why do these supposedly alternative publications fill their list with mainstream stuff?
in that regards, the wire list surprises me a little.
>>
>>69642073
the wire's list has become increasingly 'mainstream' the last few years - i suspect it's a consequence of a number of their writers being shared with other publications. no one can afford full time staff wages so you see a lot of writers hopping b/w publications - homogenizes these lists and music critique in general.

Least cringey year end list I've encountered so far. Nice to see Iggy get some love finally. Motherfuckers slept on that one. Also good to see Leonard Cohen at #5

i can't be bothered text-ifying their song list. if you can be asked, you're welcome to post it.

if someone from there is here, when's your album list out?
>>

That Lorenzio Senni was an EP?
I really enjoy it though
>>
Was honestly expecting The Wire's list to be just as black as all the others. Their deference to legacy acts continues to surprise me.

Not terrible. Just remove ATCQ and then I'd at least generally agree with the top 4. After that though they completely lose it and I closed the tab at 10

is the Frank Ocean album worth giving a listen to? i never understood the appeal. Forrest Gump was one of the worst tracks i heard a few years back and it boggled my mind it and he were hyped so much.

also, Skeleton Tree is an okay album, but really only on lists in light of the tragedy. Blackstar, however, has also been elevated b/c of tragedy but it's still a, ahem, stellar album. Leonard Cohen's, too, but he's rarely had mass appeal apart from Hallellujah covers.

what's the point of posting your personal list if it looks the same as your employer's one, except with a few variations in terms of placement?

fuck, seeing that shit confirms that basically all american mainstream music journalism is praising the same few albums over and over again. these people don't listen to things from other countries. these people don't look for releases that may get lost in the underground unless they uncover it.

how sad

The Wire. Highly recommend subscribing to them. Really interesting reviews and features/interviews in every article. Even the ads have cool labels/artists. Not to mention dope ass compilation albums.

I will admit though that they've been trending a bit towards mainstream pop/hip-hop/RnB in recent years, but they're still a way above any of their nearest contemporaries (ie. Resident Advisor, The Quietus) and shit all over the likes of p4k.

Sometimes I think the Quietus is too "contrarian" to their own detriment. Like, their AOTY for 2016 is a surprising, unconventional choice, but it's also not very good. The same could be said for many of their selections - they lean too much on mediocre bandcamp releases nowadays. For me, The Wire is much more measured in that regard. Sure, they'll highlight more obscure releases, but they don't do so just on the basis of being obscure.
>>
>>69644681
>>69644729
>>69644746

i wish Wire had a dedicated Pop staff writer
>>
>>69654864
>the wire has always covered these to a sizeable degree
Well not quite, because they were strictly jazz for the first 10 years of their existence.
>>
>>69654876
>i wish Wire had a dedicated Pop staff writer
Just look at their year end list. Fair amount of quality mainstream pop in that.

To be fair, they've always taken a somewhat opposed stance to general mainstream music/pop unless it proves itself to be really worth listening to. They're supposed to cover the underground/avant-garde.
>>
>>69654910
>Fair amount of quality mainstream pop in that.
If you mean like 5 picks, maybe.
>>
>>69654910
I'm aware of what they've always represented, it'd just be nice to have smart reviews about pop coming from somebody other than xgau. and i mean, they didn't include Anti or Coloring Book, which were high marks in 2016 pop
>>
>>69654953
Well yeah, they are at the end of the day a magazine dedicated to experimental and avant garde music. 5 picks of the best mainstream pop music is pretty fair.
>>
Can somebody explain Babyfather to me. It has made quite a few of these lists and I still don't get it. I am only vaguely familiar with Dean Blunt.
>>
>>69654977
true. i just mean that it'd be nice to see one staff member making a year end pop list like they do with every other genre.
>>
>>69654973
>it'd just be nice to have smart reviews about pop coming from somebody other than xgau
That would be nice, but they run the risk of corrupting what they stand for. It's easy to fall into the habit of "poptimism" and focusing heavily on mainstream artists b/c of page clicks and pulling in more subscribers.
>>
>>69654986
Bongs really like being told that they're British.
>>
>>69654998
Ok, yeah, I see what you mean now. If you limit it to just a year end list, that's more than fair.
>>
>>69654986
It's mostly contextual imo. Musically it's rather mediocre but it's extremely topical given Brexit, the rise of Trump, police states, etc.
>>
>>69655008
good point. still, xgau is 76 years old, and p4k and all the other giants just always get pop wrong, every single year. who'll be the replacement?
>>
>>69655039
>and p4k and all the other giants just always get pop wrong
How do they get it wrong?
>>
>>69654506

