FLAC actually isn't a meme format unless you're a casual. Mp3's can sound indistinguishable to FLAC, but only if they're encoded properly. FLAC removes the stress of poorly encoded mp3. If you own FLAC, you can re-encode it into any other format and be sure it was done correctly. For a while, some mp3 encoders had a bug that stripped high end. If you owned the FLAC, you could re encode when the bug was fixed. I encode my files differently depending on where I'm storing them, my phone, my hardrive, etc. You can only do that with FLAC.

I've listened to a fair amount of music on a number of formats, and the one I always find to be the best is vbr0. 320k mp3 has effectively the same sound quality, but with more peace of mind from filesize. If there were a high quality vbr format that had some level of redundancy baked in to the file, it would be the best file format. Safe against data loss and as large as is needed.

I doubt I'd be able to hear the difference between vbr0, 320, and those presets. The lame manual says vbr0 is better then either of those presets though! vbr is great imo though.

Amazon Music is an absolute travesty.

I still use it because it comes with my Prime and for some reason it lots plenty of classic British Radio shows.

I pay $5/mo for Spotify and it's more worth it than anything else I pay for on a monthly basis.
