This is a very rough render of a brand new... hardstep? Hell and Bass? song that I just came up with
It's so rough I'm not even sure why I'm posting it.

it's using some arabic scale, I forgot the name

something feels off, like something doesn't fit the mood of the song.
It's supposed to sound like hell on earth but it's not hell-on-earthy enough.

Maybe it's just because it's so rough it doesn't all mesh together

maybe the mixing is so bad that my subconscious is telling me to drink bleach

>>
>>69568970
yeah, the drums need to be completely redone really.
but yeah thanks for the feedback, man. yeah I definitely have to work on that snare. snares are my weak point.

anyone have tips for mixing snares? I for some reason refuse to pan snares center for whatever reason because I just find it too boring for my style,
so I usually pan them very slightly left or right but then it never can sound quite right. something to do with the stereo separation, too. just can't seem to get it right most of the time
>>
>>69569416
You can compress a snare just like a kick drum to make it stand out more
>>
>>69569525
yeah I always compress my snares, but I'm largely self-taught and probably don't understand compression nearly enough at this point.

and as far as panning goes, I know this kind of thing can be style/preference/genre/song-specific, but general methods: how do you like to pan your snares? (specifically electronic/hip-hop type stuff)
>>
>>69569738
center
and if it's widened because of phasing, doubling, layering or what not stereo techniques then either the averaged power should be centered (look at a goniometer) or the very first transient, what ever sounds more natural

Use 90s era instruments and production techniques.

>t. captain obvious

OK then, examples. The pad sound on Pacific State is a sampled Roland D-50 (Casio FZ-1 used to sample) with 909 drums - Orbital I know were using an Alesis SR-16 a lot for drums so they may have used that unit for Chime, the stabs are sampled from gawd knows what.

Both were mixed to analogue tape, in the case of Chime it was recorded on cassette which was used for the master of the first release then transferred to DAT from the cassette when they got signed to FFRR.

So yeah - 80s and early 90s instrumentation, tape (or tape emulation) for mixdown.

>>69578809
I've been "learning" max on and off for like 2 years now. I haven't been able to make anything with it. I must say that if you don't wanna bother learning programming in a very counter-intuitive "graphical" way, you might as well just drop it.

I just posted the pic for memes, I made the track in reaktor5.
>>
>>69578776
nice track senpai
>>
>>69578890
Lol ok...I don't have access to Reaktor but I was able to pirate Max so I guess I'll keep trying with it. It is kind of unintuitive but I have a lot of programming experience with regular languages so I think I have a slight advantage. I don't think I'll make full tracks with it though, I really just want to use it to make weird stutter effects and such.
>>
>>69578978
>I have a lot of programming experience with regular languages so I think I have a slight advantage
That's exactly what I thought before I hit a brick fucking wall of confusion.
I get the appeal, but it's just layers upon layers upon layers of visual clutter.
How someone could record full tracks, let alone albums with it is beyond me.
Reaktor is easy as fuck to pirate (version 5 at least, I haven't tried 6 since I was using 5 for a while now and I kinda know the ins and outs) and easier to use than max imo. It's still just a modular system not a DAW, so you need to record stuff on the fly (as far as i'm concerned).
Of course there is a song sequencer but if you have a bunch of midi knobs and generally not a scrub you can do wild shit with it.

>>69578906
Arigatō
>>
>>69579071
Fair enough, yeah the visual nature of it definitely seems to necessitate a lot of encapsulation, but the fact that I don't know what I'm doing means I don't know what parts to encapsulate in what ways. I figure maybe someday I'll have lots of little Max "functions" that I can call and not have to wire together a bunch of low level shit. Idk.

I'm not sure what you're trying to do but just from your picture, look into Live's instrument rack. You can slice your sample up and put each bit into a sampler or simpler and use the rack to assign them to one key each.
>>
>>69579581
I should probably elaborate more. You have a sound chosen and you press a key and it sequences the sound to that certain part. You change the sound being used and sequence another sound. Press play and every sequenced sound plays in the sequence.
>>
>>69579645
I don't think I've seen anything like that, but why would you want this over manually placing the sounds in order on a timeline?
>>
>>69579645
Sounds kind of like a step sequencer, but using the piano keys. Most drum machines have that, but it doesn't use piano keys. That's what all those buttons along the bottom of an 808 or a 909 are for.

