>At the end of 2016, Lemonade appeared on a number of critics' lists ranking the year's top albums. According to Metacritic, it was the second most prominently ranked record of 2016.[75] Rolling Stone,[76] Billboard, [77] Entertainment Weekly,[78] Digital Spy, [79]The Independent,[80] Idolator,[81] Stereogum,[82] Complex[83] and Consequence of Sound[84] considered the album the best one of 2016. Paste,[85] USA Today[86] and NPR[87] also included the release on their list of best albums of 2016 at number 2. For Slant it was the third best,[88] while Exclaim! listed the album at number 4 on their list of the Top 20 Pop & Rock Albums of 2016.[89] For Spin, it was the 6th best album of 2016.[90] NME listed Lemonade at number 11 on their list of best albums of the year.[91] Esquire magazine included Lemonade among the 20 best releases of 2016.[92]

Is this album a meme or does it genuinely deserve all that praise?

>And do you belong? I do.
The tone.

It’s the same one that says to your friend, “BOY…. go on over there and hand me my bag” at the airport, assuming he’s a porter.

It’s the same one that tells you, “m’am, go into that other line over there” when you are checking in at the airport at the first class counter before you even open up your mouth.

It’s the same one that yells and screams at you and your mother in your sleep when you’re on the train from Milan to Basel “give me your passport NOW.” You look around to see if anyone else is being requested this same thing only to see a kind Italian woman actually confront the agents on your behalf and ask why you are being treated this way.

It’s the same tone that the officer has when she tells you your neighborhood is blocked for residents only as you and your friends drive home from a Mardi Gras parade, when you have a residents tag on your car. You’ve been in the car line for 10 minutes and watched them let every one else pass without stopping them at all.

It usually does not include “please.” It does not include “will you.” It does not include “would you mind,” for you must not even be worth wasting their mouths forming these respectable words. Although, you usually see them used seconds before or after you.

You don’t feel that most of the people in these incidents do not like black people, but simply are a product of their white supremacy and are exercising it on you without caution, care, or thought.

Many times the tone just simply says, “I do not feel you belong here.”

Imagine.

Telling your son and his friend Rasheed about a band you love and one that played a pivotal role in the history of hip-hop. Something that as a family you all feel very connected to.

Imagine, although the kids are interested, they are still 11, unfamiliar, and would rather be spending their Friday night differently. You and your husband are always talking to your son about expansion and being open to other things and experiences, so you guys make the Kraftwerk concert a family Friday night.

You get there about 10 minutes late, but lucky for you, as soon as you walk to your box seats, the song that you just played for your son in the car is on! It’s a song his uncle sampled, ” The Hall of Mirrors.” You haven’t even sat down yet because you just walked to your seat and you’re so excited to dance to this DANCE MUSIC SONG.

Simultaneously, a much older black venue attendant comes over to your son and his friend and yells “No electronic cigarettes allowed, you need to stop doing that now!”

You are too into the groove and let your husband handle it and tell the attendant that the children are 11 years old, and it’s actually the two grown white men in front of you guys who were smoking them.

You are annoyed and feel it’s extremely problematic that someone would challenge their innocence, but determined to stay positive and your husband has handled this accordingly.

About 20 seconds later, you hear women yell aggressively, “Sit down now, you need to sit down right now” from the box behind you. You want to be considerate, however, they were not at all considerate with their tone, their choice of words, or the fact that you just walked in and seem to be enjoying yourself.

>>
>>69635229
You are also confused as to what show you went to. This is a band that were pioneers of electronic and dance music. Surely the audience is going to expect you to dance at some point.

You were planning on sitting down after this song, as long as it wasn’t one of the four songs that you really connect with and plan on getting down to.

You feel something heavy hit you on the back of your shoulder, but consider that you are imagining things because well….certainly a stranger would not have the audacity.

Moments later, you feel something again, this time smaller, less heavy, and your son and his friend tell you those ladies just hit you with a lime.

You look down only to see the half eaten lime on the ground below you.

You inhale deeply. Your husband calmly asks the group of women did they just throw trash at you. One woman says, “I just want to make it clear, I was not the one who yelled those horrible, nasty, things at you.”

Loud enough for you to hear.

This leads you to believe they were saying things way worse than what you heard, but you are not surprised at that part one bit.

You’re full of passion and shock, so you share this story on Twitter, hands shaking, because you actually want these women to face accountability in some kind of way. You know that you cannot speak to them with out it escalating because they have no respect for you or your son, and this will only end badly for you and feel it’s not worth getting the police involved. So, you are hoping they will hear you this way.
>>
>>69622222
>>
>>69635242
You know when you share this that a part of the population is going to side with the women who threw trash at you. You know that they will come up with every excuse to remove that huge part of the incident and make this about you standing up at a concert “blocking someone’s view.”

You know that a lot of the media will not even mention the trash being thrown at you with your 11 year old son being present.

You feel that the headline would be “XYZ Goes To A Concert And Gets Trash Thrown At Them,” if it were some of your other non-black peers in the industry.

