You wouldn't call the Beatles a 50s band would you?
Usually the bands who remained relevant in the 80s were the ones like Black Sabbath and Aerosmith that set the trends for that era. Bands that died out were ones like Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Blue Oyster Cult, and Black Oak Arkansas that just weren't unique, innovative, or cool enough to outlast the 70s.
