>>
Eh, wanted to make a demonstration how long it takes to tune my floyd rose guitar for people who consider buying a floyd rose, but an error happened during the recording and you hear alot of clicks. oh well.

Have this clicky recording if you want so you can see how long it takes (less than 10 minutes, and i wasn't hurrying. i was still making some adjustments while the video was uploading tho desu)
https://clyp.it/k2cg2tta

I actually think there was something very pleasing about the slightly untuned sound my guitar before i tuned it btw. just saying
>>

Grant Green - Idle Moments
>>
>>69616652
Tuning only ever takes a long time on a double locking trem if you change to a new tuning or change string gauges. Otherwise it's quicker than a regular guitar and it goes out of tune a lot less often
>>
>>69616730
sometimes the mini-tuners at the bridge get to their limit and you must open the lock at the nut to retune it
>>
>>69616734
>using the fine tuners for actual tuning
good job wrecking your trem
the locking nut takes about two seconds to open
a properly set up floyd barely takes more time to tune
>>
>>69616742
I used them for fine tuning, but i have this guitar for years, they have reached their end

So i had to open the lock to retune the guitar from the tuners of the head

And after i did that i fine tuned a bit more with the bridge tuners

running your scales up/down will only help you run your scales up/down faster. you can try playing intervals on those scales (eg 135, 245, 367, etc)

but i would recommend learning a few chuck berry songs. his licks incorporate a lot of different fingerings/left hand movement that will really improve your dexterity. if you h8 chuck, then just learn a new solo. practice how you play is the key, if you want to play licks faster, you gotta practice licks. if you want to play scales faster, practice scales, etc.

The term you're looking for is scarf joint. They exist to provide the proper amount of break to keep the strings in the nut. Fender doesn't use them, instead they use string trees. A lot of Fender copies use trees. Jackson uses scarf joints, I own one. Kramer uses one closer on the head stock, Ibanez uses them as well.

Do you already have an SM57 and an interface ?
If yes, don't buy anything and save up for a real amp.
If no, then buy an interface, pirate some plugins or download some free ones.
>>
>>69619338
Decent practice simple, but very fucking brittle to listen to, its possible, but there are better things for less money
>>
I currently have pic related for practice, and it sounds pretty ok for being such a tiny ass amp and is pretty mobile.
In case i want a better amp what wattage should i get or what are the factors to consider besides liking the sound? I know jack shit about amps
>>
>>69619542
>what are the factors to consider besides liking the sound?
Clean volume and volume.
Clean volume is how loud your amp can be while staying clean, usually higher wattage amps distort at a louder point than low wattage amps.
Volume is just plain and simple volume. And louder doesn't mean necessarily better, keep in mind how big your audiance, if you have any, is and what do you need it for.
Besides that, the sound itself resides in the build and inner circuitry (and contrarily to the popular belief, tubes does not mean better), and the cab, which speaker it uses, its dimensions and whether it is open/half open/closed back
For playing over a drummer, while playing distorted, I'd say you want a bare minimum of 20w through a 1x12". That's what I use and as long as my bassist friend doesn't go crazy on his 300w 4x10, it'll be good.
Of course if you play in venues with PA and competent sound guys, volume is less of a concern, but you'll never be sure whether it is the case or not unless you've already been there.
>>
>>69619614
>and whether it is open/half open/closed back
What difference does it make?

I bought a Gibson Les Paul a few months ago off ebay and I really like it. However it came with a bunch of shit in it - coil splits for both pickups and a boost circuit with push-push pots. I never use any of these things, and the wiring looks like a rats nest.

Is it worth just ripping it all out and replacing it with high quality pots and wiring it like a normal one, or do you think it is more hassle than it is worth? Surely that stuff has an effect on the sound even when its off, there are a LOT of wires.

>>
>>69619898
If you have a wire that goes into the ground (basically what happens when a coil split is off for example), it won't affect anything.
And as >>69619977 says, the difference is completely unnoticeable, you'll gain most likely less than 0.5 dB in the high frequencies (2kHz and up), which is not part of the guitar's timbre.

