There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

Hey /mu/, I've been struggling with this technical issue for a little bit now on this track I still have no fucking clue what the deal is.

At the 3:35, 3:44, 3:57, and 4:05 (as well as a few more near the end) marks there is this audio glitch I keep running into where a "click" is happening whenever the bass note changes. I've tried resetting the plugin, increasing the ASIO buffer size samples when exporting, etc. and I can't figure this shit out.

Can anyone give me some ideas as to what's going on or how to solve this?

dc_crossing.jpg
98KB, 900x900px
>>69404798
Sounds like textbook DC crossing issues with the bassline- This could happen if for instance, you are using a sin sample as the root of your bass, its being fed midi in a sampler, and the amp envelope doesn't have enough release on it for the sine's waveform (or other waveform) to quietly fade out. Instead, the wave gets interrupted halfway through a wavecycle, and you hear a 'click'. NOTE: Same thing can happen if you are interrupting the waveform before dc crossing at the beginning of the sample as well. In this case, attack, or re positioning sample start so its at the DC crossing will work.

So I would investigate either your release settings on the volume/amp envelopes to start.

Solving problems like this are a lot easier when you use an oscilloscope. There's a free one called s(M)exoscope which you can try. Its 32 bit though so bring your wrapper.

Scenario happened where I thought my pets were on LSD because I got stuck in thought loop and the more I looked at them the more they acted stranger. I get massive migraines from weed. I have Chronic depression and mild anxiety. I even go into mild Alcoholic hallucinosis after drinking large amounts in 1 night. Not to mention I have a family history of schizophrenia.

I'm the person who posted that and I'm actually trying LSD for the first time tomorrow, coincidentally. Almost everyone in my family has schizophrenia.

Wish me luck.

Also, hallucinations from alcohol should be impossible. Theoretically possible from alcohol withdrawal, though. Do you get them many hours after imbibing, or shortly after?
>>
>>69405204
Not him but, no shit that's a bad idea if you have a family history of schizophrenia, suffer from multiple mental disorders, and get those kind of side effects from just weed and alcohol.
>>
>>69405252
Hmm, I wouldn't do it desu, but then I'm always the type of person who wants to try something new, so you're going to do it anyway.

>>69405276
Unfortunately I had no idea about the family history of schizophrenia when I took it.
>>
>>69405276
Some schizophrenics actually report LSD can help their symptoms if they're in a calm environment. The source of LSD hallucinations is thought to not be closely related to psychotic disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar. Weed is actually more dangerous for schizophrenics than LSD is. LSD just gets a bad rap because it's far more potent, and a lot easier to take too much LSD than too much weed.

We'll see, though. I'll report back on Friday/Saturday and see if I go insane or not. Hopefully I make some music at least.

>>69405357
It's 100 ug, and I have several tiers of backup plans. I think I'll almost definitely be fine. I sometimes get weird symptoms from weed, including delusions and hallucinations, but not to the point where I can't control them.

I wouldn't take a high dose of LSD, especially alone and for my first time, but with my low dose and safety measures (Xanax on table with note, various people to contact if I need to, relaxing and safe setting) I think there's almost no risk.

I'll admit 80% of my reason for trying it is because I want to see what listening to and producing music is like on it.
>>
>>69405357
ahh I see, that is unfortunate. Anyone who is interested in taking psychedelics should really look into that, but I understand not everyone knows or thinks to do that

-There is no groove. It's very rhythmically boring.
-The wide intervals don't really fit the track.
-The melody is kind of just spazzing around and not doing anything very musical.

Basically there's way too much going on and they're not really complementing each other much rhythmically, harmonically, melodically, timbre-wise, atmosphere-wise, sentiment-wise, or in pretty much any other quality I can think of.

Also, the mixing is really terrible.

The drums sound kind of cool though.

>>
>>69405683
I've heard about that. I'll try to bring my DAW up and have music playing before I take anything, so that hopefully during my trip I'll spend at least a little bit of time with it.
>>
>>69405546
I think it sounds neat, but it's a bit relentless. Making it slightly more sparse and only get thick at climactic parts. Also nothing feels "featured", it's very flat. A little more separation by panning and a little more definite localization of the elements would help clear it up a bit. I like the lead though.

