If you're a false or a poseur, don't even bother listening to Manowar. Many poseurs and false have made the mistake of thinking they could simply just sit down and casually listen to Manowar, thinking they'll be fine, only to be crushed and disintegrate under the heaviness.
>>
>>69722156
The looks are great.

As for the music, it's a genre that's focused on singles rather than on albums.

So, expectedly, the albums are usually underwhelming because they're mostly filler, but the singles are consistently great.

Then there's bands like WASP who manage to make albums that are excellent from front to back.

Glam just needs a little bit more elitism.
>>

False, power metal branched off of speed metal in the early 80s, largely thanks to Riot transitioning from a speed metal band and into a power metal band, and bands like Manowar and Jag Panzer taking a much more louder, and speed driven approach to traditional metal while being more melodic than most speed metal. Power metal was a counterculture to thrash metal, which too branched off of speed metal, but unlike power metal, thrash brought much more extreme influences into the genre, from the early hardcore punk scene and whatnot, which a lot of the initial power metalfags didn't want so they tried to incorporate extremity into metal without the punk influence, which is why you see bands like Agent Steel and Manowar get into borderline harsh vocals plenty of times.

Of course I am serious, because I'm right.
Power metal branched off of speed metal in the early 80s as a counter-reaction to the emerging thrash metal scene that was emerging from the grittier side of speed metal at the same time. It's basic common knowledge. To understand power metal's origins you need to understand that late 70s speed metal was divided between bands that used sloppier, lower production, and mingled with the emerging punk scene, like Motorhead, and bands that were cleaner, higher production, and stayed much more within the constraints of the metal scene like Riot. Both groups of speed metal still essentially wanted to play faster traditional metal, but had very different approaches to it. In the early 80s, around the time thrash metal was starting to become a thing in the demo-trading sceneswith bands like Exodus and Hellhammer, you started to see the first power metal bands form such as Jag Panzer and Agent Steel, and even Riot strayed from speed metal and into power metal during the mid-80s, as a counter-reaction.

I guess I can't, since we seem to have different views of the development of speed metal and the origins of power metal (in fact, we probably have a different idea of what power metal is). It's like trying to point out inconsistencies within someone's philosophical system when in reality it's the whole system that's wrong.

kek, nice historical revisionism. Agent Steel spawned from the Bay Area too and were not thought of any differently from most early thrash bands of the time and period. Helloween explicitly took after Exodus and Metallica, even though they'd gradually increase the melodic elements and turn power metal into its own thing. Jag Panzer existed before and independently of thrash and had nothing to do with that period.

I'd say they took more from Judas Priest and the teutonic thrash scene
>>
>>69724521
Sure, definitely agreed on Priest (I mean it basically goes Priest/Scorpions --> Accept --> German speed/power), just pointing out that those bands took explicit influence from the Bay Area too. The Teutonic scene was wholly influenced by the Bay Area and wouldn't have been the same without it.
>>
>>69724494
And yet Agent Steel sounded absolutely nothing like the thrash metal bands they were around. Skeptic's Paradise is a power metal album.

>Jag Panzer existed before and independently of thrash and had nothing to do with that period.

Second wave/golden age: 87-93, the bands that came directly from the founders, either copies or pioneers of sub/micro-genres
Third wave/dark age: 94-00, bands that formed after thrash had officially "died"
Fourth wave/retro age: 01-present

You're overlapping too many bands that don't sound much alike. My division is much clearer. That and thrash after 93 only matters if it's technical/avantgarde/post (Coroner, early Meshuggah, Obliveon) or some form of crossover (Aura Noir, early Skyclad, Desultory, etc). And don't get me started on revivals.

Of course there's good retro thrash. It's an imitation of good old school thrash, it's bound to sound good. Doesn't mean it's worthwhile. Why would I bother listening to a band that sounds like Kreator's best works when I can listen to Kreator's best works?

Master of Puppets sounds the same as Spectrum of Death? Breaking the Silence sounds the same as Dimension Hatross? Think This sounds the same as Main Frame Collapse? By 1988 or so, there were too many different styles of thrash to easily compare them. I'd say 1985 is the last year you can get away with that. I think Puppets dropping in 1986 is when everyone tried coming up with different ideas/gimmicks and songwriting approached.

You're taking a very simple thing I said and drawing on the most opposite extremes to make a mockery of my argument. But whatever, if you like I'll go into further detail and even change the dates a bit, see if you can see where I'm coming from:

1982-84 was, though no one would word it that way back then, the birth of thrash. When it was a melting pot of early extreme metal from where more refined forms would emerge. Everything from Sodom's Witching Metal, to Hellhammer/Celtic Frost and Bathory, and of course the debuts of Slayer and Metallica. A faster, rawer, more evil take on NWOBHM. Hell, if you listen to Venom's Black Metal (the song) and Heaven's On Fire, you'll find 90% of what made thrash metal thrash metal. First wave.

1985-87 is when the style became self aware. It developed a persona, and separated itself from other burgeoning styles like speed metal and power metal. Death metal was in an embryonic stage, but it was there nevertheless (I'm in a bit of an unorthodox stance because I consider Sepultura's Bestial Devastation to be the first death metal release). Some bands gave emphasis to different elements of the genre, so that you get rather disparate albums (you gave some good examples), but they belong to the same current and clearly respond to the tendencies of the era. You can hardly mistake an album from 1986, 7 or 8 from one from 1984 or 1989. Second wave.

