in one place, not to mention a greater presence to be taken away from the album itself. Some smaller albums can achieve this (and even be better for it) but the same can be said for double albums

Really, the criteria for being a double should just be album that is over an hour long, since double albums are two very different things when it started and in the modern age because a cd and a record hold very different amounts of music

Blonde on Blonde and Freak Out! were the first double albums in rock but today, they would be able to fit entirely on one cd and bands like Tool have made longer single albums than either of those two doubles...an LP double album is totally tolerable and in many cases, are the best albums of all time...a CD double album, or worse yet, a triple, is almost always trash (only exception that comes to mind right now that's not a compilation is The Raven)

Certainly my favorite of his, it and Blood on the Tracks are the only albums of his I feel have no weak tracks and both albums make each song better by playing them in sequence which is what a great album does in my opinion (which is why an album like Substance is not among my favorites even though it has many of my favorite songs of all time, they don't compliment each other)

Really? Those are easily among my least favorite on the album but to each their own.
Admittedly, I'm partial to their heavier material but they have softer moments that really hit it out of the park like Disarm and Thirty-Three. They had a versatility that many of their peers lacked.

It and Lily sum up the Smashing Pumpkins to me; pretty and sad. I do think that there are a lot of double albums that are too much, but a problem I've noticed is that nobody can ever seem to agree which tracks are the "filler" tracks most of the time. Everybody's taste varies.
