Ya don't listen to them, listening to full albums is imperative for developing a full coherent opinion and introduction to an artist, and even then it's still a good idea to check out their other stuff depending on the artist and if they change sounds a lot. I hate when I ask people why they didn't like an album and they go "I didn't like the first couple tracks so I turned it off" that shit bugs the hell out of me

>>
>>69398526
I have one of 'em faggy-ass pretentious rating systems where 2.5 means I liked it. As for why I didn't enjoy it more, I'd say it's because while I loved the arrangements and I secretly feel she could be the next Scott Walker if she puts in the work, but her vocal style makes all the songs seem kind of samey even though the music wasn't. I also have a hard time vibing with the "ethereal" aesthetic that seems to be all the rage for the past years.
>>
>>69398422

Alain is a cool guy.
>>
I have to give many, many albums I actually like three stars, since I only use full stars.

So I have only five ratings and save the highest for my absolute favorites. Leaves only two tiers to differentiate between shades of "good": 3 stars and 4 stars.

I gave the likes of Bowies Blackstar or most The Cure albums three stars, so I can give their better albums four stars to accentuate that they are better.

RYM is pain.

really? one of your favorites? they sold out big.

i dont listen to songs, only albums.
i like pop and rock more than i do metal.
>>
>>69399314
I think if you knew more about the band as people you wouldn't think they "sold out". They just like to change their sound with each album and they shifted to more accessible music. That isn't inherently selling out. If you prefer rock you should listen to their album this year The Stage, honestly. It's a really catchy project with great riffs and an ear for composition. You might like Hail To The King too even tho I think that one's hot garbage. Their first 3 are all in the top 100 of my favorite albums

You have bach, and a lot of popular singles, that normally means on rym you're a higher than thou mixture of an avant-teen and poptimist, literally the worst kind of user. You'll have some super obscure releases as 5s along with ABBA and other shit, and you think your taste is absolutely the best. Someone who will unironically call someone an embryo.

If you just enjoy those records, then good job, though I really hate people who overrate Bach, but those ratings and records are massively indicative of someone who thinks they're part of the rym elite.

It doesn't affect me. I've been on /mu/ for over a year and I still mostly listen to music that a lot of /mu/ hates (dadrock meme etc).

I just find it insulting to actual music that such things like faust can be considered good music or even music when it's lacking any semblance of song structure, rhythm and sometimes even melody. You may as well just go into the street and record cars driving past and call it music because there isn't much difference.

It makes it easy for any talentless idiot to record some random noise that is not representative of any of the artist's "emotions and call it music and be worshipped by circlejerking idiots.

Same deal with the "noise" genre, mostly just awful Sunn 0))) rip offs (who I do think have artistic merit - at least live) that can't play their instruments properly so they play easy random stuff and call it music because they can't produce actual music.

Try Faust IV. They all have the ability play their instruments well and claiming otherwise is just dishonest. And just because something doesn't follow a traditional structure doesn't mean it has no structure at all. You know, while you might hear random metallic scraping noises on the intro of Meadow Meal, someone else might recognize that it's actually a prepared piano that transitions into "real" playing, which is a theme of the album.

The album transitions back and forth between "traditional" forms of music (classical, jazz, rock) and "avant-garde" forms of music (tape music, early electronic inspired by Stockhausen, noise, field recordings, spoken word) pretty consistently. It also has recurring musical themes like the guitar accompaniment under the chanting in Meadow Meal being an inversion of the motif that plays during the Miss Fortune coda. They also use the same synthesizer techniques during juxtapositions. Faust is so planned out that it's basically a concept album. You're really attacking the wrong target.

Melody is simply a succession of ordered notes. Whether or not you find a particular succession of notes "satisfying" is a subjective experience, often based on the culture you grew up in. Not only that, but the first definition of music on dictionary.com includes tone color as an element of music, and you only need one element to be considered music. So you're wrong.
>>
>>69411051
anytime friendo

>>69411057
kek. you're objectively wrong. by that definition any sequence of sound anywhere can be a melody, because everything is 'ordered' by something.

>>69411171

because not everything is music. it's just common sense.

using his argument you can stretch those definitions so far that anything that produces some sort of sound, whether audible by humans or not is music.
>>
>>69411171
I have to interject here. You are making such an ass out of yourself this whole thread and it's almost commendable that you're still at it.

No, not everything is music because not everything makes sound, let alone sounds of various pitches. But yes, the sound of your washing machine running is considered music(check out Matmos II), because it creates an order of varied pitches and that case even sometimes has a set rhythm which is more than enough. A train horn is music. Your cat's meows are music. Open your mind and realize music is something that exists in real life. It doesn't have to be a fucking verse-chorus pop track by a fourpiece to be music
>>
>>69411212

It's one thing if the album you are referring to is completely aleatoric in nature, but it's not. Faust's s/t has song structure throughout. Unconventional? Yes, but it's still there. The way you are describing that album just proves to everybody that you've just failed to understand it.

the only reason you think faust has structure is because you are able to repetitively listen to it and memorize it.
