All music is bad music

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

3rd November backlog chart done \o/

Here is the most interesting stuff (almost all of them are from 2016):

>Songs Ohia - Mi Sei Apparso Come Un Fantasma (2001)
Great live.

>Mojave 3 - Excuses for Travellers (2000)
Good bipolar pop: from Grandaddy-tier dreampop to slowcore.

>Pardon My Carbon - AMERICALABALA
Art pop/progressive pop with disorienting melodies & rhythms.
mfw I love The Fiery Furnaces now

>The Lucid Dream - Compulsion Songs
Psych Rock with DUB influences: imagine Echo & the Bunnymen reggae jams.

>The Explorers Club - Together
Another perfect emulation of The Beach Boys circa 1967-1969.

>Kaiju - Seven Sins
Dub-y Techno. I love that shit.

>Kaazi - Zen Travel
Dreamy Outsider Deep House. Chill AF. 100% SILK rules.

>µ-Ziq - RY30 Trax
>µ-Ziq - Aberystwyth Marine
Great IDM from the '90s (unreleased archives).

>Ital Tek - Hollowed
Better than I thought.

>Ty Segall - Emotional Mugger
I have never listened to Ty Segall before (so I have no idea if it's good or not by his own standards) but it's more satisfying than the 2 albums released by Thee Oh Sees.

>Russian Circles - Guidances
Massive Post-Rock, Atmospheric Sludge Metal: lyrical & passionate: very great! I'm new to this genre, but I'm going to explore it soon.

>Aesop Rock - The Impossible Kid
noiiiice

>Pinkshiyultrablast - Grandfeathered
Noise pop with female singer :3

>ROAR - Impossible Animals
Good Chamber indie-Pop influenced by 1960's classics (you know who I'm talking about)

>Hiele - Ritmische Bezinning
IDM/Bass. Really varied tracks but constantly interesting.

>Norin - Bakom planteringen
Ambient Techno, BoC-tier. The other released by Norin (member from Lust fro Youth) this year aren't as great FYI.

>MMOTHS - Luneworks
Hypnotising Ambient (Techno)/Modern Classical/Drone.
…'member Replica?!

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy (1985)
>Noise Pop, Post-Punk, Shoegaze
The opener is probably the best song on here, I really like the way the drum sounds in the intro which sadly is not used anymore or gets drowned under guitar feedback later. The whole album sounds somewhat like the Beach Boys got depressed and decided to fuck around with distortion instead of melodies. The influence on shoegaze (which I'm not so fond of) is obvious, but it has a darker, more apathetic atmosphere to it that is reminiscent of Joy Division (the Reid brothers being better vocalists than Ian Curtis imo) and other bleak 80s post-punk bands. 6/10

I'm not anon, and I think the big three Can albums are all phenomenal, but I can't see how people think Tago Mago isn't #1. Every song evolves and flows into the next. Ege Bamyasi has some shorter interesting pieces that don't necessarily go anywhere whereas Tago Mago just feels more like a cohesive whole. Halleluhwah alone could tip the scales

Nyar, I believe you had claimed Wizard’s spot if he didn’t give me a rec? So, if you’re still interested, you can send something. Otherwise, the spot's open to whoever

>Nara Leao - Dez Anos Depois

Leao has this gorgeous voice that works really well over the bossa nova style on here. The songs are pretty standard as far as bossa nova goes, with easygoing, upbeat melodies and some fun little guitar work. However, this is a really consistent release. Since most of the tracks on here are fun and between 2-4 minutes, it flows quite nicely from front to back. None of the tracks on here really overstay their welcome and there are some fantastic singles on here, like “Por Toda Minha Vida” and “O Amor Em Paz”, which both feature great string arrangements. Anyway, this is an outstanding listen, which is really consistent despite being over an hour overall.

8.5/10

>Robbie Basho - Visions of the Country

I know very little about Primitivism outside of a handful of Fahey releases but… this is just incredible. Basho’s voice is booming and compliments the guitar-driven atmosphere on here. It’s one of the deeper singing voices I’ve heard and the way it echoes and resonates reminds me a lot of Tim Buckley - yet it has a distinct country flair. The guitar picking is just incredible, flowing pretty much nonstop throughout this record, rarely missing a beat. It gets a bit repetitive over the course of this album but I like that it goes through these droney passions and suddenly transitions in these rapid-fire sections. Something about this style, when executed correctly, is just heartbreakingly gorgeous. The guitar, Basho’s voice and the occasional use of piano all meld into something incredible.

