There are Logitech Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound speakers at Best Buy/Walmart for like $75 and they sound really good.

In that case, do you have any recommendations for cheap receivers?

I use Dayton B652's off a Lepai 2020A+ amp, never had an issues, sounds great. Should be between 50-60$

I thought the Z-506 were that much. Thats the 5.1
I'd get the 5.1, subs a bit shit though. Nothing wrong with the sound, just isn't very loud.
Thrift some vintage speakers

I want to get a good sound system and I feel like such a pleb. What is a receiver? what is a pre-amp? what are "real speakers"

A receiver is an amp with tuner. You can connect multiple sources to a receiver, to speakers and a headphone.
New receivers are very expensive but you can find older ones for cheap at eBay and thrift stores etc.

Lepai LP2020A+ Black Edition master race.

So I just need one of those things and some speakers?

You tell me.
You want anything more extensive than one left and one right channel, the Lepai isn't going to cut it.
I like it because it's cheap and fulfills my needs.

Also, the power supply it comes with is shitty. Be ready to dish out like $10 for a good one.
