It's like they're allergic to trying to write something good. Every riff they write needs to be as cluttered and frantic as can be with no regard to tone or direction.
Off the bat this is just another death metal album in name only, it has the growls, it has the distortion, and it has the hyper fast drumming, but everything is assembled so mechanically together, topped off with such digital cleanness and shiny pristine, like it wants to seem heavy but is so ashamed to be a part of the scene. There's no passion here, it's like some snobby music professors tried their hands at making "intelligent" death metal, they wrote a checklist for what they thought would be necessary to count as death metal and then filled it with needless complexity for that "intelligent" aspect. Riffs vary between being fast and intricate slurries of notes to being basic, but still fast, death metal chugs you've heard a million times over, everything wrapped up in a brick walled to fuck production where bass is only audible when the band wants to remind you that they do indeed have a bassist. Songs are long, aimless, and twist and turn without any bit of focus. Riff (and I use that term quite loosely here) leading into riff leading into solo leading into riff comprises the song writing ideas here, with some occasional orchestral samples thrown in to make this album seem grander than it is. It's a nauseating and headache inducing experience, while not as annoying as Brain Drill or Monumental Torment, it's equally as flashy and unnecessary. Completely irredeemable garbage with not one decent moment in its duration.

The opening riff is precisely not massive, it's pretty gnarly but it feels like something that should be in the middle of a more bombastic song in between two really cool passages.

As a matter of fact I think Thorns' only flaw is that it has a blunt opening.

There's some IBM that's like that out there, and it's commonly regarded as some of the worst in the genre.

Industrial music isn't stuck in the 70s, it's a very wide musical tradition, and expectedly, IBM is also very eclectic.

And just making blackened noise is uninventive, lazy, and fairly boring to listen to.
In other words: stupid.

However, finding ways to integrate not only industrial percussions, but also ambient synths, martial drumming, and digital effects into an already pretty experimental BM riffing style (which is what Thorns do) IS inventive, arduous, entertaining to listen to, and interesting.

Seems to me like you're just not familiar with industrial and just bought into the "anything that doesn't sound like Throbbing Gristle isn't industrial" meme from /noise/.

The band has some stuff to work out, but they have potential in my opinion, I'm pretty sure it's just bass (or maybe just a ridiculously down-tuned guitar), drums and a guy on the synths.

I don't want necessarily want eclectic and inventive, I just want a band that succesfully blends death industrial or PE and pummeling black metal in a way that doesn't sound like they just append synth interludes randomly.

I also don't find noise black metal or raw black metal boring. Perhaps I'm just not a fan of industrial metal.

Because death industrial is one of the more boring industrial subgenres. It's just thick layers of distortion and sometimes a guy screaming in the background, pretty much a parody of what plebs say when they describe black metal

And yes, Thorns is mostly Snorre's project, but it's certainly not some obscure bumfuck one-man-band bedroom project without ambition.

As a matter of fact only a retard would dismiss Thorns as merely "having potential", since it's blatantly clear that the self-titled album is already a great achievement in itself and a monument of IBM in general.

And that's not something that's left to your appreciation, it's common knowledge.

Of course I don't expect a noisefag to understand that.
