Beginner here. I have been playing for 3 months on an acoustic guitar. But now I have decided to buy an electric guitar. Did some research and I think i will buy a tele. Is Squier standard telecaster good enough? I will buy a fender mustang 1 v2 amp too.
>>
>>69511044
keep in mind thats a modeling amp, and that one is going to need lots of knob tweaking to get something good out of it. i dont know if you want to go through that when youre just starting out.
>>
>>69510354
Maple is not currently more expensive than rosewood though. The difference for guitar manufacturing is that maple has to be sealed first, while rosewood does not, which is where some of the cost difference occurs for the consumer. Guitar manufacturers also bump up the price just a bit more than the sealing process really warrants because consumer has been trained to think that maple is some kind of premium special thing for fretboard material (it isn't).
>>
Are vintage tinted gloss maple fretboards and necks (1 piece) supposed to show finger spots/wear over time? I'm on mobile right now so I can't post a photo, but if you google it you'll see a yellow neck and board. Thanks.
>>
>>69511044
If you want an entry level Tele look at the G&Ls. Better quality.
>>
>>69511044
The Squier telecaster will be fine. If you can bully the salespeople in to doing a set up for you as part of the purchase, even better.

I dunno on beginner amps. It's been a long time since I was last in the market for one.
>>
>>69511248
Given that rosewood is rarer and naturally better suited for use as fretboard material, I'm endlessly amazed that anyone would see maple as anything as a cheap substitute.
>>
>>69511345
Such is the instrument market...

In my opinion, only time you wanna be fussy about what kind of wood your fingerboard is made of is if it is a fretless instrument. Fretless you want something hard like ebony for durability, or a thick finish over whatever wood that performs the same function.
>>
>>69511394
Yeah, and I'm highly skeptical of tonewood arguments about fingerboard material. That's a very good point about fretless instruments, but apart from that it probably makes sense to just pick based on aesthetics.

I've been listening to the grateful dead and decided I should try to learn to improvise like that.

So far I've learned the minor pentatonic over both the bottom string (first fret F shape) and second-from-bottom string (open A shape) barre chord shapes and learned to play songs by playing minor pentatonic over every chord. It's fun, easier than I'd thought it would be.

What is the next scale that's most important, in terms of the chord-scale system of improvisation as applied to rock music in a broad sense rather than strictly jazz? It seems like it could be the major pentatonic but maybe I should just learn the mixolydian instead? Does anybody use the major pentatonic or is there always a better scale that you could use in any given situation?

It doesn't seem like the regular major scale is used that much. Most folk and rock songs seem to use mixolydian more for melody or soloing. Can anybody explain why that is, why they use mixolydian instead of major or ionian?

This is meant as a joke but you really do need special shoes for effective pedaling. I cant wear my boots when I play because the ridges in the sole miss the switch all the time. This is especially bad when looping

Solid flat bottom shoes like adidas stan Smith work best for me.

Check this out for a fingerboard wood comparison on a fretless instrument: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HPAHQXms6_A
Anyway, on my normal fretted basses I have one with an ebony and one with a maple fretboard. Both chosen because of their looks.
The ebony looks good on a natural finish rarewood bass, the maple looks great on a vintage-y P-bass. I couldn't care less about the sound difference they may or may not produce.

Search YouTube for Elite Backing Tracks and then pick one at random and play the arpeggio for each chord as it comes up, first starting from the root and ascending, then starting from the root and descending, then starting at any note in the arpeggio you want to start on and doing whatever you want with it.

Your nut is probably binding a bit. Take a pencil and rub some of the graphite in each slot. This will allow strings to shift more easily forward and back in the slots. If problem persists, take an old string, a wound one of medium gauge like a D string; gently use it to file a bit of material from the sides of each slot to widen them a little. Very small amount here and only side to side. Do not file downwards.

In most cases the graphite alone should be enough.
>>
>>69512805
reminder that playing guitar with a pick is boring and easy
>>
>>69512966
Old strings that are in tune before a bend and instantly out of tune after one are probably not stretching. They're catching on the nut.

The the anon who asked, when you're tuning the guitar and you hear a soft PING sound as you tighten a string, that's the nut. Slot too narrow.

So, I've posted my band in here a couple times and the progress of our album. So we just got a 1st pass back of the 2nd song from the guy who's mixing our recordings. It still has some work to be done, and some lead lines need to cleaned up. But I'm just really excited to show some people.

