It's one of the most image-focused genres of music to date, not too surprising that also makes it one of the least creative. There are some great musicians in the field for sure but the vast majority are just people cashing in on something easy as fuck (In terms of writing, calm the fuck down hypothetical person about to whine about how hard rapping actually is).
>>
>>69402562
Why do black metal dudes make anti christian songs only?

Why do pop singers sing about relationships only?

Why do shitty Dutch DJ's make tracks about partying hard only?

Why do ''special snowflakes'' with self-diagnosed mental illnesses create edgy music to express their condition?

No idea です. I've been trying to honestly understand rap / hip hop for years. I always thought there was something wrong with me, because people make such a huge deal of rap. Case in point: I've listened to Starboy this week, like everyone else. Man, WTF. The guy literally mentions every car he owns and brags about everything for 3 minutes, then end. So shallow, so pointless. Maybe I don't "get it" because I'm not American?
>>
>>69402757
Who are the most creative rappers right now? Travis Scott was hyped up for me and I liked Rodeo but mostly cause of the production. his lyricism really disappointed me
>>
>>69402790
This
>>
>>69402801
I'm an American and I don't get it.
>>
>>69402801
No, everyone is as confused as you. People just pretend not to be because they think they'll look racist if they don't. Rap is one giant case of the emperor having no clothes.
>>
>>69402817
Not the most creative but definitely the most influential is Gucci Mane, there really isn't any denying that
>>
>rapper spits about how he is profiled and people automatically assume he steals and sells drugs because he's black
>same rapper spits about stealing and selling drugs
>sometimes on the same track
>>
>>69402935
this!!!
>>
I guess its what people want to hear
>>
>>69402674
DOOM's got a good amount of songs about sex and drugs (weed). it's always done in a lighthearted and funny way though, so you don't really think about it.
>>
Bc lyrics are fuckin dumb and for fags
>>
>>69402920
somewhat related, i always think it's hilarious when the feature verse has barely anything to do with the main rappers verse. jay z on monster is probably the most infamous example of this.
>>
>>69402817
Travis Scott sucks
>>
Rap is typically about bravado.
Why does it surprise you that they tend to rap about things which make people feel empowered like money and sex?
>>
>>69402605
Kendrick lamar
>>
>>69403048
it panders to faux-depressed indie kids because they can sort of relate, which they can't with most hip hop. the lyrics don't even have to be well written, just call it "stream-of-consciousness" and they'll eat it up.
>>
>>69403048
Nice false dichotomy
>>
>>69403048
Not an argument.
>>
>>69403066
It's also usually extroverted music. What I mean by that is that rap is rarely introspective and often comes off as awkward sounding when it is. Not all the time though. IMO a lot of the best rappers are very introspective but they do it through story telling and by describing their actions you get a sense for how they feel and think.
>>
>>69403010
Or Jay-Z on Diamonds from Sierra Leone

also in response to this thread, MF Doom, Lauryn Hill and Andre 3000 are the only rappers I know of off the top of my head who don't perpetuate negative stereotypes about rappers
>>

It's always the same shit. Money, girls, weed, big dick, big titties, tight pussies, money, girls, weed, cars, beating people up.
If writing songs trying to prove how much better you are than everyone else isn't insecure as FUCK I honest to God don't know what is.

When people say they don't like rap it's more about the content than racism.

OP have you ever listened to Serengeti? He basically crafts tons of little stories about the minutiae of life.. dudes got a lot of little yarns spun..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4YdFZLUfMo - this one's about a guy who falls in to the blue collar lifestyle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU05dbAD03g - a washed up boxer who redeems himself, his own little story

he also has a full character named Kenny Dennis [a blue collar Chicago'an, loves Brats, O'Doul's, his wife Jules.. used to be in a rap group called Tha Grimm Teachaz (of which serengeti actually made 2 albums as) then got into drugs and formed a C+C Music Factory style group with Anders Holm 'Ders' called PERFECTO (of which they actually made a full EP of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDWPhQ1tp1o)] whom he's made a few full length LPs as .. they usually receive more recognition than his own stuff because of the creativity/absurdity of them i think

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqrtoFWglMY [his biggest song, basically an introduction to the character]

long post, I know, but this dude is legitimately so fucking talented and just so goddamn underrated, it really tears me up inside thinking about it.. he released AOTY (for me) with Yoni Wolf (of WHY?) called Testarossa

it's an interesting question

obviously not all rappers talk about drugs sex guns money etc but enough do that it's worth asking the question

i like to think of it similarly to "genre fiction" like sci fi, detective pulp, fantasy in the sense that the artist works with a set framework of certain themes and tropes, but the way that they use it is completely individual

think about it, like on one hand Big L and Young Thug are both talking about drugs and gangs but they're totally different in just about every other way
