Could someone explain why Mastodon and Crowbar are considered sludge? Mastodon is clearly and exclusively prog metal and Crowbar just sounds like heavy nickelback.

Mastodon's Remission is proggy sludge, but sludge nonetheless

Crowbar helped define the sludge sound and were part of the New Orleans slow-paced metal, I think they're pretty sludge