>>
I should have known better than to post this here.
>>
>>69514206
>he likes to add fuzz to the bass in both songs we've gotten back so far
The sound guy? Or your bassist? Anyway, I can see why you'd do that on the first few bars when it's the bass alone with the drums, it fills out the rest of the frequency spectrum with the fuzz. But once the guitar kicks in the bass is lost in the mix for that portion. You could try EQing the bass differently for that portion, like a more growly mid focused tone. Should serve a similar function without being drowned out when the guitar comes in.
Just a random guys opinion after the first listen though.
Oh and your singer kicks ass.

on guitar i followed that order but I didn't know what to do with the scale without music theory. I think if one should learn an instrument they should first learn some music theory then begin learning the instrument. Then they just learn both at the same time. I feel having knowledge of music theory helps put some of the things your learning as a beginner. That's just me though

This may sound like a noob question, but I was wondering if I could set up my guitar (with a tremolo bar installed into it) so it doesn't go out of tune when I bend my strings. I hardly ever use the tremolo bar, so I just want to know how to set it up so where its not really being used. Do I have to replace the whole thing with a new setup or can I set it where its not being used?

Pic related, sort of
>>
>>69516043
There are a few really easy things you can do; taking out the whammy bar, installing locking tuners, and installing a locking nut being the 3 easiest options.
>>
>>69516043

You can setup a trem to float and stay in tune, like on a strat. It can be difficult if it's a shit trem, or if you have a shitty nut and bad tuning machines

If it is easier, block off your trem (google trem blocking), or set it flush against the body if it is one of those types, and just deal with only lowering pitch with it
>>
>>69516043
>>69516082

Oh I missed the last bit where you said it isn't used much

If it's a floating trem with the trem block accessible behind the guitar, cut a piece of timber to fit snug between the trem block and the body, and jam it in there. That will "block" it
>>

Get a used Schecter.

Don't have cragislist here. I use facebook groups to find cheap gear, even so sometimes reasonably priced gear gets grabbed withing hours due to how dead the market is. When I bought my SG, I contacted the guy selling it like 3 hours after he posted the ad, and he said someone else already talked to him to buy it, good thing the other guy cancelled a couple days later and I got ~50 bucks off for the inconvenience.
>>
>>69516072
>>69516082
>>69516102
thank you dudes, I think this fixes the problem. Are there special pieces that I can buy to block off my trem, or do I have to make my own?
>>
>>69515927

As a guitar player who started on bass: The biggest thing to focus on with that instrument is the groove. Speed is one thing, but as you said you're after consistency, and the most important thing is to keep consistent timing.

Play along with a metronome or a drum track loop and practice playing some kinda groove, then doing quick fills, and returning to the groove, without messing the timing up.

The key to good consistent speed is to be aware at all times what both hands are doing. Sometimes in the past I would be too focused on what one particular hand was doing, when it was the other that was slowing me down
>>
>>69516005

I built a Jazz out of Jap fender parts.

Building a guitar from parts is a much bigger job than it might seem. If you want it to play really well you may still have to take it to a luthier to be done professionally. Stuff like neck angle, neck fit in the pocket, drilling, etc can be quite complex
>>
>>69516114

make your own - it depends on how your axe is set up and where the trem block sits relative to the body timber, so it will be different for every guitar. Set up your guitar the way you like first, then measure the gap, and cut a piece to fit. You might have to plane away one end as it might need to be a wedge shape rather than a block. There is a dude called Chappers on youtube who is a bit of a toss desu but he had a great guide on DIY trem blocking a while ago

I want a Tele because they feel amazing and I want Humbuckers for muh gain. I use pretty high distortion but I don't play metal.
Should I get:

>Fender Standard Tele HH Rosewood Black for £507
(Seems good)

>Fender Custom Tele FMT HH Amber for £719
(Looks a bit metal for me but seems to have the most flexibility in terms of tone BUT I probably will never use all of that potential)

>Fender Classic Deluxe 72 Tele Deluxe Black for £738
(Seems pretty much the same as the first one but it's more expensive so it must be better haha right guys? :^))

Is it really worth going for something even more expensive? I know I regret cheaping out on my first guitar but £700 seems a good place to be

Hi guys

So, i'm a begginer (6 months learning serious) and i have a Yamaha Pacifica 012

I've noticed some notes on my guitar re extremely bad, like if it was nota tunned (but it is), sometimes i play the same string that it's on the tab, but the sound isn't the same. If i play this note again to check, it "kind of sounds the same", but the sound it's ugly.

When i play with another guitar at the same time, both sound the same, but mine is ugly

So, i've been playing electric guitar for some time and now i want a acoustic, to play more calm jams or songs created to be played at acoustics.

I want something with a nice costxbenefit, with a nice sound (but different from the heavy sound i have on a electric), so i've been thinking about:

>Michael Vm925 (Steel strings)
>Strinberg Sj-20 (Steel)
>Eagle Ch-800 (Nylon)
They are in my price range.