You could look for step sequencer VSTs, idk if you can find one like that though. It sounds cool though.

Also, trackers are somewhat similar, you can use the keys on the computer keyboard in kind of a step sequencer like way.

Trying to learn how to properly use synths, and all the shit that goes with them. I can make music fine with presets and my structuring is good and all but as far as being able to program my own sounds and know what to do to get what I want I can't do just yet.

I've watched part 1 of the NY school of music tutorial and get most of it (though still leaning) although a lot of tutorials sort of assume you know certain terminology or go off on tangents. Any help for getting better at this shit? I don't care if it goes from retard level to adept tutorial wise, I'd just like to be able to know all of the things I'm looking at and what they do.

I'm currently trying things out of Sytrus and starting with that as far as learning the components.

I don't want to rely wholly on pre-sets.

Sytrus is an FM synth which is a bit more complicated. Although some people don't use its FM powers. Subtractive synthesis is the easiest to learn. You just have an oscillator which generates the sound, then you have a filter which removes (subtracts) some part of the sound, and then you have envelopes which cause the filter to change over time. That's the most important parts.
>>
>>69581976
Thanks, man. I've FL Producer edition. If not Sytrus, then should I start with the 3x OSC if that's subtractive? There are a number of synths on here.

It looks like 3x OSC doesn't have envelopes which is a problem. I don't use FL but it looks like the "Wasp" synth is subtractive and has envelopes so that would be good if you have it. You could also download "Synth 1" it's a pretty standard subtractive synth and it's free. It doesn't have the greatest looking interface but it has all the features you would need to learn subtractive synthesis without a bunch of extra stuff.

What are you recording? Are you using a drum machine? I'd like to hear some of what you're doing.
>>
>>69582182
This is just cute. The lead is really catchy and the pads are nice.
The closed hihats are mixed a bit too low. I get what you're going for but don't be afraid to bump it a little.
Also I think it's really missing a bassline.

>>69582527
No you aren't, some tracks are just damn boring.

Hey guys,

I just finished a small sample pack for a university project. It's a sort of house/tech house type of sample pack. 50 one-shots and 50 loops. All are recorded, synthesized and layered with sounds sourced from other projects as required by our criteria:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/3d3j42a3pyt5suw/TEQv1%20Sample%20Pack%20-%20Redist.zip?dl=1

Enjoy!
>>
>>69582875
most not too old thinkpads are good laptops
which makes them good for production, yes
>>
>>69582875
thinkpad yoga so you can doodle on the screen like a cunt
didnt think a touchscreen pressure sensitivity thing would be that useful till i got it, its actually pretty great. ive never had a tablet or anything like that before tho because im poor so its new tech to me.

dank, i have like no samples in my library because im too lazy to find them.

I always struggle creating a good bass sound. :l

thank you for the feedback

Oh boy, I got something for ya that will help with the bass. Or anything really, it's an amazing synth.

what about this?

I use a late T61 without much hassle.
Shit is ancient but somehow the dual core can still pump live 9 with a bunch of vsts like it's nothing.

[Industrial Drum and Bass (I think), 180 BPM, working title "Ozymondias"]
https://clyp.it/1r0ffv1h

hey guys it's >>69568503
I cleaned it up a bit and added a proper intro, it's starting to come together a bit better now

this is the first time I've gotten my drums to sound like a slap in the face rather than taking second chair to the other instruments

the only problem is I think the song is very fatiguing, I need to reduce the sparkle or something

I also think the buildup is a bit /too/ intense for what comes afterwards, I didn't think that was possible.

