It's the beginning of capitalism season!

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

John Coltrane - Crescent (April 27, 1964 - June 1, 1964)

Very full and imagined feeling in execution, albeit with a few kinks left in the design phase. Coltrane is treading new water on this album; while still operating in the bop stratum, glimpses of avantgarde and spiritual directions frequently reveal themselves. The instrumentation, particularly the rhythm section, feel more loose and free than previous recordings with this quartet. Artists have a little more reign to explore individual ideas, particularly Tyner, who battles with Coltrane for the focal point throughout the album. Jones’ drumming is both exciting and complimentary to the set, a welcome upgrade in individuality from ‘Coltrane’ and ‘Ballads’, which rang a little more traditional and mechanical.

The compositions and structure leave a little to be desired. Much like his eponymous 1962 album, the opposing styles clash more than compliment, leaving the album with disjointed, ununified feeling. If the target was a melting pot of ideas, in practice it more closely resembles a salad. Fortunately, while every bite has distinct layers of flavour, it’s still a good salad.

While an obvious developmental step forward, it remains limited in it’s insistence on modal structure and strong blues roots. His foray into a more free and expressive direction is a slow climb of rejecting preconceived notions while still creating a tangible product. While tangible, this specific snapshot in time of a continually morphing artistic direction fails to allow enough personality and emotion to permeate through to the listener for it to be truly great.

>Jandek - Austin Sunday

Rep gets bored of Youngs and Nielsen. Decides to invite 2 drummers (lecavemanface.jpeg) and a different bassist to the gig.

The guitar doesn’t have the cutting tone from the first show and is more murky. He does bring out cool episodes out of it (stumble-like stab grooves on “Wine You Devil” and occasions where he sets the rhythm of the piece are my favorite). The guitar in general reminds me more of how he handled the bass on several albums. Just seems heavier on the lower note plucks.

The howling is closer to the first “I Threw You Away” era records and just sounds like spoken word full of pain. Incidentally, the opening track is titled “Throw Me Away” and begins a set of self-critical reflection pieces from Mr. Smith in the classic Jandek repertoire.

The key "battle" on here is between the two drummers though. They do their best not to go into a free improv frenzy but rather try to play extremely sparse solos. On my first listen I honestly didn’t even notice that there are two drummers playing but thought it was just one really good jazz drummer. Upon the second listen it was much more interesting to see that two drummers were able to achieve a sort of an equilibrium of rhythmical support for the rep.

I’d say that the venture with the new crew was a success. I liked it, but could have profited from the Rep himself doing something out of the ordinary.

Hey /daily/, week was long and tiring but there was some new music, so that's pretty cool.

>Burial - Young Death / Nightmarket

Honestly? This was extremely underwhelming.

Yes I understand he is going for a more ambient approach. The problem is he is using the same exact synth preset he had on Rival Dealer and the trick where he "communicates" using sampled voices is overdone to the point of being unbearable on here. Both of the tracks just seem to be completely empty and feel like some WIP material. Very mediocre, especially after Rival Dealer that I loved.

5-/10

>The Rolling Stones - Blue and Lonesome

Love it. I love when Stones get bluesy and that is basically all they do on this record. Couple of moments where Richards' bends were a bit clumsy here and there but the biggest (and probably the only major) offender on this record is how badly the piano is mixed within the recording. If you take this and put it next to the Billy Preston era recordings, you'll understand what I mean.

Otherwise I love this. Gonna be listening to this more this week.

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - Strangers From The Universe

This band executes a set of sounds that sound manic at some points and slick and psychedelic at others. Guitar riffs can be harsh and abrupt in many moments but become smooth very quickly. The shorter tracks appear as amalgamations of improv, ambience, and field recording. All of this comes together in a very entertaining album from start to finish.

The vocals explore a wide range of styles, and it reminds me a bit of Ween, just not to that level of exploration. Along with the experimentation in guitar performance, the vocals make every song feel very fresh. I wasn't sure what to expect going into this album, and that feeling never let up. The opener sound like a irreverent Talking Heads, while some of my favorite tracks like Guillotine and Cup of Dreams contain tinges of post-rock. The band retains this element of surprise while maintaining cohesion as well, something that many similar eclectic bands fail to do.

I will say that I did not enjoy a few tracks on here. I found February to pretty irritating, and Socket and The Piston and the Shaft to a be a bit overlong. But as the whole, the album uses it's time incredibly well and never fails to make the listener think about the array of sounds the band throws together. I adore My Pal The Tortoise, Guillotine, Cup of Dreams, and Noble Experiment. Very, very nice album.

GOOD. (almost incredible if it weren't for a few annoying moments.)

>Zeal and Ardor - Devil Is Fine
Black metal. Heh. Get it? Spirituals and metal fusion. It works. The metal isn't quite as brvtal as I'd prefer, and it feels a bit like a jumbled mess of good ideas. However, it definitely earns points for unique style and mood. Interesting stuff. If this group refined their sound and songwriting, it could be phenomenal. Also, random trap beat interludes. That was an odd choice. 6/10.

