Its funny because the hipster aesthetic of beards and tats is now horribly uncool and all tatfafs are forever associated with a brief normie fad now
>>
>>69680406
how does it suck? NME is literally Smash Hits now

because the wire is pretentious shit for racist, misogynistic posers who think they're so cool for ignoring mainstream music

i'd like to see some evidence for these three claims, but you probably will just shout something about elitism and storm out of the thread

Seriously. Read >>69669900

Why are The Wire readers so incensed over artists like Solange and Rihanna and Young Thug and Future being praised? Because they're mainstream? Come on now. I think there's more to it than that...
>>
>>69680577
yeah i have no idea, the wire have always flirted with pop

you can't really blame the readers for the mag, especially the readers who make threads on /mu/
they are probably not even readers, they probably just saw the chart posted here
>>
>>69680594
>the wire have always flirted with pop
only to a very limited extent.
http://www.thewire.co.uk/issues/charts/top-50_albums-of-the-year-2012
>>
>>69680614
No, you just think you're too good for mainstream pop music and are desperately trying to have your taste validated.

Wire is a pop music magazine through and through. Deal with it.
>>
>>69680594
>they are probably not even readers, they probably just saw the chart posted here
this is exactly the case. until their chart was mentioned i NEVER saw any mention of it.

it's hilarious how everyone here feels threatened by a publication that actually reviews and writes insightfully about music beyond the scope of pitchfork and fantano

then when readers actually questioned the inclusion of those kinds of albums the backlash is "y-you're just elitist and probably RACIST too!"
>>
>>69680666
i've been subscribed for three years

what i meant was the wire is never mentioned on /mu/

>The Wire shilling started like two days ago out of nowhere

Really makes me think. Surely this isn't some kind of campaign to increase readership. Everyone just suddenly became interested in a magazine that's been around for decades. Sure.
>>
>>69680680
>>69680676
I've never even heard of this shit before in my life. There's some hardcore shilling going on here. L
>>
>>69680680
/mu/ has absolutely had a revolving-door userbase turnover considering how increasingly puerile and memespouting it's become over the past couple of years, i'm not surprised that it's never, ever been discussed until the year-end chart was posted here

see >>69680706 for case in point
>>
>>69680748
The only time I ever see it is in Dean Blunt memespam threads.
>>
>>69680774
this is exactly what i mean

/mu/ is 90% teenagers now, their only entry into things is either memes or OMG CHARTS AND LISTS because their exposure to music revolves around being spoonfed by tastemakers

hence it's no surprise that suddenly the wire is being mentioned after a.) a stupid meme and b.) a year-end list
>>
>>69680801
Not to mention that Top 40 pop and rap are the most dominant genres among neo-/mu/ posters, and the idea that a music publication can exist outside of that realm is completely foreign and slightly intimidating to them.
>>
>>69680838
precisely

and now people like OP are trying to posture using it after just finding out it exists. /mu/ is cute
>>
>>69680381
The Quietus is the only one I visit with any regularity, and I don't even particularly like that

I find it better to just explore genres and actually talk to people with similar tastes instead of reading some random person's thoughts (who generally have to weigh up their choice of content against ad revenue). There's a reason these sites all review the same albums
>>
>>69680889
>There's a reason these sites all review the same albums
Yes, because The Wire is LITERALLY in the same league as Pitchfork and Rolling Stone in their unabashed coverage of flavor of the month "indie", Top 40 pop, and rap. They LITERALLY review nothing else.
>>
>>69680929
What's wrong with you?
>>
>>69680801
you can argue that but the only reason to read Wire is as some kind of music/content aggregator, if you've ever read any of the content they put out it reads like every other music pub, so its pretty bland 2bh

If you have like spotify/last.fm and you regularly engage in discussions of music online then you're not missing out on much

So i see where you're coming from but besides Wire's "cool" factor its got nothing else to ignite anyone's attention
besides leveraging the genius of James Ferraro for its own gain that is
>>
>>69680929
chill faggot
>>
>>69681000
it's useful for finding out about all the month's noise releases, or all the month's field recordings or whatever
but i'm with you in that the actual writing can be a bit strained sometimes

the only reason i ever read it is to find out what everyone's been up to
some of these scenes are quite small so it serves a strange kind of social function for some people

i posted the list this year.

>>
>>69680456
>because the wire is pretentious shit for racist, misogynistic posers who think they're so cool for ignoring mainstream music
bad meme ; )
>>
>>69681997
this. The Wire was the list in the OP along with like 50 other music magazines' AOTY lists in the thread.

What happened was that it actually gave a chance for regular readers of The Wire to discuss their disatisfaction with the some of the choices on the list, while certain anons who are completely unfamilar or only superficially aware of the magazine berated the readers over their wariness for poptimism and for the fact that the mag actually covers music beyond the usual p4k realm of releases.

Old /mu/ vs. neo-/mu/ essentially.
>>
The only people who think that The Wire is some arbiter of "intelligent and advance taste" are the people who have never read The Wire, or people who are only getting into the sort of music which The Wire covers and therefore still don't know that much about it.

A buddy of mine has a subscription to the magazine and whenever I borrow an issue from him or flip through it at his place I ended up baffled by how poor and cookie-cutter and often downright uninformed the majority of their music writing and coverage is.

Alight, i'm seeing about 3-4 "The Wire" threads on /mu/ right now. Is this some new viral marketing campaign or something? I like the magazine but liking it less everytime I see it spammed here.
>>
>>69684328

this
>>
>>69680577
>Because they're mainstream?
no it's because they sucks and they're praised just for their skin tone
>>
>>69684408
It's because The Wire's year end list was in the OP of a thread along with like 50 other music magazines' AOTY lists in the thread.

What happened was that it actually gave a chance for regular readers of The Wire to discuss their disatisfaction with the some of the unusually convential choices on the list, while certain anons who are completely unfamilar or only superficially aware of the magazine berated those anons over their wariness for poptimism and for the fact that the mag actually covers music beyond the usual p4k realm of releases.

And then somewhere along the line it turned into a meme.

Old /mu/ vs. neo-/mu/ essentially.
>>

>>
>>69688383
>Shill

>>
>>69680577
because now literally every music publication covers the same shit. this doesn't have anything to do with hating mainstream music but there should be a special-interest "safe space", so to speak, where the same 30 albums from 3 genres overshadow everything
>>
>>69688439
>but there should be a special-interest "safe space"
Read: there should be a antiquated white male music safe space because I dislike all this progressive rap and RnB
>>
>>69688485
but the wire cover lots of hip hop
and it's hip hop that doesn't get covered by p4k etc

they had a cover with sensational once
who the fuck would give him a cover but them
>>
>>69689111
i'm talking about ACTUAL forward thinking AMERICAN hip-hop like lil yachty and rae sremmurd that they only "cover" at arm's lengths and their fans always bitch about it being "not real music"
>>
>>69689143
lmao you don't even know who sensational is
>>
>>69688485
yes, but unironically
>>
>>69689205
so you admit to being racist?
