did Schoenberg take Cage seriously?
>>
>>69720987

>In an interview with Dutch composer, pianist and conductor Reinbert de Leeuw, Reinbert told he watched a biography of Cage. He told that Schoenberg said: "Cage knows nothing of harmony. Absolutely nothing. He is an inventor, in heart and soul a musical inventor." Schoenberg himself is very much about harmony.

Hindemith's generally easy postings were not to last however, and after a transfer to Flanders in May he experienced the Front for the first time. He wrote in his diary:

>Towards evening eight bombs landed near the town. One hit the ammunition convoy that was camping 10 minutes away from us...A horrible sight. Blood, bodies full of holes, brain, a torn-off horse's head, splintered bones. Dreadful! How mean and indifferent one becomes. I don't think I could have eaten or worked in peace after seeing such a sight – and now one sits at home again, writing, chatting, in a good mood – not thinking about how soon the bell could also toll for us - are we going to withdraw unharmed?

So trying to learn relative pitch now. Is there a better way of getting a feel for the intervals other than associating them with pieces of music you already know? This feels like a crutch and it seems like it would be distracting when you need to identify them in a totally different context
>>
>>69732514

I don't know if there are other methods, but the one you've described will work in the long run. You are still in the stage in wich you have to identify the pitch, but somewhere in your future it will be basically automatic. You won't need to recognize that interval you're struggling with because at that point you will have done that thousands of times.

Schmitt: Ombres (like gaspard), Reves (like the poem of ecstacy), Soirs for orchestra (like tombeau de couperin), Symphonie Concertante (masterpiece), Mirages, La Tragedie de Salome (the ending inspired stravinsky for rite of spring), Psalm 47, Quintet, 2nd symphony, Habeyssee, Crepuscules, violin sonata...

He's like a mix of Ravel, Wagner and Scriabin and has so many amazing pieces in his output

Ferroud: Foules (french rite of spring), Types, Symphony in A

I don't really "get" Bach, except for the occasional work (Toccata and Fugue, Air, Jesu, Badinerie...)
Now Vivaldi on the other hand, I can listen to anything he's made, for any instrument, all the time. I love that shit.
I feel there's some fundamental difference between the way they compose. I know Bach does this thing where he intertwines two melodies or something, but I can't really understand it when I listen.

What is up with Ferneyhough?

Is there something to understand in his music or is he just doing random, arbitrary useless shit?
>>
So is this just western classical music or can we also discuss "classical" music from other countries?
>>
>>69753816
its bad enough we can discuss idiots like Cage. I think we'd have to at least limit discussion to academic music.
>>
>>69753829
But other countries also teach their distinctive "classical" musics as well, i don't want to derail the thread from what it originally was though, just pointing out that someone can come in and just say "other countries have classical music traditions so now i can post about Hindustani classical music"
>>
>>69753235
Ferneyhough is interested in the score as an area of struggle for the performer. He generates his rhythms with computer programs, then assigns pitch and extended techniques etc.
He also has very interesting premises for his works. Read the info in this video for example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_1vfjn2lyk

He's writing purely for himself, and to challenge performers. Most of us will never "understand" the music, but we can appreciate it none the less. Try listening to the small details - tiny micro melodies nestled in the texture. In this way each piece is full of tiny details, of which you discover different elements with each listen. Its like a fractal; you can zoom in on different areas and find totally different details each time, but with an overall consistency.

Or you can say "its random useless shit" and move on. Most people would do this, Ferneyhough is really a composer for top level performers, or for contemporary composers. The common person isn't his intended audience.