9/10

jangle you no longer have to see my goodbye & hello score

The Walkmen - Bows + Arrows (2004)
>indie rock, post-punk revival

Any good aspect of this album hinges entirely on the ferocious, wonderful single "The Rat". It does everything I want post-punk revival to do, it keeps the energy and aggression of its parent genre while adding in some more modern indie flourishes, like the organ and Leithauser's vocals. The rest is forgettable at best and dreadful at worst. It goes between failed attempts at recapturing the energy of "The Rat" and focusing on a more soundscaping, almost post-rocky sound, and it does both poorly. The former tracks are limp and uninteresting and the latter tracks go absolutely nowhere, and they too have no energy to them at all. A classic modern example of a band with one /great/ song that hasn't done literally anything else of note.

I listened to the whole thing despite not really caring for the EAI/Onkyo genre in the first place.

It definitely wasn't worth my time, but I was pretty impressed with the amount of variation present.

If you're the kind of person that really likes that genre though, I would really recommend you try it out. Even if you usually don't care for onkyo it has some incredible pieces on it.

I should probably listen to Duos for Doris soon, as I feel like I didn't "get" it on my first couple listens and got really stubborn. I was being truly honest in disliking it, though, and that's all I can really do as far as having an opinion, right?

>>
>>69385948
i can see people were disappointed because it came out after a relatively long wait and for that it had too little material. it's very short, tracks are pretty single-minded, repetitive without much dynamic, it's pretty, dunno, unemotional except for one or two songs in the latter half, while most people probably get into them for their angst more than their neu! influences
>>
>>69386054
I still don't know how I feel about Amnesiac.
It has got some awesome songs on it. Knives Out, Pyramid Song, I Might Be Wrong, and Life in a Glass House come to mind.
But overall, it's so forgettable to me, and I rarely play it.
I certainly don't dislike it, but I'd rather listen to their other albums.

>>69386068
TKOL is definitely a mood album. Some days it's just a solid album and other days when I'm in the right mindset, perhaps it's 2 am and I'm tired and want to unwind, it's amazing.

>>69386162
Hmm, I never thought about it from that perspective since I didn't follow the hype train. I ignored Radiohead for a while because my dad listened to them so much.
Also, you're right, there's a lack of emotional weight to some of the tracks which is what makes Kid A and In Rainbows the superior albums for me.
>>

I have you to thank for getting me to check out Rife W/ Typo.
You described it as "Replica with jazzier samples" and I immediately dropped what I was doing and listened to it.

Serpent Music is a solid release. Personally, I think it has some issues, but it's incredibly unique and has me very excited for his future material.
I think he's capable of dropping something incredible if he refines his craft.

By the way, if you have any other recs from this year similar to those albums I'd gladly take them.

>>69386777
AMSP is definitely worth a listen.
And yeah, A Weird Exits is so solid, it's a wonder how it's not being talked about much, at least from what I've seen.
Probably their best album yet and has that krautrock influence to it.

Been getting into Hüsker Dü lately. First album is pretty unmemorable, Zen Arcade is slowly becoming new favorite album, and New Day Rising sounds a little too clean for my tastes, but it has some undeniably catchy melodies. I can see the whole "foundational for modern alt rock" angle that their critic-fans crow about.

Completely agree with those onions on Tago Mago. The highs are probably higher, but in that described respect, I prefer Future Days and Ege Bamyasi. Future Days is definitely the most enjoyable of the three, if the least aggressively experimental.

