i would probably put ambient into 3 categories if i had to

tim hecker, fennesz, and machinefabriek come to mind
check out harmony in ultraviolet, endless summer, and marijn respectively

>drone, string-based ambient
check out gas (start with zauerberg 2bh, pop is also genius) and stars of the lid (ballasted orchestra is a good place to start, their most famous two albums are just transcendent though)

>"classic" synth ambient, spacey
brian eno (music for airports), klaus schulze (irrlicht), biosphere (substrata), aphex twin (selected ambient 2)

and then you of course have ambient techno, stuff like early aphex twin and autechre, boards of canada, voices from the lake, deepchord presents echospace should get you started
