Why would you assume it's them? They also have Babymetal, I don't think they are controlling anyone's music. Pretty sure all they do is distribute.

I'm into Shoegaze/ Noise/ Breakbeat/ etc so I'll share some bands/tracks:

Though not quite Japanese, it does feature a Japanese vocalist: Asobi Seksu, they're pretty nice and comfy. The following track is from their most popular album, "Citrus": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJNsKqm1Xqc

Often categorized as Shoegaze, Japanese band Luminous Orange has flirted with other genres. Though not a decent exemplifier of their overall sound, the following track is quality shit, or so I think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMReqebo5l4

>Favourite new releases?
Kinoko Teikoku released a new album some weeks ago -and I <3 it-, Ai no Yukue, you can listen to its first (?) single here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DskrX3suqb0 and get a taste of the entire album here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4flEcXvYgjQ

Even though their Shoegaze-y tracks are often below average, Boris has delivered some good stuff when collaborating with Merzbow, here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlcfEtBpvFM
They released a new collaborative album some months ago, Gensho. Read the description first: https://borismerzbow.bandcamp.com/ They also released a split with Asobi Seksu some years ago: https://boris.bandcamp.com/album/asobi-seksu-x-boris-split-7

Also, did you know Merzbow is not the only Noise-producing artist in the world? Well, I didn't, at least for some days until I did some basic research... Here's "Frog Girl 9000" from 2 by Hanatarash: https://youtu.be/DSCrR68BxYY?t=178

Hopefully the name will ring some bell because I love him and you should too: Osamu Sato. He's back, not only as a visual artist* but also as a musician; he's confirmed a new album is coming out next year and I'm legitimately excited, a portion of his art is still lost media but, luckily, we have most of his music online -and approved by Sato himself!-: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4wpaoC35Vg

it really is astounding at how much shoegaze has come out of japan for a genre which died in the UK in the early 90s
>>
>>69453773
As far as I'm concerned, both Ride and slowdive will release new material next year. Lush reunited last year and released a new EP. my bloody valentine released m b v some years ago. I would've called it dead 3 years ago, not anymore, though I get your point.
>>
>>69454009
Oops, forgot that my bloody valentine is Irish, my point still stands.
>>
>>69454009
I get that but those are established bands from the beginning that's like me calling grunge not dead because 3 out of the big 4 in that genre released a album in the last few years.
>>
>>69454211
But them releasing albums is bound to revive the scene in the country, or so I'd assume, I can't say for sure, really, as I'm not familiar with the Shoegaze scene on the UK, maybe I'll try asking on /shugazi/.

>>
>>69460864
My bad.

But do you know what NARASAKI is working on at the moment?
>>
>>69453773
Even though Shoegaze was born in the UK, I personally think the greatest shoegaze artists are Japanese. I think many others would probably share this opinion.
>>
>>69461009
no clue, in fact I'm surprised you know that name considering you made such a newfag error

even the hardcore fans don't know that name. the only reason I know that name is because of Babymetal, maybe you can school me on him
>>
>>69461105
To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of Babymetal, which is why I made that mistake; I don't really care.
My only interest in it is NARASAKI.

He's the lead vocalist/ guitarist and creative force behind Coaltar of the Deepers, regarded by many to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Japanese Shoegaze band. You've probably heard of them, and if you haven't, you really owe it to yourself to check them out.

COTD haven't broken up, but they also haven't produced anything new for about 4 years now, and they haven't played any gigs for a few years either. But NARASAKI is a pretty big deal behind the scenes of Japan's music industry. He was one of the original masterminds of Momoclo (which is why they're much better then they have any right to be) and also Babymetal.

Basically, he's responsible for idolshit and jpop in general trying out new things and new directions. For better or worse, he's preventing stagnation in Japan's mainstream music by trying out new things. Love or hate Babymetal, at least it's something new for idol music.

If you've listened to Momoclo, and find yourself liking some of their songs for no good reason, he'll be the one who wrote and arranged those songs.
>>
>>69461237
I like some of momoclo but not most of it

Other people who work on babymetal; takeshi ueda from mad capsule markets (most notably their biggest hit gimme chocolate), leda (famous guitarist from deluhi, also performed in kami band for a while and at tokyo dome), and the most prominent, yuyoyuppe (famous vocaloid producer and head of megitsune, hedobangyaa!!! + more).

I'll look into COTD when I get the chance.

>>
>>69461285
I like yuyoyuppe's vocaloid stuff, but not really a fan of his Babymetal work. My problem with yuyoyuppe (and I'm stealing this opinion from a big Japanese music reviewer) is that he lacks the 'live music' experience, and it really shows in his work. People like NARASAKI and Ieda have played the underground circuits when they were younger and have a greater appreciation of 'loud sound'.
On the other hand, yuyoyuppe's 'loud sound' is kind of naive, as his music experience comes from behind a computer.

