The perfect score MBDTF received pretty much everywhere is an example of my issues with music reviewers in general. The album is not perfect at all, there are bad verses and bad features and the mixing is shit. BUT when the album dropped it certainly felt like a 10 because it met and exceeded every expectation a fan of Kanye's had, it consolidated all the elements from his previous 4 albums (which were very different from one another) and then added a narrative on top. So in that moment it felt perfect. But as time goes on, all of its flaws become more and more apparent, and it becomes clear that all the praise and perfect 10s it received had more to do with the context of the timing than the actual quality of the album, which is my issue with reviewing albums a couples days after its release. Still a solid 7.5 or 8 but in no way is it perfect.

Yeah that ties into the timing and expectations. Here's this guy who has been critically acclaimed for the last 6 years having a near breakdown and a backlash from everyone, and not only does he come back with a good album, but a great one. Like I mentioned, I recognize all of its flaws as time goes on, but man it sure as hell felt perfect when my younger self put the CD in my car for the first time.

I remember reading an article on there a while ago claiming that Public Enemy's Chuck D's lyrics indicated that he was "paranoid"and "lashing out" when Fear of a Black Planet dropped. Like, what the fuck? It's basically one of the closest things to black punk you can find out there. It's anti-establishment. That's kind of the jist of it.

Of course, the article completely misses the context of the album in relation to when it was released. It just sort of dismisses his shit as some sort of kooky spectacle to observe. Don't think I'll be taking their word so seriously anymore.

I don't think songs like this is WHY P4k hates Mars Volta. This is a perfectly acceptable radio rock song, and not as derivative as Muse. Was perfect for the era and the audience.


It's the nu-prog, musical messiah vibes these guys put out that got P4k's goat. They didn't like the wankery and self-righteousness. But they're objectively talented. Cedric's voice is definitely great, especially considering Belmay is deemed a great rock singer.
