>lyrics contain a curse word other than butt
>lyrics contain a curse word other than "dag nabbit"
i know this is a joke thread but unless its hip hop, cursing in music just seems edgey
>Lyrics contain a curse word

It's also edgy in hip hop. No idea why that genre gets a free pass for people singing about rape, murder, and drug abuse with a healthy peppering of profanity, but other genres doing the same thing is somehow worse. Half of those guys are just studio gangsters that didn't do any of that in their everyday life to begin with.

I was not implying that all hip hop was about those things. I like Buck 65 very much, along with Death Grips, but let's not pretend that the latter is incredibly edgy.

"Work safe" is defined as "content that is safe for viewing in the average working environment." Boards that default to the Yotsuba B or Burichan (blue) theme are to be considered work safe. Posting content that is not suitable for this environment may result in a ban. The goal behind enforcing this rule is to keep the cleaner sections of the site accessible to those in restricted viewing situations.

Cursing bugs me in any kind of music. I'm fine with it in anything else so I dunno.

Watch your language
>>69592548
Hip-hop tends to be a lot more lyrically dense than other pop music and the lyrics are usually written in a very informal, conversational style. How many young people do you know that don't use profanity causally in conversation? It's not edgy, hell, if something becomes widespread enough in use it probably even stops being considered profanity at some point. It used to be a big deal for a word like "damn" to show up for God's sake.

If everyone does it it can't be edgy, can it? Is speaking in a local dialect "edgy?"
>>69593250
Not everyone does it. You even said "young people" - cursing casually in conversation skews heavily towards younger people, who tend to be edgier in nature, in contrast to people in their late 20s, 30s, 40s, who naturally typically get more mellow as they get older.
Curse words by their very nature are edgy. That's their whole point. So when you curse all the time you're a major lame-o.
>he listens to music with (((lyrics)))

not him but maybe you should leave the house more
everyone curses
>>69593369
Casually all the time in conversation? No.
But then, I don't hang out with edgelords who are mad at the world but especially mom and dad. So maybe I wouldn't know.
>>69593431
Maybe you just hang out in a place where it's not normal to curse often in conversation.
It doesn't have to do with being an edgelord or not, if you are raised in a place where people curse often in conversation then you will most likely do it too. It's like an accent.
In short, you don't know how words work and your worldview is shit.

You think people freely walk around calling their parents cunts etc.?
Swearing is the best form of emotive language and accepted by the vast majority of society when used without malice. How old are you?

Cursing limits your vocabulary and so it has no place in songwriting where standards are higher than casual conversation.

Not joking, it's a big plus for me when the lyrical component can be made worthwhile without using any dirty words at all.
Makes me feel like I could share it with someone with greater likelihood of them appreciating it.

cursing is the most expressive use of language, it shouldn't bug you at all, if it's there it's there for a reason. Listen to Sleaford Mods for reference.

If it's in a conversation with friends or other non-professional contexts then yeah, people can swear multiple times per second. Not everyone obviously but I've met tons of people who swear as much as you seem to think is impossible.
