Opinions?
I always thought it was a really cool sound, especially when I learned it was a fucking metal drum. A bit underused outside of the few select genres it's used in.

p neato but expensive as fuck
Used to play lead a long long time ago. Fun as fuck.
Though looking back, kinda wish I'd gone for DS instead
Yann Tomita/10
Meme instrument
I had no idea this is what made that sound years ago. It's pretty good for melodies, like any percussion instrument that makes notes

I didn't really hear the steel drum while listening to Dopees. Does he have an album more centered in the instrument?
It is the drum of my people. I've had no choice but to hear it played everywhere I went.
Still love it honestly.
the guy in jaco pastorius's big band
great sound when used tastefully
Peacebone by animal collective is what comes to mind.

Sorry for the late reply. Try Astro Age Steel Orchestra
Great instrument. There's steel drum all over Harry Nilsson's Duit On Mon Dei, so check that out

I fucking hate steel drums. I was at an absolute low in my life, living in NYC. I was coming home from my job at a bar at like 3am waiting for the train that comes every hour at that time. The only other person in the station was a performer with a steel drum. He just played the first measure of Under the Sea over and over, really shitty, to no one but me. I legitimately prayed to God that I would be stricken deaf for the rest of my life just so I wouldn't have to hear that anymore. To this day I can't hear steel drums or the little mermaid without getting angry.