>I think it has some issues, but it's incredibly unique and has me very excited for his future material.
agreed. i have to give it a lot of respect off the bat for creating an album blending post-industrial and hypnagonic pop. in 10 years, he's going to be dropping some mind blowing shit.
as for other recs, my newest obsession is chris†††'s No Lives Matter. don't get deterred by the vaporwave genre tag. this is where the genre should have been going for 3 years (i.e. away from boring edm trap garbage). it teeters between angsty teenage rebellion and the real horror of death so rapidly that you're left feeling pretty fucking horrified. No End is legit the most effective vapor loop i've heard since Eccojams.
Lil Data's Lil Tape is great experimental, semi dancy electronic stuff, featuring occasional sections of pure glitch. you don't need to be into the pc music shit to like it either.
Scotch BX's 1B (Blanket Authority) is a horrifyingly long beast of pure minimal techno glitch bliss. every track is slow, but never stops evolving. you have to commit to it, but if you dug factory floor's new album you'll probably like it.
been shilling it a lot on here recently, but Fuuka ASMR's Squishy Moments is more or less impossible to describe with genres. that one's really short. just trust me on it.
lastly, here's some more good shit from orange milk:
https://orangemilkrecords.bandcamp.com/album/and-lo-artifice-did-beget-artifice
https://orangemilkrecords.bandcamp.com/album/binasu
https://orangemilkrecords.bandcamp.com/album/omaru
https://orangemilkrecords.bandcamp.com/track/megga-millionz-feat-dai-burger (this track only. it's killer, but the rest of the album's pretty meh.)
>>
>>69386862
Its probably down to how people write off/are done with garage rock revival. I hope they do another pure krautrock album next, it'd be fun.

>>69387055
Husker Du are great, they're pretty underrated by the daily boys it seems. Even Candy Apple Grey and Warehouse are really worthwhile. I love Bob Mould, I don't think I've ever disliked an album of his out of the 10+ I've listened to between Husker Du, Sugar and his solo releases.

>>69387166
Ehhh, I listened to that Christtt album after it was shopped around a bit, and I clearly didn't find it as revelatory as you did. Thought it perhaps featured better than average songwriting for vaporwave, but that could be due to some of its sample choices.

Honestly ECCOjams to me was pretty one of a kind with its simple editing and uber-repetitive looping. Anything else trying the same shtick for a quick buck off of easily-made music is pretty crass imo. Vaporwave has always been as much about visuals and trends as it has been about the music. People keep looking for the album or artist that will critically "legitimize" vaporwave, but it's just not going to happen. It's too much a game of style over substance.
>>
>>69387166
Will definitely check those out. All of them sound very interesting.

SERIOUSLY REC ME A HEX COLOR TO USE

Buena Vista Social Club - Buena Vista Social Club (1997)
>son cubano, bolero, afro-cuban jazz

It's the quintissential Grammy-winning "world" music album. Not bad by any stretch of the imagination, and boasting some wonderful performances, but oddly sterile and soulless. It reeks of American influence, I love Ry Cooder to death but his influence here takes the passion out of the music, and especially out of Ibrahim Ferrer's vocal performance, which is otherwise exceptional. Passionless or not, it sure is nice to listen to, and the blend of traditional pop with afro-cuban stylings is really fun. Isn't anything special at all, and I'm /certain/ there are much other better albums in this style, but nice nonetheless.

2.5-

PiL - Metal Box (1979)
>post-punk, experimental rock

A very ominous record. It fits snugly within the confines of rock and punk music yet its so utterly alien at the same time. This majorly has to do with the low-key, ambient guitar playing, used to create texture rather than in your face riffs, which is an awesome thing. Most everything here is based around the rhythm that the bass and drums create, which range from groovy as fuck with a lot of krautrock influence to creepy and lurchy. Jah Wobble's bass playing is out of this world, he anchors every single track and his bass lines often come out as being the only real melodic element most of these tracks have, and they're all catchy as hell. Lydon is honestly the weakest link, his vocals add little and when they add something they only add an element of irritation, most of the tracks that predominantly feature his vocals rank among my least favorite tracks here. Disregarding the vocals and a slight bit of monotony, a wonderful album.

3.0+

So far it doesn't seem that great, to write off white privilege as something purely used by SJWs to shut down conversation is disingenuous at best. As a white person, you're not responsible for slavery and shouldn't feel guilty about it but you should realise you do have privileges and others are more oppressed than you.