Doing 2016 albums all month so I can fill out a good selection for AOTY. Gimme stuff to listen to.

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme (December 9, 1964)

In A Love Supreme, Coltrane’s quartet reconciles past ideas and notions and amalgamates all the best parts of his artistic development into one of the greatest statements in jazz history. Coltrane’s most unique and exciting pieces have always been longer suite style songs (à la Ole, Lush Life, India, Africa) allowing himself and the band to fully explore the songs to their maximum extent. In this album, time stands still; while effectively one 33 minute ever-changing song, sot a single second is squandered.

Far and away his most emotive release up to this point, Coltrane uses his saxophone as an extension of his soul. The compositions here are absolutely stunning and flow beautifully between ideas. Solos and artistic tangents are encouraged but never overstay their welcome. Musicians compliment each other phenominally, and never appear to veer off course despite a very loose, free, and sometimes chaotic landscape. Coltrane’s use of overblowing is ramped up to the extreme, invoking intense emotion and passion which is followed suit by the rest of the band

There is so much energy poured into this album that it’s hard not to get emotional listening to it. Coltrane bundles up the human experience, transcends it into a musical statement and delivers it straight to God.

Lee Morgan tears shit up as always but he’s particularly powerful on this one, ripping through rapid-fire solos like it’s nothing. Shorter isn’t too far behind either, adding some dope solos all throughout this thing. And of course Blakey is killer on the drums. He’s one of the few drummers I actually like hearing solo because he’s entertaining, powerful and concise. A lot of jazz drummers fuck around for a few minutes and bore me on their solos but Blakey always manages to entertain for some reason. Anyway, this whole album is tight as hell and while it isn’t the best from the Jazz Messengers, it’s still really fucking good. Reminds me to listen to more of their material.

8/10

>Valium Aggelein - Hier Kommt der Schwartze Mond

One of the comfiest albums I’ve had the pleasure of listening to. This is slowcore at one of its finest moments, just chugging along and rocking me to sleep. Everything on here drifts along lethargically in the form of 5-6 minute tracks. There’s the classic echo-driven shoegaze-y guitar and methodical drumming but what sets this release apart is the use of the keyboard and xylophone (at least I think that’s what it is). Both instruments are used subtly and sparingly but they add a nice twinkle to these dreamy tracks. Nothing really happens on this album but the atmosphere is impeccable and incredibly soothing. This might be on the same level as Stratosphere, it’s simply magical.

9/10

Trip gets his first official victory and moves on to the next round.

This is actually bretty gud funk worship. I didn't think I would be able to listen to a Gambino album all the way through.
That being said, I probably won't return to it much and it's nothing mind-blowing.
On the topic of Donald Glover, did anyone here watch Atlanta? I enjoyed that quite a bit.

Fabrizio De André - La buona novella (1970)
>singer/songwriter, chamber folk, canzone d'autore

This album's greatest strength is how wonderful the sparse, understated moments are, and how the more active tracks still feel understated because of the subtle melodies and the lack of any real bombast. Well, besides the choral/hymn tracks, which really disappointed me. I was drawn to this album because of the influence from these genres, but the bookending choral tracks seem really shoehorned in and ill-fitting, mainly because of how obviously they contrast with the rest of the album. The rest is pretty great though. Comparisons to Cohen are certainly valid, the vocals and the general mood are very similar, and it's pretty damn nice. Definitely wanna check more of this guy out.

>Ella Fitzgerald - Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas
>Christmas Music, Vocal Jazz

I much prefer this over the Bing Crosby release yesterday. Ella's voice lets her do faster paced songs with a lot more energy and passion than Crosby, and her ability to pour more emotion into it means that the slower ballads that I generally dislike in 50s vocal jazz aren't a total chore to slog through. And because Ella's voice is so good, this album is pretty much start to finish Christmas classics (bar the somewhat awkward Good Morning Blues) - though, do note that this is still pretty standard vocal jazz, so the backing music doesn't have a quarter of the personality the vocalist possesses.

The thirty-three minute runtime makes sure this release doesn't totally overstay its welcome either, so if you're in the mood to listen to something Christmas-y already, this is worth checking out.

Childish Gambino - Awaken, My Love! (2016)
>psychedelic soul, neo-soul, funk

I went from hating Gambino, to liking him based on the strength of this album's singles, all the way to appreciating his musical ability and ambition while realizing that he has absolutely no clue how to make new, inventive music or sequence an album properly. The first half or so has some good moments, the /wonderful/ "Me and Your Mama" and the heavy "Riot" being major highlights, but not only is it /massively/ derivative of Partliament/Funkadelic to the point of being a straight-up rip-off, the rest of the songs are pretty terrible. Irritating voice filters are used way too much and every track just goes on for far too long. They're all brimming with ideas but Gambino can't condense these ideas into a digestable track that doesn't come off as irritating. The Prince-influenced "Redbone" starts off the more concise, poppy second half, and it promises something better than the scattershot first half, but the god-awful "California" comes in and ruins everything, and it never really picks up after it. I can now recognize Gambino as being a talented musician, if "Me and Your Mama", "Riot", and "Redbone" have anything to say about this, but every single other track on this album ranges from totally unoriginal and derivative to flat-out terrible. I'll be waiting for him to hone his craft and make a truly good album.