>>
>>69655027
Especially when it's a fucking Craig David sample at the UK garage awards. I mean, how british can you get?
>>
>>69655030
still, they've always seemed a little too contrarian for me. not including Mutant in last year's list? placing Still Brazy #1 in hip hop this year, actually implying that heaping piece of elephant shit is better than the tribe record?
>>
>>69655039
Probably not the wire. The subscriber base is more into classical, jazz, avant-garde electronic and rock than anything. They aren't going to pay $80 a year to read Rihanna reviews.
>>
>>69655067
Mutant was a real snub, desu, but their hip-hop list I couldn't really care less about. Not really their forte.
>>
>>69654953
>If you mean like 5 picks, maybe
the amount isn't the only thing but also the placement, and they gave number one to that
>>
>>69655044
well, there's NME, Spin, Stereogum, P4k who have been making well thought out concessions to pop since 2009-2010 imo, but they constantly either overrate or underrate big budget records. take Maya or Eat Pray Thug for example, the panning they received from these publications were very nearsighted.
>>
>>69655106
i guess because the writers are brits, hip hop really will never be their forte.
>>
>>69655067
yeah, that hip hop list is really weak. the person in charge of it doesn't seem to make the same effort of uncovering and exploring as his peers
>>
>>69655120
yeah but look at the rest of the top ten. apart from nick cave the rest is pretty non-mainstream.
>>
>>69655122
big budget and/or pop*
>>
I can't even come up with 10 albums i even enjoyed this year....let alone rank them on a list.
>>
>>69655106
>>69655067
Mutant was pretty weak, honestly. Didn't really do too much new in terms of composition or sound design. It was also pretty bloated.
>>
>>69655168
what the fuck have you been doing all year?
>>
>>69655168
Listen to more music.
>>
>>69641416
kinda dissapointing to see blackstar at the top desu. wire is known for paying attention to experimental, underground and more risk-taking music so to see them falling for such an obvious and safe choice is a bit of a let down
>>
>>69655177
agree to disagree. i think it was basically an improvement on everything off of Xen. the sound design was more visceral and violent, the found sounds like those chants in Umbilical, the ghastly melancholy and inertia in Soichiro... i could go on. It's really such an intense album and definitely Arca's best imo.
>>
>>69655212
this. It's a bit worrisome for the future. Hopefully it's just an anomaly and not a shift towards a greater focus on the exact same shit every other music mag/site talks about.
>>
>>69655244
I just don't think Arca works well in the album format - both Xen and Mutant were disappointments. Mutant had a few standouts, but there were also far too many middling tracks.
>>
>>69655212
Yeah but it wasn't a very good year for that type of music, and Blackstar was better then the other stuff on the list, even if it is overrated.
>>