Eyen-schtur-zen-day Noy-bawt-zen - Ende Neu
Good, bit rammshteiny sometimes but what are you going to do, rammstein is a cancer on industrial music... Once you hear it, you will never escape it

McCarthy - That's All Very Well but...
A V E R A G E

Various Artists - Killing Capitalism with Kindness
I need to seriously make a Dunedin sound chart, there are some ripper chunes here, some that don't land quite so good, but eh, still want to do one

Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030
Fookin Great... Really liked most everything here, Esp. liked the track Madness, can't stop listening to that one

Tim Buckley - Sketches for my Sweetheart the Drunk
Bit disappointed that it didn't continue in the tradition of the previous album, sure there are little flourishes here and there, but it's abundantly clear that the time he spent hanging around some of the /alternative/ folk in late 90s america rubbed off on him, it's very similar to some of the run of the mill pop-alt albums of that particular era... It also doens't need to be a double album, because there are some p good songs here, but they are bogged down by manifold filler...

Bob Dylan - Time out of Mind
It's pretty hard to see him THIS washed up

Sorry for disappearing for so long, school is pretty hectic. Listened to the Glenn Gould Solitude trilogy: fantastic set of audio documentaries, the first and last ones were particularly moving. Sometimes the documentary layers two different people talking on top of each other and it can be a bit confusing but as long as you're paying attention it is a great series.

Hey, I'm a "new" trip here. Here are my essential winter albums. Thoughts?
>>
>>69400940
Welcome aboard, "new"friend

A bunch of these just seem depressing. Good music either way.

Don't recognize Lil Spook, Maniac, or the Jpegmafia guy. They all look intriguing tho.

every time I'm in the car with my ex she puts on her playlist and i make fun of her for consuming music in the wrong manner
>>
>>69401039
Yeah, the depression factor is no real coincidence.

And:

Lil Spook/Spooky Black/corbin = Depressive, atmospheric R&B and Hip Hop

Maniac = The epitome of almost everything I love about OG Memphis Hip Hop.

JPEGMAFIA = Industrial, moody, experimental hip hop with very blunt, contrarian and heavily politically charged lyricism.

>>69401099
>jenny death is the superior disc

So this is how we're gonna start out, huh?

Just kidding, but I can see why people would prefer Jenny Death, I just prefer experimental hip hop and electronic music and more depressive music as a whole so when niggas on the moon finally clicked with me, it REALLY fucking clicked with me. I still really love Jenny Death, though.

The depressive lyrics and themes, especially on songs like GRAVE WITHIN A GRAVE, COLLAPSE AND APPEAR, and PERSISTENCE. The production is also very grim, dusty, and generally eerie. The fact that it was released on December 18th probably also adds to why I associate it with wintertime. I should also add TRICK DICE to my winter list.

>>

I had this same experience with Oblivion Access, I really love it though. More ""experimental"" with the sounds he uses in this one and just darker. Fucking Leonard's Lake is such a good track too.
I'm dying to hear more LUM production. I love lil Travis
>>
Got around to some can't-believe-I-haven't-listened-to-this-yet albums today.

>Patti Smith - Horses
Straddles some line between interesting/innovative ("Birdland") and somewhat annoying at times. Just my initial impression.

>The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request
Honestly, it's way too long and half of it is filler, but has some great moments ("Jesus", "Anemone")

>Baby Huey - The Living Legend
Pretty great. Every song. Just wish he were on every track.

>Glenn Branca - The Ascension
Picked up a lot of pace and ended up pretty exciting. I'll listen again.
>>
>>69402177
Yeah, darker is definitely a good way to describe it. To me it really just translates as a very gothic hip hop album and GRAVE WITHIN A GRAVE is definitely the biggest supporter of that argument. I love LEONARD'S LAKE too, I feel like it gets swept under the rug a lot. OPPOSITE LANES and PERSISTENCE are my favorite tracks. I could honestly gush about LIL UGLY MANE for days. THE WEEPING WORM is one of (if not) my favorite album/EP of all time.

I decided to actually listen to some music today. What a novel concept.

