What's your opinion on sampling?
>>
is good
don't know why people think it's only used in hip hop tho
>>
>>69395498
define sampling
rock samples riffs from other bands
electronic/hip hop samples everything
i don't see why ppl hate it
>>
>>69395498
sampling makes up half of my favorite albums. Of course I like it.
>>
I think it's fine but artists who sample should sample legally
>>
lazy, if you're not doing some complex stuff with it
>>
>>69395539
what albums
>>69395525
>rock samples riffs from other bands
that would be pastiche, not sampling
and all styles of music do it
I think sampling is picking peaces of recorded media
>>69395557
lazy sampling sucks pretty bad
I tried my hand at collage a few times and it's hard to come with cohesive shit
>>

Okay 'half' was an overexaggeration, but just to list a few of my favorites:

J Cole - Born Sinner
Jay Z - Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint
Kanye West - Late Registration
Kendrick Lamar - Section 80, To Pimp a Butterfly
Madvillainy
OutKast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders

for you

lol I mean If a rapper is good he can turn a half measure jazz loop and a drumtrack into a catchy song but I know what you want to say
>>
I'm very liberal when it comes to sampling, even the laziest forms of it are transformative. I think that slowing down that diana ross sample really did change it into a different song, and it should be considered legal.
>>
I always recommend this blog/artist for people who like sample based music

>>69395651
oh yea I get it
but I was more inspired by negativland
those guys could take a shitton of cuts and mash up and it would still (sometimes at least) sound so fucking smooth

I'm not much of a hip hop guy but this here is one of my favorite albums ever

>>69395746
I agree
it doesn't mean I like it tho lol
>>
>>69395760
Not as much of a fan of the more rock-based hip hop but I like it.
>>
>>69395746
Legal? Yes. Good music? No.

In contrast, Eccojams actually adds changing effects, modified arrangement, etc. making it far more transformative and hypnotic.
>>
Yeah sampling like anything can be done well or not. As a producer i always pitch things differently, slow down, speed up, reverse, edit and arrange my samples so that they are no longer recognisable to the original.

That said, i've made some bangers by being lazy and looping a bar or 16.
