The Internet killed subcultures though. With social media platforms like tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest etc people are able to be influenced and take from past subcultures without fully knowing or appreciating them ie. soft grunge, health goth. Actual cultural appropriation.

It sucks desu. I started noticing this during the late 2000s where I noticed regardless of the show I was at: indie, hardcore, metal: few kids dressed the same as the genre culture. Dad haircuts and flannel everywhere.

I think people tend romanticize the past musical scenes thanks to the journalists and the people who create documentaries about it.

When I first saw docos like american hardcore, I thought it was cool af, they lived like they belonged to a gang. But when I went to my first punk/metal shows, I was a little disappointed, it wasn't different from people just going to see a movie at the theatre.
The most dedicated people I met are just consumers, they buy loads of vinyls, go to concerts several times a week, etc.

Instead of giving everyone one of two or three "subcultures" to choose from, the music industry is just trying to make every artist appeal to everyone. People are too eclectic (or so they think) and have too much access to everything. Everyone in punk, metal, indie, pop and increasingly hip hop dresses and acts the same way. In fact, in all of these genres being "normal" is now considered a rebellion against old cliches. This is especially true in metal.

I've actually thought this for a long time but I think it's fucking amazing. I see all sorts of weird people on my college campus, people dressed like greasers, hippies, old school punks, grunge people, all sorts of shit and usually some mix of everything. It's amazing. You're free to be basically what ever you want and everyone's so weird and fucked no one can say anything. There's like 40% of the population that still wants to conform to a "norm" and those are the people you see wearing OBEY and Supreme shit, watching shit like FausyTUBE and SoFlo, listening to the worst pop imaginable, that's where wrong generation people get the idea there's "no culture" when in reality the internet has given us access to all cultures across all times. In terms of mass impact, rappers are the new rockstars and "meme rap" I'd the new alternative. But I literally don't care because those aren't genres I care about, and thanks to the Internet any genre I do care about can thrive in the underground because everyone has easy access to them (post-hardcore, garage punk, lo-fi goth).
I find that the older I get, the less time I spend trying to be open-minded and considering what people mainstream or underground are praising. Music is becoming very functional for me - most of the time if I feel like hearing something fresh, it's gonna be garage punk or post-hardcore. If I want something more ambitious/grandiose, I just go to bop/post-bop era jazz, 'cuz I'm still enough of a jazz pleb that there's a lot to explore. I do like Chinese classical, baroque, and soul music, and I'm happy when they're on, but I'm not invested in them enough to keep actively exploring them much. Growing up I really liked industrial music, but now must of it feels kinda tacky to me. If I'm at a nightclub I usually hope for drum n bass because it's less annoying than other EDM genres.

But yeah, the answer is meme rap, but with the Internet you can totally insulate yourself and only pay attention to your little niche.
