Greek Edition

>"Dungeon Synth is a genre of music characterized by its strong use of atmosphere and melody to create a sonic reality usually pertaining, in concept, to the fantastic or historical periods. The genre draws influence from the Dark Ambient music genre, while encompassing musical structures that are relatable to medieval and folk music."

I keep trying to make things with medieval vibes but I can't really use DAWs that well. I got some crappy yamaha keyboards though.

Should dungeon synth not be made with hardware instruments? Should I just try to use a DAW?

>>

I say that because it's what I've seen small bandcamps do. Unless you plan on selling them somewhere in real life.
>>
>>69649754
Depends on if you are involving a third party/who it is. If you have the materials and ability to dub, >>69649862 is not a bad idea depending on the volume of orders. If using the third party, tapes are relatively cheap so 50-100 should be plenty if you're confident in the release.

Alright, sorry for blog post in advance, but you guys seem friendly and willing to help.

I'm a total noob when it comes to making music. I've only made 2 tracks and only released one, and I made both of those in a crappy free download windows app.
I like the fact that ds doesn't rely on advanced musical knowledge, and I like creating more ambient, experimental stuff anyway, so I'd really like to get into making it. I have a lot of ideas but no way of realizing them.
What's the easiest (free) program to use for this?
I really don't want to have to take months to learn a complicated program, not because I'm lazy about it and trying to take shortcuts, but because I feel like it will hinder my creativity and spontaneous flow. If y'all can help me at all, I will love you even more than I do now.

tl;dr,
what's the best free music production program for a total babby newfag?

Someone on /dsd/ might find this interesting:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgDYeJtCdM0

It's turkish psychedelic rock from the 80s, but it uses a lot of synths and trad. folk melodies which makes it slightly overlap with DS.
>>
>>69668010
Oh yeah I've been thinking of doing that too
>>

Those aren't too hard to come by!

Thanks. Can't wait to listen while playing some vidya. I loved the story when I read it in high school so looking forward to this.

Speaking of vidya I bought baldur's gate off steam and damn that is a good DS companion game

just jump right the fuck in, but check out Lord Lovidicus and Erang for the "heavy hitters" of the genre although i'm personally not incredibly fond of either of them.

Yeah, it's on bc, the Trollman stuff is on slsk.

Guys, a internet friend of mine created a DS forum at the request of the people in the DS fb group. Can I post the link to it or it is against the rules? It is still pretty sterile look-wise so don't complain about that still.

Maybe we could stick this to to next /dsd/ thread? This way everyone will have somewhere to go after Dungeon-Synth December ends.
>>

Assuming /dsd/ doesn't just become /dsg/ but yeah!
>>
>i've never heard of this so it must be a madeup genre

fuck these trap rap and "indie" fans that come into every ds thread to bitch about people actually discussing music

god this board is shit. i don't even listen to dungeon synth very much but these are the only worthwhile threads on /mu/ now that /metal/ has just become a metal themed shitposting thread
>>
>>69681963
/mu/ is not really a haven of musical discussion, nor was it ever. But I understand your plight
>>
>>69681939
i dont know if it has enough energy or content to make it a year round general but thats my opinion
>>
>>69682024
Maybe...maybe that forum will? I guess we'll see
>>
>>69682024
If dungeon synth in and of itself doesn't move fast enough, we should expand our horizons to discuss other dark ambient music as well as ambient black metal and folk metal music.
>>
>>69682119
Like im not saying turn this into a multi-genre general, but if some non-DS music is making strides in a medieval/folk/ambient direction, we should be able to discuss and appreciate that here.

Really great stuff. Similar lo-fi sound to Hedge Wizard, honestly, though the composition may not quite match it. Wouldn't be surprised if this person used a similar recording technique. Still thoroughly enjoyable.
>>
>>69683472
Oh lmao. Is that franchise considered kvlt? I personally don't care for it
>>
>>69684751

How funny is it that the pleasant good vs evil, elf songs and tasty food book is the biggest Dungeon Synth influence out there, but the fantasy series that tries to be dark and edgy isn't considered kvlt?
>>
>>69684743
Oh yeah that was mentioned earlier. Very good 2016 DS, and dark souls inspired

Which do you prefer? Stark, atmospheric minimalism or lush, immersive arrangements?
>>

Generally the first, but it really depends more on how it's used. Erdstall uses really epic, orchestral-sounding arrangements, and he's one of my favourites.

Aside from the obvious LOTR and fantasy tales that's hard to say. I am tempted in trying this combo out but my attention span isn't so great. I feel like some nonfiction might be cool. Medieval shit

Lord of the Rings is the classic DS book.
