Dungeon Synth is a genre that came out of 1990s black metal/dark ambient scene. The music is purposely made with old synths and based on medieval music. Think Runescape music.

>I think I like the idea of this genre more than the music itself.
I also share this feeling.
I'm yet to hear a dungeon synth album that got everything right. They never reach their full potential. Also, many seem to be trying too hard sometimes.

But despite all this it's still a great genre.

I'm dicking around with my VSTs in dorian mode trying to come up with epic melodies but it all just kind of falls flat.

I don't understand that. Apparently most DS artists write in dorian mode and yet their stuff sounds a lot more powerful.

So far all I come up with is church choir kind of stuff.

>for people to start wearing Burzum shirts and listening to black metal to seem interesting

that doesn't make it mainstream though. i've only ever met one or two other people irl who listen to black metal, or even who know what black metal is. deafheavan may have popularized it a little bit within the general music community, but it's not like normies are listening to sunbather on their beats or anything like that

It's been around since the 1990s, but back then I don't remember anybody calling it *anything* really. What's your favorite album you've listened to so far.

Might as well get all the early Mortiis and Depressive Silence albums since they're all good.
Cadeceus - Middle Ages
Daoine Sidhe - s/t
Arthame - Fiendish Symphonies

This band gets my top recommendation for DS listeners:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gUFVefSrn4

Also, they don't fit they "dungeon synth" tag, but for really creepy atmospheric music that sits well along side DS, listen to Moevot. None of the music on pootube but worth finding a download.

i really like the aesthetic and feel of ds but even as someone whose exposure to classical is limited, I just really haven't been impressed by the compositions. I make dungeon synth without knowing very much about musical theory either. As with most 'ambient' genres people are expected to take more time developing the sound and timbre of their instruments then they are developing melodies or anything like that.

It's not that weird. If you listen to a lot of music you can pick things up relatively easily.

Additionally, I personally prefer the more lo-fi dungeon synth artists who make their music with a bare minimum of changes over the course of the song, and who stick to maybe one or two melodies that they repeat. The better and more well-composed it sounds to me the more likely I am to give it a pass.

Also I liked your Tyrannus album. I've been following your music for a while and downloaded your whole discography at this point I think.