Wayne Shorter - Juju (1965)
>modal jazz

Goes down very light, almost to the point of seeming sterile and emotionless, but it's lively enough and has enough memorable melodies to be a thoroughly enjoyable album. Shorter obviously carries the album. Tyner, Jones, and Workman are great as always (and what a fucking lineup), but Shorter's sax playing anchors every single piece while still standing out as a focal point even when there are no solos involved, which mainly has to do with its lovely melodic tendencies. Regarding solos, they're consistently the weakest element here. Despite being a drummer and loving drumming (especially Elvin Jones' drumming), I don't like drum solos, and the drum solos here often break-up the tightness of the band. Nonetheless, a damn fine jazz album, and a very worthy addition to Blue Note's catalog.

Nick Drake - Pink Moon (thomas), 8-
An incredible guitar performance, the whole mood is very sincere and therefore kinda heavy. It feels almost borderline depressing for melancholy and even though it's short, it leaves some sense of dragging lengthy inertia.

Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock & Jack DeJohnette - Changeless (s), 8-
A warm intriguing record with great sync between the musicians, a productive reflection.

Wire - Pink Flag (Darklands), 7~
Didn't know Wire could be downright punk like this. Sounds good enough to me.

Ye, it's great, has an amazing energy, I definitely enjoy the instruments on this thing. And ah, repetitiveness, I kinda like it.

>Frank Zappa - Lumpy Gravy

A thirty minute musical-sounding album interspersed with various spoken word, musique concrete and instrumental vignettes. I'd be lying if I said that I was completely on board with whatever left-field direction this project took me too. However, after listening I can comfortable say that listening to this album was a positive experience. The best parts of this album are the spontaneous pop and rock ditties that were bridged by gratuitous but well executed studio fuckery.

This also wouldn't be as good if it went on for longer than it did. It was short and sweet. It lumbered in, said whatever gibberish it wanted to say, then sauntered off with a heavy swagger; never overstaying it's welcome.

Neither of those albums really stuck with me during, or after my listen-through. Freak Out did surprise me on how lackluster it was.

Don't get me wrong, I loved it's concept. I adored how it satirized almost every type of popular music in the 60's with a nihilistic and political edge. It was an ambitious goal, especially for a debut album.

The execution, however, was poor. Rather than honing in on their own ideas, the Mothers just presented their own basic, zany replica of whatever pop/rock song they were making fun of. The experimental descent into madness at the end was great, but it couldn't save the other 90 percent of the album.

Oh boy oh gee, I found a new 10... be mad at me because it's the first Sonic Youth album very good start also

Sonic Youth - Sonic Youth
So I've always been a sucker for that no-wavy jangly guitar wank that came out of late early 80s New Yahk, it should make some modicum of sense why I should think so highly of this whereas others would find it completely average, or worse, B A D... I've always like the discordant bits in Unwound or Slint's discography, this is an album filled with such discordance start to finish.
It's got an absolutely perfect structure, five songs, little under 25 minutes, never outstaying itself or underselling itself
This is just a bunch a kids writing music for their buds, and that's what I can appreciate the shit out of with this...

Godspeed - Asunder! Sweet and other distress
it's refreshing to revisit Gods Pee Poo Black Emperor after becoming acquainted with some of music's more highbrow movements (minimalism for one) and having it still hold up
will they ever make another F#A#.... No
Will they have a good go of it... absolutely

Zounds - Curse of Zounds
pretty good, fucken long, but very good
esp liked that one track where he says maybe its him that is the problom because the whole world is against him

Moon Runes - Moonrunes goes third
Good, angery as usual, not as good as Russian Field of Experiments but it deserves the same score so eh...

Death In June - Thunder Perfect Mind
A slightly above the board Dark Ambient record
>>
So, I've finally "finished" my project. Finished is amidst quotation marks because it's still expanding, and it's supposed to become much bigger.

What is it? Well, I decided to release some music, but I felt that just putting it on a bandcamp wasn't enough, I wanted a background, I wanted to give my music a meaning, a purpose.

I'm not going to spoil you anything because in my opinion (and as others have stated) it's better if you know nothing about it before starting,

All the tracks are on a single bandcamp page because I couldn't find a better way to sort them but listen them when you're find the respective link.

It'd be very great to have some feedback about it (and maybe your personal interpretations about it <3 )

ty for your attenction.
