I saw Cave live in concert, in Detroit, and he just killed it. Double-encore, complete w/ a new verse to Stagger Lee. The crowd was also incredible. Goth kids, w/ folks in suits and dressed to the nines, and folks in cowboy hats.

I don't understand, however, why you seem to have an issue with appreciating an album for emotional impact. I'm pretty sure an emotional element has always been a key aspect in appreciating art. Also, I do not only love Skeleton Tree for the emotions. I think the instrumentals are detailed and beautiful. I think the vocal performances are stunning and the lyricism is poetic.

If you can't tell that the songwriting is poor then you have some serious issues. Take Dust for example. The whole song repeats a boring riff over and over until a horribly flaccid "climax" which is basically a dumb studio trick that sounds like utter dogshit. Not one song on this album makes me feel anything. It just goes by without leaving any impression. There is no moment that makes me amazed, or think "this is something new I haven't heard before". there is no emotion in this album. no passion. it is just lazy, bland, and boring. Nothing on this record hasn't been done better hundreds of times by hundreds of other bands that came before.

It's not like I've done copious amounts of drugs and sat in the same room for days on end but I can still relate to the feeling of depravity and depression. Downward Spiral is about how fucked his life is and that it's really out of his control. Tell Me What I Don't Know is about people try to help him but there's no use, his life has been fucked because he grew up poor and was forced into selling drugs to get by. Not every album has to be relatable either. I can appreciate an album that tells a story even if I didn't live that sort of life.