It was something I couldn't put my finger on for years, something that bothered me about yuyoyuppe.
>>
>>69461363
A lot of people say they vastly prefer the live versions of his songs because of this actually, and Babymetal have released a ton of live material including just the other day for their Wembley Arena concert.

Personally, I don't see the problem. Hedobangya!!!! is probably my favorite song of theirs and Megitsune is considered the best by fans but i think it's overrated.

He also made a remix of Hedobangya!!! that they only performed at 2 different concert, one of which being my all time favorite performance of theirs, but more his style, completely EDM-ish.
>>
>>69461416
Yeah I was at their Wembley Arena show, and despite not being a huge fan, it was a very entertaining show.

And Headobangya!! is one of NARASAKI's.

My favourite of theirs is Catch Me If You Can, which is also written and arranged by NARASAKI.

>>
>>69461948

Catch Me If You Can sounds like it came straight off of their Penguin EP.

>>
What style of Japanese traditional music is this?

https://youtu.be/hpDvtIt6Lsc
https://youtu.be/fyk6wEA4AEw
>>
>>69461991
I don't think Kaneda's Theme is Japanese traditional music. It's probably based off of some kind of sub-saharan African music, or generic 'World Music'.

I could be completely wrong though, it's just I've never heard traditional Japanese music that sounds like that.
>>
>>69462023
What about the second one?
>>
>>69462254
Well considering the stage is set in Bali, it's probably meant to sound like music from Bali, which is in Indonesia in case you didn't know.

To be honest, it just sounds like generic 'jungle tribal music'. It definitely has similarities to traditional Hawaiian music, which I expect would have been the main influence, since a lot of Japan's exposure to traditional island tribal culture is through Hawaii.

>>69461978
For sure famo. I'll definitely look into it by the end of the day. It's kind of funny how much of their music can be traced back to other music. For example, cmiyc has the amen break. Onedari Daisakusen has a riff from My Generation as well as a sampling of Fred Durst saying "Fly!". 4 No Uta has a riff from Master of Puppets. No Rain No Rainbow is straight out of X Japan. Megitsune has the melody from Sakura Sakura during the breakdown. They even do this with the theatrics, parodying E.T., Batman, and Star Wars.

It comes dangerously close to being a hack, but I think Koba(the mastermind who created it all) is just really good at taking ideas and putting them together and it's done in a respectable way as to pay homage.

Yea, Endless Rain. Also supposedly Akatsuki is a tribute to Kurenai but I only hear it in small parts. The guy who made Babymetal is a huge X Japan fan. He pays homage to them in various ways. Yoshiki has met them a few times and attended one of their shows in 2014 in London and said multiple times he wants to collaborate one day. He is also in the process of making his own Babymetal, called Lady's X.
>>
>>69463037
Huh, I'll be interested in hearing how Lady's X turns out. Hopefully it'll be it's own thing, rather than just another Babymetal.

Casting call is for young girls, like 12-18 who can sing/play instruments. So they have the "play their own instruments" part going for them. I think the only thing he's copying is just young girls and heavy music. I doubt it will be that similar but I'm sure he got the idea from BM. BM is pretty much making girls + metal a thing in Japan. I think that's pretty cool. Funny thing is I think we're gonna see a lot of non-manufactured bands spring up in the future inspired by them.

japanese vocals make me cringe (e.g. Boris), i just can't stand it

this is the only band that has singing that i can listen to

can someone help me with this? japan has a lot of talent and i feel i'm missing out

To be honest, that;s your problem.

Japanese is one of the few languages that sound good to sing in.

Along with English and Italian, Japanese works really well for vocals.

Unlike Chinese or French which sounds fucking terrible when sung.

That track by Jesse Ruins was pretty nice; I found their Bandcamp, which album should I check first?
Also, pigeons on thumbnail force me into linking some Sato: https://youtu.be/AHwvZbxTvWw?t=745
Daoko seems nice too, catchy. I've heard her sound shifted at some point, being "less generic" before, not like I care much, really, I like music.

Some languages are better than others when it comes to singing, plain and simple.

Languages like English and Japanese are very flexible when it comes to intonation, therefore a singer can play around with stresses and vowel-sound intonation when singing, allowing them to be more expressive and gives greater melodic freedom.

Languages like Chinese are very intonation heavy, where different tones can change the meaning of a word, therefore singing in this language is more restrictive as you cannot be as expressive with intonation or melodies.
French has a similar problem, where you cannot deviate much from specific vowel and nasal sounds, which is restricting music-wise.