>>
>>69616032
Child sized First Act acoustic, one with the plastic tuner covers that are retarded. Was red with flame stickers. Badass, but that goes without saying.
Funny, my brother had the same one but a different color, and we cut two strings off of it to "simulate a bass". So stupid, but those were the dayz

My friend has one of those. He doesn't play it anymore because he's too lazy to adjust the truss rod, change the strings and just clean that fucking thing. Plus he got a new Ibanez so he doesn't play his other ones anymore really either. It's not really a bad guitar imo.
The pickguard is going yellow because he smokes in his room with it. His Ibanez is all white so he better put that bitch in a case when he's done with it (he doesn't)

Thoughts on this?
Been thinking of getting it. Played it for a while and liked it.
My only gripes are that there's no master volume or reverb on the amp
Any suggestions for similar amps in the same price range

My current amp is my father's Fender Quad Reverb, but unfortunately it's time to give it back

Even though it sounds amazing and I'd like to keep it forever, I'll have to give it back soon.
Besides it's heavy, takes up a lot of space and I'm always worried that it might get damaged or maybe even stolen, so a smaller combo is much more practical. I wouldn't have to be so worried when I take it with me or let someone else play it.

I've had the quad for the last 3-4 years in my band's rehearsal space and even though he has a music man 112 RD to keep him company, he'd like to have it back.

Why dont peeps make guitars out of oak?

Only thing i can find are people saying, "lmfao its not tone wood, shiggity didgeridoo, itll sound like a floor/front door/kitchen table" or "i had an uncle that made one but i never went over his house cause he used to touch me"

The only thing i can figure is that solidbody electrics started being produced around the time oak was a really popular wood for furniture and cabinets(still is but solid wood anything is less and less common), so it was easier to source large quanities of basswood and alder. Mahogany is used in a lot of furniture, but its use was always less common than oak in the us.

Asking because im thinking about building a guitar, and its incredibly easy for me to source oak.

Sometimes theyre trying to move stock, cabs take up a lot of space. A good amount of people arent interested in buying cabs, just heads, theyll have found a cab they like l, put speakers in it they like and roll woth it for years. Or theyre just cheao and theyre content with the shitty 410 from their ss marshall stack their parents bought them for $200 new. There was a point my local GC had all the used heads out front with the cabs in the back because they took up so much floor space when people werent buying them together anyways.

Single side tuners non-pointy > single single side tuners pointy > the tele headstock (5) > double row tuners UNLESS the headstock narrows to decrease the space between the top two (so D and G don't hit the nut at a sharp angle

My favorites from this bunch are the Kramer hockey stick, the Ibanez, and the strat headstock (4). I've always hated the look of the tele headstock. It's so, i dunno, limp and weak looking to me. Like a headstock designed by committee. Marketing committee that tries to please every possible demographic and winds out producing something that has no special appeal to any of them.

Honestly, how useful is a kemper? I do a lot of recording and filling in with random people, anything from jangly pop chords to modern shred solos to jazz fuckery, i got 5 amps ill use for different occasions. Ive been seriously considering getting one sometime next year, or an axe fx.

3 questions, basically.
1. How many different setting do you actually use?
2. Are you satisfied with it, is it just good enough or do you prefer the way it sounds?
3. What made you pick it over an axe fx?

Gear question too, do you run it through the laneys power amp?

I'm not the 'separate presets for every single song on the setlist' type of guy, so I don't even utilize half of it's powers and sold the controller pedal board I got bundled with it and don't use it live anymore because it would be total overkill for me
but it's my go-to recording setup now
the built in fx are pretty nice but I like it the most because of it's core functions: everything you 'profile' the right way just sounds super neat and responds well to the volume pot and pedals in front in terms of driving it more or cleaning up and that's the way I play mostly
I don't really use a lot of downloaded profiles or even the factory ones, I use the ones I make myself with my own gear or what I pulled from friends' setups
that way I can keep the amps in the rehearsal rooms at uni all the time and still record at home with the sounds I like and no setting up whatsoever

I picked it over the axe fx because I got a really good deal on it
also I would use maybe 5% of the axe fx's features. everytime I sit in front of one I'm totally overwhelmed and have no idea where to start so I end up skipping through loads of presets loaded with effects I don't want - the kemper feels just the opposite: you can instantly tweak stuff and start playing because the front panel is really intuitive

yeah, really thick strings have a noticeably thicker tone, it takes a really long time to get used to bending them too. my advice is unless youre tuning to C standard or lower, you dont need .60 gauge strings
im using .52's right now in E standard just because i like how easily i can bend them
i used to be a thick string guy for a long time, but holy hell its hard to bend
try out a bunch of different strings though, theres a lot of options, see what works for ya

I was thinking of that too actually. But I want something more versatile. Not just for playing metal.

I've had it done to half of my guitars and will do them to the other half when they get set up or repaired or whatever next time.

In this case it isn't the weight, it's the volume and density of the wood. Oak is heavy as shit per cubic inch as compared to Swamp ash or Basswood

$800 budget for a general, all-arounder guitar. Suggestions? Should I go for a Strat? I intend on tinkering with it down the line as far as pick ups go.
>>

Fairly sure there's an 800 dollar American HSS strat on the market
>>
>>69619421

Pirate Bias FX and spend the rest on a decent audio interface for your PC and some Monitor Speakers.

