How compatible are MIDI keyboards (or digital keyboards) with music production programs? If I buy a keyboard that is marketed as 'Ableton keyboard', will it work with other programs too?
>>
So here's my problem: i would like to get into synths but i have a more pianist formation and i hate every non-weighted key. Also i can't stand the 20ms of latency that i get connecting my digital piano with a midi-interface to my pc. Is there some device that i can connect to my digital piano that would let me play it as a synth?

I have read about modular synths but i haven't really understood how they work, especially how they interface with controllers, plus they seem very complicated. I would like something that would work almost how of the box, something that i can approach with the turn-this-knob-see-what-it-does method.
I would use it mainly for live performances.
>>
>>69697906
In my (limited) experience i have never had any compatibility issue with my midi controllers using fl/ableton/other minor sofrwares
>>
>>69695905
Distortion/waveshaper and put an eq in front of that so you can choose which frequencies to distort the most. But remember garbage in -> garbage out, you should def try to get a very full tone out of your synth in the first place with a sub osc/octave doubling etc.
>>
>>69698108
>Is there some device that i can connect to my digital piano that would let me play it as a synth?
Yea it's called a synthesizer lol. Piano > midi cable > polyphonic synth, will probably not give you much latency.
>>
>>69698108
Also don't get modular synths if u want to use it as a piano, since they are almost always monophonic.
May I suggest a Waldorf Blofeld, it's got plenty of nice keys/synth presets and you can adjust simple parameters like filters and oscillator shape without much hassle. To go deeper into the synthesis there is some menu diving though.
A Nord Rack might also be suitable for you but I've never had one personally.
>>
Should I keep going and arrange this shit or nah?

I have a grand to spend on a synth

I can't decide what to get

I have a MS20 (too limited, not that great sounding until its through some effects, I'm not creative enough to get into exploiting wacky sounds) and Blofeld (extremely boring patches, sounds amazing with building your own patches, but that requires tedious menu diving and annoying programming) that I want to ditch

What should I look at?

Why do people hate on minilogues?
Should I start getting into modular?

I'm looking at:

Elektron A4, Modor, 0-coast, minilogue, monologue, mophox4

really love elektron gear, dunno how the A4 sounds

As long as it has a midi input, yeah it will work. Of course working through the computer is more convenient if you actually want to record midi, quantize it, and then record the sound from the midi data, that's why most producers will probably do it that way.

I haven't done any minute eq'ing.

Anything else?
Musically it sounds mostly there, right?
In the last measure of each progression there is a Dmin chord that I throw some F#s into the melodies at times to create some suspense dissonance. My ears didn't hear anything too appalling there, so I left it.

And by lead synth you are referring to the one at 0:50, right? I technically have more than one lead, and the synth that plays them changes throughout the song.
>>
>>69709435
yeah compositionally it's fine, I was just critiquing the mix. and yeah I was talking about that synth at :50
>>
>>69707320
portamento / slide. It's a setting you can find on many instruments, not a generic MIDI parameter like pitch bend.

When portamento is on, a new note doesn't change the pitch immediately, but starts to "slide" the pitch towards the new note. So there are degrees of portamento, the higher levels slide the pitch quicker. You can automate the amount of portamento to turn it on/off or tune it to how you want it in your specific sequence.
>>
>>69708839

I know this faux-80s arpeggiated bass shit is lame, but I thought it would be a good exercise for practicing chords. Any thoughts overall?

Anyone using Elektron product? Damn the new Overbridge is a bitch
>>
What do you do when you want to keep producing and come up with something you're proud of but you're burnt out of ideas?
>>

Try an entirely different genre, or force yourself to take a break for a week or two and just consume a bunch of new music. It's very easy to get burnt out if you only focus on your own music because you get in a rut of only hearing your own ideas.

decided to fuck around with some samples

In FL Studio it's called ghost notes, and you can turn on "editable ghosts".
Also Rosegarden (midi sequencer for linux) supports this very nicely.
>>
>>69716372
There's also a version of Rosegarden for windows, it seems

Does anybody here come up with full songs/melodies/harmonies?