This is not a controversial opinion by any means, and is common knowledge when studying multilingual oral theory in music.

You actually seem to know what you're talking about.
How about German, Spanish, Scandinavian and Slavic languages?
>>
>>69467886
German, as most people are aware, is a very harsh language, and despite it being not particularly restrictive tonally, the harshness tends to come across quite strongly in the consonants, so it's not great.

Spanish, like Italian, is pretty good. In many ways it's similar to Latin, which is the gold standard in singing languages, simply because we don't really know what it sounded like, so people effectively have complete freedom when it comes to singing in Latin. One of the problems in Spanish though is the heavy 'lispy' sound you get in their 'c's, which is a very common letter. This can be quite intrusive to non-Spanish listeners. Interestingly you don't really have this problem with Latin-American Spanish.

Scandinavian, admittedly, I don't know much about. But Swedish is very specific intonation-wise, and kind of has it's own music rhythm to it when you speak it, which I imagine might be a bit of an issue when singing in it.

Slavic languages like Polish or Russian, I think, are beautiful languages to sing in. They're very expressive languages already and therefore people singing in these languages have a huge range to express themselves with. But not everyone agrees; some people find Slavic a bit too guttural (sounds produced around the back of the throat) or twangy. But as I said, I personally think it's a great language for singing powerful, emotional vocals.

>where different tones can change the meaning of a word
How is this not cool? Wordplays are nice, at least to me, see this* as an example, look the lyrics up for further understanding.
http://dangerousminds.net/comments/les_sucettes_the_most_ridiculously_phallic_music_video_of_1966
It's OK if you only like certain languages and their ins and outs because of how they appeal to your literary sensibilities but, being so unnecesarily condescending about supposed fact makes me feel like "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is your favourite book.

You're entirely missing the point. It has nothing to do with wordplay. I'm not arguing about whether it's 'cool' or not (an entirely redundant argument anyway, but whatever), but rather about the creative freedom that a language gives you when it comes to singing.

Let's illustrate it with an (admittedly outdated) analogy.

Vine limits videos to a few seconds. As a result, people came up with creative and interesting ways to create entertaining content with its own worth. But Vine is very restrictive, and if that was the only medium to create videos through, then we would be heavily restricted creatively.
French or Chinese is like Vine.

But I get the feeling you're not really arguing against the pros and cons of different languages when it comes to singing, but rather are just attempting to defend the French language.

But objectively, French is a worse language than English when it comes to the amount of freedom you have in expressing melodies through variations in tone. This is fact; simply study articulatory phonetics.

I agree with you there. German is really good for certain genres. It just lacks the versatility of other languages.
>>
>>69461066
I agree. The Japanese just get it, they know how to do shoegaze well, and perhaps even better than anyone else and even its inventors. I'd easily put My Dead Girlfriend and Kinoko Teikoku up there with Slowdive and MBV without hesitation. They're just that good.

To me it seems it's like that with every genre the Japanese decide to touch. It's probably just confirmation bias on my part, but fuck me do they have a talent for good and interesting music. They just take a genre, and they take it to the next logical level.
>>
>>69467518
>>69468206
I dunno if I'd put English on the same level as Japanese and Italian (and French really) when it comes to versatility in singing.
It's just the language that became the "standard."

Also it's bullshit that German is a harsh language! It's really not, and there's very good soft German music!
>>

Boredoms is the greatest band ever in japan. Super Ae, Pop Tatari, Chocolate Synthethizer are top 10 easily, Vision Creation Newsun is good also. At a technical objective level no one competes just game over here these guys are the GOAT.

Boris second greatest band please listen to that seeping At Last Feedbacker it's haunting and foggy. a sad album, they are also more popular in the west

Shiina Riingo one of the most famous jpop singer, kalk samen is an avant pop craze kinda of industrial and claustrophobic art pop ala Bjork in Vespertine but darker and more experimental and sad, top 5 for sure

Fishmans chillest band of all time, they are like japanese happy Radiohead, mostly underground but they also had some hits in the mid 90s onwards, their live album is top 5 of all time you'll cry a lot unless you do no longer have a soul

Flipper's Guitar is like the equivalent of The Beatles of Japan except 30 years later, single handedly changed pop music. mostly underground until massive hit in young alive in love which even played at a super popular drama at the time and is one of the most recognizable pop songs to this day, top 5

Pizzicato Five gods of shibuya kei, sounds kinda like yo la tengo. was the biggest cult band overseas around the time of happy end of the world even bigger than boredoms

The list goes on