Also you mix'd this primarily in headphones didn'cha?

>>
>>69405546
are you the same guy that posted the dnb last thread?

I think you should introduce breaks throughout your tracks because it does get a little restless the more you listen.

When I make loud songs I like to phase into a quieter moment the bring in more hectic parts, then repeat. This way it keeps the listeners patience.
>>
>>69405803
then* sorry
>>
>>69405743
HPPD is my only real fear. My understanding is it should be very unlikely from a single low dose of LSD with no other combined drugs, or if it does happen should be very temporary. But who knows. I'm willing to live with some minor symptoms if they don't last more than a month or two.

>>69405803
There definitely need to be breaks but even then I don't think the track would be good IMO. I'd remove everything but the drums, add some breaks and transitions, and start over with more carefully defined and separated elements. The rhythm is not very danceable, whereas good DnB can be, even stuff that's higher tempo and more hectic than this.

>>

>is it something you can see in suicide sheep?
To me this reads as "is this shitty generic overproduced EDM"?

If so I'd say yes, except not really overproduced because the mixing isn't great. But yes I could see it being "good" enough to be packaged with that kind of trash if the mixing were better.
>>
How is the mastering on this? https://clyp.it/tcsiofyt

The vocals aren't mastered yet so I need some tips on how to make it with well with the rest of the track?

Also, thoughts on the mashup from a casual listening stand point and not necessarily from a technical stand point?
>>
>>69405731
Yes, I need monitors, can't be helped right now.
>>69405803
I didn't make that track but I think I know which one you're talking about.
>>
>>69405143
The composition is extremely generic but there's a LOT more going into that track than just being a 4-chord 4/4 pop song. For one, the production is really excellent on a lot of levels. Also, people's tastes differ and really enjoy these kinds of generic compositions.

As someone who hates those kinds of compositions, even I can see how the song is catchy due to everything else going on.
>>
>>69405932
The transitions aren't the problem. The performance and the composition as a whole are the problem.
>>
>>69405995
what do you mean
>>
>>69405952
The mixing and mastering aren't good. You didn't make enough space.

>Also, thoughts on the mashup from a casual listening stand point and not necessarily from a technical stand point?
It's okay, but mashups this simple are cheating, so I'm really just calling the original songs okay.
>>
>>69406009
Timing is off, in a bad way.

The whole song is basically just infinitely repeating the same boring, terribly played motif with different shitty effects each time.

The piano accompaniment towards the end sounds kind of cool (yet too simple) but that's about it.

Also, now that I listen again, the timing of the transitions is also off.
>>
>>69405889
>>69405985
I agree the production is good. I was talking about pure composition. Maybe I should just focus on making my shit actually sound good because I'm still pretty bad at /prod/ after a year and a half.
>>
>>69406098
Other guy here. I don't see why repeating the motif with different arrangement is a bad thing. Plenty of music does that. Just saying because I once got same comments on that and I don't understand why.
>>
>>69406184
Compositionally it's actually pretty good in some ways. It's very cliche and generic, but that doesn't necessarily mean "bad". Also, the performance and timing of everything is spot-on (though she's being autotuned and possibly edited in other ways), on top of the effects and pristine recording and mixing and mastering. It's a combination of many factors.
>>
Hardest thing in "music making" for me?

>composition?
Nope.
>mixing?
Nope.
>arrangement?
>Nope.

But believing in anything I make and not jumping on something new practically every day. I still don't quite love anything enough to work on it, so I have nothing developed but have a SHITTON of "ideas".
>>
>>69406224
It's not necessarily a bad thing.

My rationale is hard to articulate. If a motif is being repeated constantly, something else has to give. I think either:

- The other parts of the arrangement need to be very dynamic and complex and interesting.

OR

- There need to be more variations in or additions to the motif, not perfect or near-perfect repetition. Including what part of the phrase it's played in, the rhythm and accents, the pitch, the harmony, and/or a billion other variables.

At least, that's my personal taste. Obviously some disagree. But I don't like so much straight repetition unless other parts are non-repetitive and are mixed in correctly.