I can get a few nice motifs on a daily basis, but after that I don't have much inspo. Often, I just drop them, or I have to work really hard to make something out of them.
>>
>>69716981
If you have a motif you can lay chords under it pretty easily no?
>>
Can anyone recommend a decent and reasonably priced collection of VST plug ins (effects and tools rather than instruments)?

Also what is the best reasonably priced mastering software?
>>
>>69695905
If you're after hardware an MS20 mini can get noisy and dirty as fuck, it's monophonic though obviously. Dial the HPF to around 9 o'clock and crank the res for nice low end. Feed the headphone out back in to the audio in and get some sweet feedback. Add some decent distortion and you're away.
>>
>>69698956
Look into synth modules. They're fairly compact. Something like an Access Virus, Nord Lead or Prophet 08. If your digital piano has a MIDI out you'll be fine.
>>
>>69717346
Look at Melda's stuff, they have some nice freebies too.

Please respond

>>69711349
you can do that in FL Studio.

>>69713816
I think you need to bring the drums up a bit more and sidechain the piano slightly. It doesn't feel like there's a lot going on and it sounds like you;re relatively new to producing. Also it clips at some parts.

>>69713889
OHHHHH YEAH THIS ISN'T LAME DUD THESE CHORDS ARE FUCKIN MILKY AND FUCKIN NICE AND ANALOG SOUNDING, although I think the drums are barely cutting through, chords are way too loud and probably need sidechain.

>>69714732
wait, if you've come up with something you're proud of how are you out of ideas?

>>69715543
pretty great!

>>69716981
Yeah, I've listened to so much music I always get inspired and when inspo hits I always write it down or record it. I have like 500 project ideas and 10k ideas on notepads. I'm so autistic tho with this shit I'll get out of the shower dripping water if I have to write down an idea fast and when I'm out I'm always fuckin writing shit down on my phone.

>>69717346
Just get all of the FL Studio plugins, the juice pack and everything else they have you won't be disappointed.

>>69717606
drums aren't cutting through at all

>>69717619
it's pretty random desu and the kick is distorting heavily.
>>
>>69704170
This shit was hot
>>
>>69709227
Would I be better off with one of these or an akai mpc500?

I want something I can create sequences in
>>
>>69718114
The MPC would be better for sequences. The SP404 is a bit basic in that area.
>>
>>69718213
So if I have a live set can I save sequences and play them back?
>>
>>69704170
add some sort of trippy effect to the hihats (phaser, etc.) and mix them down.
>>
>>69718528
>>69704170
just adding, i really liked the track.

lmao, entertaining, I'll tell you that. I like when you hit those out of range high notes too.

>>69719176
OH SHIT NIGGA THIS IS LIT

At 0:32 when he says "and then you look down" - both his tone of voice and the bass going a step down - they works so well.

I'm thinking of getting Cubase Elements as a means of producing basic demos for my band as it's cheap and I don't need hundreds of tracks and virtual instruments. Good idea or bad?
>>
>>69719443
it will be fine for that
>>
It's so easy to fall back in depression while producing. Jeez... That feeling that nobody cares. Hurts so bad.
>>
>>69719759
get gud and people will care.
>>
>>69719759

i think we all know that feel. you pour hundreds of hours into something, and it's hard not to take it personally if people don't like it. its even worse if the reaction is 'meh'
>>
>>69719759
be like black dudes who make like 10-20 youtube/SC accounts just to like and share their own music.

im sure youll get noticed.
>>
>>69719874
This basically, yeah.
>>
I tried to get the feeling of this bass >>69719176

Fug, how can I clean my ears and hear better what is happening with the sound? I think I'm pretty bad at sound design. How is this?