>>
>>69655395
i just find it really weird how they give so much attention on a daily basis to free improv stuff but it never makes the top of their lists. do they not include that there?
>>
>>69655471
Seriously this. They cover so much interesting shit throughout the year.
>>
who else thought Blackstar sucked?
>>
>>69655471
It's probably because of the poll format for choosing the AOTY list. Sure, there are many independent writers who care for it, but the EoY list comes down to a more popular vote - and free improv is still fairly polarizing. One writer's opinion is just on writer's opinion (see: Joanna Newsom's Ys, Julia Holter's HYIMW, and Kanye's TLOP getting panned in the og. reviews but scoring highly on the AOTY lists).
>>
>>69655532
ah, i see. that explains a lot. i haven't followed free improv that closely this year but i've heard some good stuff from some of the usual people (o'rourke, ambrchi, gustafsson, etc) and it really confuses me why that doesn't make the cut when they usually cover that sort of thing.

but what you say makes a lot of sense; i guess stuff like blackstar works as a common ground for most of the voters (it is way more probable a lot of people have heard that than, i dunno, Melt) and eventually gets a bigger focus on the yearly list.
>>
will tinymixtapes publish a list or will they keep masturbating about their pseudo-intellectual shit?
>>
>>69655531
I did but I would never admit that.
>>
>>69641416

no Danny Brown?
>>
>>69655531
kinda. it's a really safe-sounding album and what is frustrating is that it somewhat toys with the idea of not being that. scott walker got the old dude reinventing himself thing better, at least he goes places
>>
>>69642650
The Quietus is also good.
>>
>>69655613
yeah, exactly. free improv is still fairly niche and it's also relatively "old guard" if you know what i mean (so is bowie, obviously, but he died which adds extra cultural/ emotional significance) so i can see how they don't feel the need to elevate some of those artists (plus it might perpetuate certain stereotypes about what their "ideal artists" are - the wire is often characterized as pretentious or w/e). still, i agree that the genre was noticeably overlooked.

honestly i feel syro was a stranger choice for aoty than blackstar, esp because imo 2014 was pretty strong for experimental music and syro was just so mediocre....

>>69655808
ah, this is really helpful, thanks. yeah, i can see how it works like this. yeah, Blackstar is the most repeated one for sure, so it makes sense that the opinion from the guy that voted, i dunno, the Ute Wassermann album won't have much weight.
>>
>>69655808
also they should fire Steph Kretowicz ASAP
>>
>>69644729
I wonder why that one critic decided to put Still Brazy at the top. I think it's good, but I think it's definitely outclassed by Tribe
>>
>>69655869
I know you most likely just pulled out a random example but that Ute Wasserman album was also a Dec 2015 release which also probably worked against it
>>
>>69655868
I didn't even realize she actually worked for The Wire. I thought she was just a bleme journalist.
>>
>>69655991
same, lad
>>
>>69655981
yeah i actually googled it. no way an album like that will get any weight.

i dunno, they probably have their reasons to keep the system like this, but i think that a non-numbered list in which each voter picks and writes about an album would be more representative about the magazine, and in that way the poor lad that likes Ute would be able to see it next to the others. sure, it would cause new problems (what if two critics liked the same album the most?) but it would more faithful to what the only (or one of the very few) magazine that gets excited about avant-acts like Alterations working on new music represents.
>>
>>69656047
maybe they just get excited about alterations cus toop was (is?) a regular contributer to the wire lol (i'm joking).

but yeah, i get what your saying mate and ia. i understand the want for a more democratized system but in the age of the increasingly capitalistic and homogenized music press, esoteric and independent choices/coverage is vital and should be of the utmost priority imo.
>>
Kanye did nothing wrong
>>
>>69656133
Otherwise you have wannabes like Steph Kretowicz or Aurora Mitchell (most notably for getting to twitter spats with people from the /bleep/ threads) coming in an putting Rihanna or Beyonce's sister as their top pick for album of the year in THE FUCKING WIRE ffs.

Blonde is my album of the year, I was hugely underwhelmed when it came out because I expected another album like Channel Orange, after a couple more listens I was completely drawn into the lyrics and detailed production. Imo a much better album than Channel Orange. It's just a little less accessible as in it requires multiple listens to feel what Frank is getting at, whereas Channel Orange was pretty straight forward.
tl;dr once Blonde clicks with you it clicks hard