I think there are better music theoretic explanations of what I mean. I'm not an expert. Basically, there is a lot of music out there that I like and that does constantly repeat a motif, but they just do it so much better.
>>
>>69405943
thanks for your honest feedback. what do you hear wrong in the mix?
>>
>>69406282
Same man. I got hundreds of short vignettes and very little that I've worked to completion.

https://clyp.it/pl5rihxq
>>
>>69406364
I can't comment because I'm wearing colored headphones and have almost no ear training.

Just from the start, I feel like the pads are taking up too much of the spectrum and maybe the volume and headspace too. Things feel like they're competing too much.

The lead melody feels a little thin and weak. Vocal sample is probably okay if the other stuff is pulled back to give it more room to breathe.

The kick drum feels too weak and washed out. It's barely cutting through. Possibly needs ADSR and reverb? adjustment. And also just general mixing to give it room. Sounds like there's sidechaining, but it's not really doing the job here to feel the kick impact.

Also various other things. I'm a terrible mixer myself so I couldn't tell you what you should do exactly, but I know an amateur mix when I hear one.
>>
https://clyp.it/xwqqkrpd

Rate please, even if you hate it I'd like to know what you dislike about it. This is a rough mix
>>
>>69406734
Repetitive and poppy for my tastes but not bad if that's what you're going for. The melody timing does feel a bit weird/off to me in a few parts, but other than that the composition seems fine.

If you have to literally willfully think of a genre before you make a track, you might as well call it quits now. That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Not really going for repetitive. As a person that may not be into that particular type of music, what kind of changes do you think would draw you in more?
>>
>>69402574
I like the melodies actually

>>69402665
Sounds cool enough to me. I think everything else is too loud or the drums are too high frequency. That's just what I think though, maybe that's what you're hearing. Was nice though.

>>69402733
What you've done is really nice in my opinion, but it can't hold my attention without me skipping around. Like, The drum patterns are too repetitive for my taste and the ambient sections are too ambient! lol. That's just what I think though. There were some parts that I really enjoyed, I love the way this track makes me feel at times. At the same time, I get bored and want to turn it off.
>>
>>69407067
When I say the drums are too high frequency, I mean they're more towards the same frequency range as the Melodie, so they're not as distinct possibly.
>>
>>69406941
Well, I didn't mean it so specific, it's more like, one week I'm composing a classical piece for a piano or orchestra and the other I'm producing some electronic pop song. I'm spreading myself too thin. I never think of a genre before composing, wtf.

Audiences for both are vastly different. Can't get a hit with millions of plays with classical music today, but at the same time I want plays and people to care.

>>

So the impression I'm getting is you're thinking very heavily about marketing and audience. If that's what draws you to music, you will never succeed. You're literally saying "I want to make music in the most popular genre so I can be rich and famous". Less than 1% of all top artists out there probably got into music that way.

And even if it IS what draws you to music, why on Earth would you think about that when odds are you're probably pure shit in every genre imaginable and would get very few plays regardless? Focus on getting good.
>>
Fuck me, I can't produce electronic shit while playing with piano sounds, how do people do it? I literally can't hear it in my head.

I always make a type of music based on the instrument I play. If it's fucking funny trumpets I'll make borat music, if it's a flute I'll make middle ages shit, if it's a metallic bassy synth I'll make a future house, if it's a comfy soft piano I'll make romantic classical. God damnit.
>>
>>69407164
>Probably one more instrument added to the arrangement, or a more complex melody, or a more complex and changing drum pattern. Everything changes every 4/8 bars, but within each 4-bar phrase it's pretty repetitive and generic.

Alright, will do man! I might add strings and gate them
>>
>>69407164
You what m8

In music there is a measure, like this for example.

O = 1 beat

so if we put 8/4 that means there's 8 O's, for example. This is just notation, there's a million ways to describe these concepts.

So
O O O O O O O O | would be one measure
O O O O O O O O | O O O O O O O O is two.