1989(yes, I guess it overlaps here)-1993: Death metal and black metal were now a reality, and, along with grindcore, they signaled somewhat of a zenith of the more extreme aspects of metal. Thrash was lagging behind. Its children had become more powerful than itself. So, as a last ditch measure, it focused more than ever on speed, clean production and technicality, bringing forth albums like Coma of Souls and Arise: Thrash that verges on the brutality of Death and the fury of second wave Black, without ever getting to match either styles' speed or extreme-ness. Third wave.
>>
>>69726519
After that debacle, thrash had no choice but to change radically, hence the golden age of technical and post-thrash (both, perhaps, championed by Coroner), or meld with other styles, which resulted in the black thrash attack of bands like Aura Noir or the deathened thrash (thrashened death?) of bands like Desultory. Then came revivals, as they're wont to, but I've never enjoyed them for the reasons stated earlier.

Goddamn why did I even type all of this? Bye, I'm gonna take a shower now.

I agree with the first two parts to an extent actually, not the third at all though. Putting aside "muh logical conclusion of metal", it had nothing to do with a competition with those other styles, especially not black metal. Further, Coma of Souls and Arise, "more than ever on speed, clean production and technicality"? Those are just bands trying to be Master of Puppets, more melodic and accessible. At the same time, you had Coroner, Believer, Confessor, etc doing all sorts boundary-pushing shit. There's no simple era that can describe thrash on a whole after 1986.

The album, monolithic ambient track included, changed with a resounding slap the face of black metal, and everything that came after it can be divided into three fields: "wants to be Transilvanian Hunger"; "wants to experiment" and "wants to be Filosofem".

It's a nigh-perfect album that has withstood the test of time and will always be amongst the style's greatest outputs.

I seriously doubt you have any coherent or consistent idea of what "meme album" is supposed to mean. Now stop listening to nigger music and take up your aryan keyboard, we have some dungeon synth to make.

i do.
So did the whole of the Dungeon Synth genre, seeing as a lot of artists cite Burzum as a key major influence on the genre.

>"Boop boop boop... boop... boopboop..." for 25 minutes
>good

>>69727122

I actually don't mind it, but even as a single track I think it goes on about 2 or 3 minutes too long than what it justifies. Simply having it twice is just pure laziness. If you actually have any knowledge about how quickly varg shat out his albums in the studio you'll realize that his work was not flawless musical genius from start to finish and would have greatly benefited from more time and refinement.

>>69727093

I'm not contesting that it was influential and a new idea and approach of what a BM album could be, I'm contesting that it's a high quality album from start to finish. It absolute is not, not even close. It's a generous 5/10 for me in execution (I give it that since Varg FINALLY put down some vocals that weren't embarrassing), 8.5/10 in concept.

> It absolute is not
Granted. Rundtgåing could stand to be 10 min. shorter, while remaining its structure (inb4 "it has no structure"-- it does. It's got a perfectly good developement. The only problem is that the first part repeats itself a few too many times, but even then it's perfectly good)
>not even close.
This is the point I'm trying to address. You're simply wrong. The album is, as I said, near perfect, and its defects are perfctly surmountable granted you don't have such a level of impatience and stubbornness that you could be working at the stock market. And no, I'm not saying you have to "force" yourself to like it. I'm saying that the main characteristics which make the album so effective and amazing are the same ones that do away with the perception of time.
>It's a generous 5/10 for me
Oh thank you so much!!! I'm sure Varg would be honoured!!

>>69727424

I'm just highly sensitive to things going on too long and excessive repetition. Put it this way, if he had cut out 10 minutes from the ambient track like you said, only had one decrepitude track, and had a fourth track like the first three (at the end I think, to send the album off on a high note) I'd probably really like the album.

As it stands, though, it's just far too flawed for me to enjoy all the way through, it's an album that screams "TURN ME OFF" about two thirds through. If not wanting to put up with a full 20 minutes of shit at the end of an album that shouldn't be there makes me impatient, fine, I'm impatient. I know I'd rather spend that 20 minutes of my musical time listening to something else rather than unnecessarily long winded black metal ramblings.

So let me get this straight: You can't handle repetition because there's clearly something wrong with you, so this album is anything less than amazing?

Defectuous AND entitled? WHODATHUNKIT!
>>
>>69727691

I can handle repetition, but I think that (surely) everybody has a threshold. Having the same track twice, and an inherently repetitive track that is 25 minutes is a good example of where I draw the line. So, yes, that makes it much less than amazing, at least for what I want from an album. I don't begrudge anyone loving it.

>defectuous and entitled

lol, fuck off kid. You don't have to sling insults because an anon dislikes your precious album.
>>
>>69727691
Repetition sucks. I hate ostinatos.
>>
>>69727823
>You don't have to sling insults because an anon dislikes your precious album.
Are you new to /mu/ or something? And the inclusion of the second, instrumental, more ambient version of Decrepitude is one of the best things about the album.