I've been considering nylon because my father had a classic Di Giorgio and i really liked to play it in the past. However i feel that Steel strings got more "presence". I'm just worried that a guitar with steel strings will not be so "acoustic" and will not give me a different experience from a electric guitar. (I never played on a steel strings acoustic)

I can't play them to see what i like because i'm planning to buy over the internet and my city has no musical stores (I had to travel to hell when i needed a luthier.)
>>
>>69518330
On a proper set up going from 9 to 10 the tens will buzz without doing a set-up, or at a minimum raising the action.
>>
>>69518349
I love the sound and feel of a nylon string, they're especially great for fingerstyle/classical playing. I get your reservation about presence, though. I don't know about that. Perhaps someone else will.

There's a guy on YouTube called Odi Acoustic who makes various covers on a steel string. One day he lost it and had to use a Nylon string for one video and I honestly thought it sounded a lot better. This was recorded an EQ'd etc though, so he could maybe fix any of the limitations of nylon in post.

Check out any of his covers against the one of "Superheroes" to see the difference

For the love of God don't learn the minor pentatonic scale and solo over blues backing tracks with every other note being a bend. We have enough of those already.

Learn the major scale, learn vocal melodies from songs. Look up a backing track for the sort of style you want to be playing and just go for it. Do shit. Try this, try that. Practice makes perfect. Remember the minor scale is just the major scale starting on the third note. Follow the chords.

Aim for a "guide tone" you want to hit over a specific chord, and lead into those.

I noticed my action is too high with the 1st fret capo trick. Never touched my truss rod but thought about giving it a quarter of a twist
>>
>>69519885
Start with an eighth and tweak it if it needs more.
>>
>>69516520
You need to adjust the intonation. Look up youtube tutorial on how to do it. It is easy to do.
>>
Bought a used guitar and the first string keeps popping out. Tried to make the cut in the nut deeper but I feel like I might make it worse, any tips?
>>
>>69518904
Sure. Being able to play piano is very useful.
>>
>>69519949
Man I'm actually scared to damage my neck.
I don't have a feeler gauge to accurately measure the string height but when depressed at the 1st and 17th fret there's enough space between the 7th fret and the string to slide 2 or 3 business cards. I think it may be too much
>>
>>69519991
>any tips?
Yeah, the tip of my cock.
>>
>>69519991
install a new nut maybe?
>>
>>69519885
I just my own truss rods

I don't know if this safe thing to do but when I'm adjusting my truss rod I usually grab my guitar by the body and pull the neck back to see how much slack it gives then I that a a guide to adjust it

Keep in mind that I've only done this on bolt on necks and I have no idea if it's safe to do
>>

>>
>>69520054
One card should be perfect, just go slow, first slack all the strings before ever twisting the rod and re-tune as you go. Not all necks can get that low, because of fret defects, ect., your mileage may vary.
>>
>>69520130
>I already have a pick though
Is that what you're calling your boipussy these days? Seriously, let me give you a tip for real.

"accessiblity" might have been a poor word choice. What I meant is just that the small angle there is may get more in the way than if it was flush with the body
it's a minor inconvenience in any case, not as huge of an issue as regular heels.

he's been using dimarzios since whenever he got the TAM and he's more recently been using Seymour Duncans and trying out some Fishman Fluence

>>69520995
>>69521031
To be honest, active guitar pickups serve absolutely no point when you can just buy a boost pedal or an OD and get the same kind of result with none of the disadvantages.
Active preamps are where things get interesting, but they're as common as a self taught guitarist knowing theory.
>>
tfw been playing for about 2 years and still am not very good because im shit at practicing

granted the first year was solely learning heavily chord based stuff on acoustic

>>
>>69521128
lol. I'll take that as a "yes" then, thanks.
>>
>>69521105
practicing is a matter of focusing and finding ways to still entertain yourself.
use a metronome and hum the notes when practicing scales, even if you're humming like shit, if the tone matches, you're forcing your brain to "conceive the notes" and not just see it as a box on the fretboard.
practice in also various ways, let's say you're practicing the harmonic minor scale in A, then you can try keeping the same notes but instead starting from another degree of the scale. Play it in thirds instead of seconds. Play it going back and forth from the root on a lower octave and the different degrees of the scale, etc.
Good practice is practice you've focused on, where you've paid attention to what you've been doing, and come out with more knowledge.
Sure you can grind away scales for hours and hours until they're set in stone as a set of motion, but that's only going to train your muscles, not your musicality or creativity.
>>
>>69520899
why would they be?
if that's the sound you want then they're the way to get it

They reissue really cool stuff but they completely jew out on how they build them. They are not cheap instruments for what you get, usually the hardware/pickups are absolute bottom of the barrel generic bin stuff. Like that tremolo on this thing, its like something you get on a $300 Squier , but this guitar is $800. They do that with all the parts and hardware.

That sidejack is 500, you would be getting a far better deal going up to a Hallmark mosrite who faithfully reproduce all the little things that make mosrites special with the authentic tremolo, pickups, zero fret, they are 300 more but still well worth it.

Eastwoods are a ripoff