You cannot record decent sounding guitar tracks live on a budget. It just doesnt work. Go full digital.

I think it's closer to $900, it's the "American Special," which is American made just not with the pickups as the regular American.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking of. There's also the "Deluxe" which is $800 MIM

Used PRS vela, s2 standard 22, Fender american strat, or Music man Silouette would be my recommendations

For new guitars in that price range, the new mexican fender deluxe range is really nice, and I was blown away by how well the mexican Charvel guitars play. They look kinda metallish, but the pickups they have are pretty good all around humbuckers. No crazy high output Djentlord PUs.

I second the Charvel recommendation but only if it's in a neon colorway.

What's your budget and what kind of music do you play? There are far better choices for the price of a new Blues Junior (good clean tones but it's drive channel is straight up unusable).

Play bass like how you would play guitar

Different anon, but also Chicago here. It's a really great store with awesome employees. They only really have PRS, Gibson, and Fender products, but their selection of those is huge.

>>69631006

Don't do it. You'll be that guy who plays bass but is really a guitarist. If anything politely let them know that if they ever need a guitarist you're in town.
>>
For those with Floyds, how often do you change your strings? I'm dreading changing mine that I've had on for a while even though I know how to change them on a floyd. I just don't want to accidentally fuck it up and have to take it in to get set up
>>

About a month, more or less. I'm not playing out at the moment so they stay on longer.

alright i need some help
i've gotten into swing a long time ago, but recently i want to actually play some big band tunes. aside from freddie greene, are there any other videos/lessons to learn from? are there any other sources of info to learn swing? i know it's jazz but i don't really want to spend a lot of time learning jazz for swing. i want the basics and maybe i'll build from there. also any recommendations for early 20's swing? freddie green, duke, cab, count basie, goodman and all are more 40's and 50's style swing.

>>69616032

look for something on reverb. really any semi hollow can do the trick. i mean, that's how they did it back then so why not?

>>69619898
if you know how to solder, yes diy. shit's easy if you're just going to wire it back to factory settings. really cleans up the guitar and brings back some brightness now that some of all that wiring is gone

>>69620542
cool shit, anon. my dream guitar is really basic, just an mim strat all i did was swap out the 5 way for a 3 way.

>>69620550
do some stretches, that's about it. also practice slow and build up speed, don't try and nail it on the first try. i'm learning staccato picking for surf guitar like dick dale and i end up using my elbow rather than my wrist which is what im working on.

Same frequency as I would with a hardtail. It's very simple procedure so long as you're using the same tuning and string gauge. Make sure to change one string at a time (don't take all off at once) and everything will go smoothly.

I'm like right on the border of Jeff/Portage. Just off Montrose.
>>
>>69631581
How 'bout that Hagen's, man?

I used to live right by Higgins and Austin. When I move back into the area I'll be at Austin/Lawrence.

What kind of music are you into/do you play?
>>
>>69631478

ahh gotcha. The 50w peavey valvekings have a decent blackfacey clean channel pedal platform and theres one sitting in the used section of every guitar center on earth for 200 or less. Used Classic 30s go for a little bit more than that and are great for a voxyish/tweed clean indy sound.

If youre ignoring drive channels and just using it as a pedal platform though, there isnt anything wrong with the Blues junior. It just doesnt have a ton of clean headroom for gigging situations.

I don't really play a whole lot as of recent. I've played on and off for about 20 years. Happen to be in an off phase now. Doesn't stop me from buying more gear, though.

Hi guys! I am thinking on upgrading my amp and cabinet. I currently own a micro dark with a bugera 1x12 cabinet. I want an amp head that can go from blues/jazz, to metal(prog metal). My budget is $1,500(If it's less than $1000 even better). Thanks in advance. Just in case you are wondering, the guitars that I own are: Prs se custom 24, and a Guild OM-140CE.
>>
>>69633043
theres a lot of options out there for you man
if you just want a bigger cabinet, marshall 4x12 is the way to go, extremely cheap and if you ever wanted another high quality cab, the marshall would compliment it nicely
as for heads, do you want something older or newer? older tube heads are surprisingly cheap, i snagged my sound city 120 for $800, and it stays clean all the way up to 10 and is arguably one of the loudest tube heads ever built, next to the Sunn 300T
reverb.com is your place for both the head and cab, shouldnt be hard at all to get a killer half stack for just around $1000
