What are your top jazz releases from 2016?

What do you think of Scaruffi's list? How many of these do you think he actually listened to?
>>
does anyone actually listen to anything thats not 20th century hardbop
>>
I haven't heard many jazz albums this year, but I enjoyed:
Shabaka and the Ancestors - Wisdom of the Elders
The Olympians - s/t
Melt Yourself Down - Last Evenings on Earth (jazz-punk)
Kaytranada - 99.9% (though more jazz-influenced hip-hop than improvised/instrumental jazz)
The only one I'm lukewarm on is 99.9% because of the mediocre guest features, though the instrumental cuts are intricate and infectious. the other albums are amazing on my list are amazing. haven't heard anything from Scaruffi's list.

>haven't heard anything from Scaruffi's list.
sounds exactly right. should put BBNG on your list too.
>>
>>69771164
I don't think any of the albums on Scaruffi's list are hard bop
>>
>>69771338
I heard the BBNG album but it didn't make a huge impression on me. I really ought to revisit it, thanks for reminding me anon. have you heard anything good?
>>
Have not heard of or listened to a single one of those albums
>>
>>69771114
lol I thought the first one was Vijayjay at first glance
>>
Here's my list:

Still hoping to review 5-10 more before the end of the year. What am I missing?
>>
>>69771164
wat
>>
>>69771114
Nice to see Vandermark getting some love
that Brotzmann album didn't leave much of an impression on me, sadly
The Bynum album had a few fascinating moments (namely the sultry tones on the 2nd track) but was mostly meandering
>A fucking ECM release
Looks like a nice list overall. Still haven't listened to that Threadgill album, looking forward to it. "2 pianos!!"

Shift - Logan Richardson and Jim Rotondi - Dark Blue. Also curious to see what you thought of Fire Orchestra and the Thing/DKV trio collab.
>>
>>69772559
Already did Rotondi
>>
>>69772439
What's wrong with ECM?
>>
lusty negro attitudes
>>
If Esperanza Spalding counts as jazz fusion then definitely that.

otherwise its a tie between these two

although I just heard the new fire orchestra and it was excellent

lots of other stuff too but I didnt develop a list this year

The Iyer/Leo Smith album is realllll good. That Nels Cline album is pretty lame though.

Best jazz albums of 2016 were
Blood Quartet - Deep Red
Fire! - She Sleeps, She Sleeps
Black Bombain w/Peter Brotzmann (it's Brotzmann with a stoner metal band shut the fuck up)
Phallus Dei - Black Dawn
Anna Hogberg - Attack
JH3 - Fusion Machine
Saint Francis Duo - Peacemaker Assembly (more drony free improv, but shut the fuck up)
Sun Ra - In Some Far Place: Roma '77
Idris Ackamoor - We Be All Africans
Warped Dreamer - Lomahongva

>Black Bombain w/Peter Brotzmann (it's Brotzmann with a stoner metal band shut the fuck up)
and this is why other countries don't legalize acid
>>
What is The Epic of 2016 ??
>>
>>69774742
Anna Hogberg Attack

Only it doesn't suck and instead of it being a shitty rehash of Pharoah and Coltrane, it's tense and horrifying
>>
>>69774804
Have you never heard Ascension?
>>
>>69774864
I have heard it, yes.
>>
>>69774892
well parts of that are tense and horrifying in particular the pharoah parts
>>
>>69774902
Hardly in the manner done by Hogberg

Those are tense in a much more explosive way because that's how Pharoah do.

Hogberg is claustrophobic

John Zorn/Flaga - Book Of Angels 27, also maybe my AOTY.

I havent listened to much jazz this year, but some jazzy things ive liked are:
Meta Meta - MM3
Niechec - Nichec
BADBADNOTGOOD - IV
Fire! - She Sleeps, She Sleeps
Fire! Orchestra - Ritual (disappointed in this since Exit! and Enter were masterpieces)
Vijay Iyer & Wadada Leo Smith - A Cosmic Rhythm with Each Stroke
>>
>>69774922
ok its on next after logan richardson

kinda cool cover art
>>
>>69774936
>John Zorn/Flaga - Book Of Angels 27, also maybe my AOTY.
Did you hear any of his other stuff this year? Mockingbird was excellent.

So did you prefer She Sleeps to Ritual?
>>
>>69771799
>What am I missing
just good taste
>>
>>69772559
damn Locked Out of Heaven was so super spacey and dreamy it was awesome
>>
>>69774967
I haven't heard Mockingbird, I thought you meant The Painted Bird (jazz/prog rock stuff), which I thought was pretty good too if not a bit repetitive in the second half. Do you have a link to Mockingbird?

I did prefer She Sleeps to Ritual, but I think I just rated Ritual the same because Exit! is probably the most important album of my musical life over the last few years, and I have a soft spot for them. Part 4 of Ritual is really good though.
>>

>Do you have a link to Mockingbird?

>Exit! is probably the most important album of my musical life over the last few years

>>
>>69775252

>>
>>69775272

>>
>>69775272

>>
>>69774922
I'm only 6 minutes in but this is actually incredibly similar to Ascension
>>
>>69771114
The fact that he doesn't review or even rate jazz albums should be a red flag