You constantly see the media having a hard time contextualizing black women and men as victims every day, even when it means losing their own lives.

You do not care in that moment because you understand that many of your followers will understand and have been through this same type of thing many a times, and if it means them hearing you say it’s ok, you will rise again through out these moments, then it means something bigger to you.

You realize that you never called these women racists, but people will continuously put those words in your mouth.

What you did indeed say is, “This is why many black people are uncomfortable being in predominately white spaces,” and you still stand true to that.
>>
>>69635254
You and your friends have been called the N word, been approached as prostitutes, and have had your hair touched in a predominately white bar just around the corner from the same venue.

The statement you made makes headlines funny enough just days after it comes to light that Air China warns their flyers not to go into Indian, Pakastani, or Black neighborhoods in order to stay safe, while Texas schools are fighting to have textbooks calling Mexicans “lazy” removed from classrooms, and while Native Americans are doing everything they can possibly to to protect their sacred land from an oil pipeline being built on graves of their descendants. You know that people of colors’ “spaces” are attacked every single day, but many will not be able to see it that way.

This also comes during a time when the Housing Authority of New Orleans has declared a federal mandate plan to assist with helping to protect black neighborhoods, stating that “previously black neighborhoods on higher ground are now majority white or moving in that direction.” And not too long after an announcement is made that a former Klu Klux Klan leader is running for Louisiana senator. You also know where you live.

You are also fully aware, now that you use your platform consistently to speak out on social, racial, and feminist issues, that people who have no awareness of your work outside of gossip sites and magazines, some of which who are most likely voting for Donald Trump, have been starting to engage and/or target you in public and social media in regards to race.

(And yes, having white people constantly call you the n word, or say you and your people are degenerates that need to leave America, or zoo like animals, surely does not help you feel more comfortable in predominately white spaces)
>>
>>69635138
It's contextual. She was at a concert for old white people. She started dancing. They yelled at her and threw a lime. She saw it as an attack on her race. There kinda is some credence to that thought, but it's inadvertent. They didn't attack her because she is black, but dancing at a Kraftwerk concert in 2016 definitely sounds like something a black person who doesn't go to concerts for old white people too often would do.

It's like she wants social spaces for old white people to change, which is absolutely silly.
>>
holy shit I could have sworn Chance, Bowie, Frank or Beyonce would have gotten number one. How painfully obvious is it that they wanted to give Solange something over her sister?

Oh well. First time an aoty has gone to an album rated below a 9 since Silent Shout in 2006.
>>
>>69635268
You read headlines that say, “Solange feels uncomfortable with white people,” and want to use the classic “I have many white friends” or “Half of my wedding guests were white” line to prove that you do not dislike white people but dislike the way that many white people are constantly making you feel. Yet you know no amount of explaining will get you through to this type of person in the first place.

You have lived a part of your life in predominately white spaces since you were a kid and even had your 3rd grade teacher tell you “what a nigger is” in front of your entire white class. You watched your parents trying to explain why this was wrong to her and learned then it can be virtuously impossible to get your point across.

After you think it all over, you know that the biggest payback you could have ever had (after, go figure, they then decided they wanted to stand up and dance to songs they liked) was dancing right in front of them with my hair swinging from left to right, my beautiful black son and husband, and our dear friend Rasheed jamming the hell out with the rhythm our ancestors blessed upon us saying….

We belong. We belong. We belong.

We built this.

The ranking for Radiohead was hilarious, because it was clearly "okay we have to put them in the top 10" but since they're white dudes, they take a backseat to every black person or woman (and one dead legend.)

Their highest rated album barely cracks their own top 10.

This is pitchfork's jump the shark moment.

I've followed this website since 2010, almost 7 years of my life.

Almost every day I check their site around 10'o clock, just out of habit at this point. Even if I'm busy or not near a computer, when 10 comes around I think, "Oh hey, that's when pitchfork puts out reviews."

I know the scores of most of my favorite albums, of albums I hate, of all the big releases. I could name the top 10 of just about every year I've followed, and of decade lists they've done, all kinds of stuff. I always submit my list to the readers' poll, especially that big one they did of the 2000s.

The site has long since ceased to be good. I probably started to hate it somewhere in 2013/2014. But still I've kept this ritual.

Why? Why have I done this? Why waste any mental energy on this site which has clearly gone down the tubes entirely in quality, if they were ever actually good?

This is somewhat of a wakeup call, /mu/. How did I get to this point? I feel like I'm waking up from a long dream, like I slept through the last 7 years.

Surely I can't be alone in this. Anyone else know what I mean?

Crazy how less than ten years ago Pitchfork used to gargle on every indie rock bands' balls, attempting to break any new artist from Brooklyn. Fast forward to 2016 and they just sift through black Twitter, create a generic list appealing to the lowest common denominator and bam... retweets galore! You win Conde Nast.