You can also call a measure a bar, as they look like bars.
>>
>>69407204
or maybe instead they should get involved with music on that side of the industry?????
>>
>>69407240
You may have misread my post? I meant every 4 and every 8 bars, not 4 out of 8. For the most part it's just changing every 4 bars.
>>
>>69407250
Sure, that's also an option. But the impression I'm getting is he wants the personal fame for himself, not to help someone else be famous.

Certain DAWs have features that other DAWs don't. As far as capabilities I'm not sure, as far as your personal ease of use I'm not sure as well.
>>
>>69407315
That could be cool but an easier way of saying that is just an alternating pattern of variation and repetition, 4-bar-wise.

Pro-Tools/Cubase or bust

If you're new it's best not to spend that much money just yet. Everything can work, it's just up to the user to make it work.
>>
>>69407359
I wonder if it's possible to make a breakbeat, but like a whole phrase is sort of a break.

Maybe like, a breakdown? P cool stuff here

Btw, I haven't /prod/uced anything in a month or so, been busy, I'm thinking of focusing on this track now because it's the one that I currently like the most. Is it enjoyable? Does it have potential?
>>
>>69407403
I don't agree with the notion that it's "Pro-Tools/Cubase".

Excellent music is being made with all sorts of DAWs. and every good DAW has all the features i really need
>>
>>69407460
Pretty good but yeah needs better mixing.
>>
>>69402514
You may have to compress the vox more, it seems to drop in and out of focus.
More low end like the other dude mentioned.
A lot of the synth lines are sharing the same frequency range, so it kind of gets in the way, you need to spatially separate them more by panning them harder and maybe more verb to push it to the background more?
I dunno, just suggestions.
>>
>>69407460
>I bet I'm the only one who manages to ruin his tracks the more he spends mixing
No, a lot of people have a rule about spending as little time and effort on mixing as possible.
>>
>>69407470
i agree with this too all the big name daws are capable if you know what youre doing
>>
>>69407476
>>69407544
Yeah, now that I'm listening to it with fresh ears I think the problem was that I spent so much time listening to it that I fucked up my ears, and due to increased sensitivity I started cutting those high frequencies because they were literally painful. First mix was still far from perfect, but better.

I literally don't even save for like the first 30 mins when I'm working on a new project. If I don't like it I delete it and start a new one. We're in the learning phase anyway, We'll make better shit.

If you don't feel like you'd be able to sell it or don't like it, drop it. Time is money and all of it should be spent perfecting your craft if you're serious about this.

So I was gifted a korg padkontrol and ableton light 9 for my birthday and now I'm looking into getting a midi keyboard to start making some music. Can anyone recommend a good midi keyboard for under 200 bucks new? Not sure if I need something with drum pads since I have the padkontrol but I'm pretty clueless so any suggestions will help.
>>
The volume fader and pots on one of my midi keyboards have died. Fuckery.
Still got another controller with pots I can use but I hate losing equipment. Only saving grace for that keyboard is the pitch bend/mod wheel still work and I don't have them on any other thing so it stays for now.

Cool. DON'T OVERDO IT. One or two coats, not more or you'll overdampen the thing and it won't work super great. Dip it down to couple inches up the wire and let it hang-dry for about 24hrs before you touch it. Plasti-Dip is try to the touch in like 20mins but doesn't fully cure for like a day, so just be patient and let it take its time.

What are you using for the contact? Guitar piezo?

D112 is the best choice imo if you're sticking with close kick drum miking. But the Beta 52 is pretty great as well, but more sensitive to placement (it's more like the old D12 than the D112). The biggest factor is going to be the kick drum and placement anyway, and just plain taste. I love the D112 though.

Also if you want something that sounds 'spiciously like a Beta 52 for $40 get a Nady DM-90. I have one and it makes me hard.

>>
>>69420016
I'm not but the response curve does look nice. The thing with the D112 is that it's designed NOT to be meaty. The Nady, Beta 57, D12 etc all have big beautiful proximity effects, which make them sensitive to precise placement. The D112 is a really nasally sounding mic that doesn't get big proximity boosts, so it makes placement pretty easy without getting all bassy in the proximity zone. Similar to an RE20 but not to the same extent. Makes the D112 really easy to work with but also you're kinda "stuck" with the sound, a D112 sounds the same all the time.

That mic does looks pretty noice though