>>69583286
that saw lead at the beginning doesn't mesh well with the rest of the song

>>69583902
You did a great job creating the illusion of depth. The arpeggiated bass sounds wicked neat too.
I think a rhodes would go real well with this, just to add a little something something to the upper bands
>>69584153
>https://clyp.it/yht3bxfv
this is just me, but I feel like it needs at least one consistent instrument, even if it's just a shaker, and even if it's supposed to be stilted and dysrhythmic, to carry the rhythm along
>https://clyp.it/oayhds0w
can't really say anything, I can't figure out what you're going for here
>>
>>69584278
>the only problem is I think the song is very fatiguing, I need to reduce the sparkle or something

I don't really know much about that genre but it feels like the midrange is a little muddy and the low end is a little light.

>>69584819
How do you repitch your vocal samples? Do you use melodyne, or do you just use ableton's warping or something like it?
>>
>>69584819
the vocals and everything sounds too clean kek. needs something totally out of key and dissonant and harsh. but im sure you dont want that and in that case you did good.
>>
>>69585467
its a great start but it sounds like it needs something more intense for a section or something. for contrast to what youve got.
>>
>>69585497
melodyne for pitch correction, default fl studio for the distortion, newtone if things still sound off
>>
>>69585749
Are you considering this to be a remix of One Call Away, or are you sampling Charlie Puth's vocals?
>>
>>69585636
yeah was fixed on vocals not reliant on reverb/chorus filters. needed consistent throughout or just dropped in?
>>
>>69585854
i'm conflicted. i've posted this somewhere as a charlie puth remix but it has under 20 plays in 4 months. i've seen ppl with similarly sampled tracks release them as original, but in this case i have literally no following so i think either way it doesn't matter since no1curr
>>
does trap and other genres like it get laughed at here?

i posted mine earlier, it's this one for comparison:

Le LIMITER familia
>>
>>69586103
Ya but I did limit it. What limiter did you use? Also I don't use multiband or exciter, do you think that's why?
>>
>>69586044
soundgoodizer, fabfilter, OCD
>>
i'm very new to production, but i don't think my drum loops are the most terrible thing in the world. what bugs me is figuring out where to go after i've started a track, i have too many project files laying around that are just 15 seconds of drums and some shitty placeholder synth with automation because i can't find anything better

how do you come up with melodies and shit? i feel cheap when i do failsafe ones like the stuff that's played on the radio
>>
>>69586316
Just play what feels good and stop listening to the radio.
>>
Is there a cabasa VST out there or one with a cabasa in it?

>>69586469

>>
>>69586316
Just letting you know, no matter how experienced you get, this will always happen. Sometimes you'll make something out of it, sometimes not. It depends on your motivation at that moment in time. You can make something really shit into something semi decent if you keep trying shit. I've done this too many times where I'm stuck with a 8 bar loop of something but I always push myself to try new shit.
>>
>>69586694
thanks man
>>
>>69586022
I think there's people who just come here to stir shit up and they'll do that no matter what you post but no most people here including me will offer feedback.

>>69586316
>what bugs me is figuring out where to go after i've started a track
you need to get inspired my man, you need to have a vision for what you're doing, that way you'll know what to do next.

>how do you come up with melodies and shit?
I listen to tons of music so after a while your brain starts putting everything together and you get tons of inspiration, just gotta make sure to record it on the spot because sometimes it only hits once. I have like 10 .txt's with 1000 ideas each and about 500 projects just with melodies and shit.

>>69586469
like the other anons said, you wanna just get a samplepack they have tons of cabasa loops on them.
>>
>>69587798
>I listen to tons of music so after a while your brain starts putting everything together and you get tons of inspiration
this may be a downside for me since i don't listen to a lot of music, but i've been listening to more and more stuff over the past few years

thanks for the advice man, really appreciate it
>>
>>69587869
start listening to a lot of music ASAP. step outside of your comfort zone, listen to things that you hate and I promise you soon enough you'll grow to love it if you give it enough time. coming up with melodies and inspiration is sort of a challenge because you have to just listen to everything and allow it some time to get fully absorbed so it starts coming out as your own personal interpretation and feel natural.
>>
>>69587929
will do, thank you anon
>>
>>69587929
tfw best at producing genres i didnt like and shit at what i initially set out to do
>>
>>69586316
The songs I think of sound way better in my head. When I start trying to record and mix it all gets awful. Even if I know exactly what I want where, when I try to fit it in it just doesn't sound good at all