>>
>>69635315
Not really 'cause you treated this shit too seriously. I enjoy Pitchfork. I started getting into music thanks to Pitchfork back in 2009 (when /mu/ and P4K were crazy for MPP). It's been fun following them these past eight years.

Have they changed? Most definitely, but it's been neat being there to witness the transition over time. And it's not just them, really. It's a noticeable cultural change within American society. P4K used to be counter-culture in a sense, but they realized that they could be at the forefront of culture and started riding that.

It's so tough to find counter-culture anymore.

Man, I miss old P4k. :(

Even if they were never great, they still covered a lot of shit I did end up liking a lot and put the spotlight on good stuff that other websites with their size would not; but now that they're A Condé Nast Publication, they are completely indistinguishable from any other big music website.

Sucks man. :/

Preach!

No lie, they used to break some decent, new artists that nobody has heard before. Even if I didn't exactly like them it was refreshing to see a site reporting on shit before everyone else did. >>
>>69635400
Probably, yep. I only started reading them when I was like a senior in HS, sometime in like...2008. At that point I wouldn't say they were breaking bands through regularly anymore, but they had a pretty large audience at that point, and the music that received the bulk of their coverage was still relatively "underground" opposed to what their peers wrote about. They are fully a pop music website that also happens to cover indie/alternative/underground music at this point, when they used to be completely the opposite.

I mean, they used to curate what they would even review pretty heavily. They wouldn't even review Beyoncé back in the day, I think the first album of hers that they even wrote up was within the past 5 years or so.

And I don't even really have a problem with that stuff with you like it, but damn, it's just kinda like....does this shit have to clog up my favorite website for music now too?

>they were pretty crucial in exposing me to broader, more varied music. maybe they were never good (and i could never tell because i had no other frame of reference), but this is just a sad reminder of passing youth.

This pretty much sums up how I feel. I have nostalgia for Pitchfork and I remember when I was a teenager taking their word as gospel a lot of the time, and I agree with what you said, I think I recognize that a lot of the stuff I liked because of them was as good as I thought, although a lot of it truly was, and they really were the gateway for me when I started actually caring about music and seeking it out to listen to "seriously" and all that.

And yeah, it does feel very much like a thing from my youth that is completely dead or at least unrecognizable from what it used to be - I don't think I would have gotten into music as heavily if I was starting to dig in to all of it if I was reading the Pitchfork of today.

But hey yknow, everything changes I suppose, and I had already stopped relying on them heavily as my primary source of discovering music years ago, so I guess the only thing to be sad about at this point is nostalgia.

Fucking this. I mean, I don't really like or listen to much hip hop, but it's at least it's more interesting than the indie pop that used to be top in their lists (Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver)

But the alt right literally want a to pass oppressive laws

Both the left and the right and anything in between is capable of oppressive behavior, you don't get to excuse yourself from that because of your ideology alone. "They're the real oppressive ones!" Get over yourself.

LEL, wake up anon its almost 2017!
>>
>>69636223
Are you kidding? I guess you probably ignore all liberal media but a lot of liberal media refers to the alt right as cool.
>>
>>69637098
Name some.
>>
>>69636330
Listing GG as alt-right remains one of the stupidest things leftists have done and one of the first stones laid on the path to their eventual loss of the election.
>>
>>69637017
Of course, because it's trendy to hate whites now. "Look at us in our ivory tower, we can invoke sociological definitions to defend our racism now."

When do you think the decline started?
>>
>>69637246
Not OP, but I would say directly after MBDTF's 10/10
>>
I did not give a listen to any track of any album of this shitty list. I feel proud
>>
>>69637273
You shouldn't
>>
>>69637273
wow you sound really cool, congratulations on not listening to most relevant albums this year
>>
I have to say I'm slightly pleasantly surprised that this wasn't a totally predictable #1, Solange was definitely going to be top 10 but I wouldn't have thought top 5 or even #1, Still though I predicted 23 of their top 25, so Pitchfork is still the most bland and predictable shit in the world.

Like what I predicted versus what actually happened. Only surprise is no Wildflower on the entire top 50. Just odd.

Frank Ocean is legit one of the best song/album writers of this generation.

then i suppose the art of songwriting isn't exactly in rude health

Blonde is better than Channel Orange, more drums would destroy it.

I'm 99% sure Avalanches and Death Grips weren't in the list for snubbing their show.

Is the album as First World Problem-y as the blurb makes it sound?

overrated shit

Pitchfork is heading for a meme singularity. They will collapse under their own meme weight soon.

Weren't the blacks all up in arms about that a few years ago?
>>
now where the FUCK is Atrocity Exhibition
is DB not black enough?
>>
>>69638486
It's not about muh blackness so they don't care. Plus AE was influenced by post punk, that shit was made by cis males, that has no place on their list
>>
>Skeleton Tree not even in the top 10
>No autechre
>No DEP
>No Avalanches
>No Xiu Xiu
>No Denzel Curry (???)

why do people still bother with this meme? P4k are playing identity politics
their meme is now complete