>Medicine - Shot Forth Self Living
This was really great. I loved how the dreamy vocals floated on top of the noisy guitars. The noise was not too harsh or overbearing and created a pleasant atmosphere of floating swirly melodies. It reminded me of The Jesus and Mary Chain, but i liked this a lot more because it had a lot denser shoegazey production. Also holy hell what a closing track. green diamond/10

>Bing Crosby - White Christmas (Merry Christmas on the original release)
>Christmas Music, Traditional Pop

The classics all manage to take you back to more innocent times, and that nostalgia alone is what will make this release for most people. Crosby, despite his great voice, is sort of limited and the generic 50s pop backing him up is nothing to write home about. Another problem is that a good chunk of these tracks are clear filler between the hits; not necessarily terrible but there's a reason you never hear them as much as White Christmas.

I said that Songs for Christmas was too long for how little good content there is. Maybe it's just me, but hearing good renditions of okay songs that I was already tired of before hearing that album was too much for me. Silver & Gold is longer but a much more bearable listen, as it's more creative, original, and just has more good songs in general.

Fuck it, I might just move Trip onto the next round b/c no one is giving me another rec.

>Deathspell Omega - Synarchy of Molten Bones

Considering I’ve never listened to black metal (afaict), this was somewhat of a new experience for me. On the other hand, I have absolutely no way to judge this one. Everything on here is heavy as hell though, with brutal vocals, intense drumming and screaming guitar. At times, the guitar can be nice, switching between thrash metal speed and the occasional proggy, slowed down passage. This definitely has a fair amount of prog influence, with a fair amount of mechanical sounding time-signature changes. Not something I’m usually very into but I think I appreciated their ability to switch fairly quickly and frequently. I’m typically not interested in music this heavy but I did like that this took me out of my comfort zone in a metal atmosphere. The fact that it was only 30 minutes was nice, it could’ve gotten to be too much if it was any longer. Likely something I won’t ever revisit but it was certainly a different experience.

5/10

>The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

This couldn’t be more opposite of S’ rec. Everything on here is incredibly upbeat, happy and carefree. The whole album has a bit of an Avalanches kind of feel to it, with a huge host of electronic and funk samples and occasional happy-go-lucky vocals. I feel like I just sat down and watched Saturday cartoons and a bunch of corny ‘90s TV cartoons. This record just put me in a good mood and was surprisingly consistent from front to back. The score of this one will likely bump up on repeated listens, I really fucking enjoyed it.

Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges - Clube da Esquina (1972)
>MPB

Real good stuff, but it's at its best when it sticks to just Nascimento and Borges, the tracks with extra collaborators kinda hurt the pure songwriting genius these two have. Their solo songs and their collaborative songs are absolutely genius, they're wonderfully poppy but they're not scared to turn up the fuzz and rock the house at times, even incorporating a lot of psychedelia into the songs. The ballad-type songs are a bit less amazing, they're decent but they focus on a lot of typical MPB tropes without ever doing anything to amaze. I'm not totally infatuated with this, but it's still great, and once again, is the Anglosphere even trying?

John Coltrane - Crescent (April 27, 1964 - June 1, 1964)

Very full and imagined feeling in execution, albeit with a few kinks left in the design phase. Coltrane is treading new water on this album; while still operating in the bop stratum, glimpses of avantgarde and spiritual directions frequently reveal themselves. The instrumentation, particularly the rhythm section, feel more loose and free than previous recordings with this quartet. Artists have a little more reign to explore individual ideas, particularly Tyner, who battles with Coltrane for the focal point throughout the album. Jones’ drumming is both exciting and complimentary to the set, a welcome upgrade in individuality from ‘Coltrane’ and ‘Ballads’, which rang a little more traditional and mechanical.

The compositions and structure leave a little to be desired. Much like his eponymous 1962 album, the opposing styles clash more than compliment, leaving the album with disjointed, un-unified feeling. If the target was a melting pot of ideas, in practice it more closely resembles a salad. Fortunately, while every bite has distinct layers of flavour, it’s still a good salad.

While an obvious developmental step forward, it remains limited in it’s insistence on modal structure and strong blues roots. His foray into a more free and expressive direction is a slow climb of rejecting preconceived notions while still creating a tangible product. While tangible, this specific snapshot in time of a continually morphing artistic direction fails to allow enough personality and emotion to permeate through to the listener for it to be truly great.

Marek Grechuta & Anawa - Marek Grechuta & Anawa (1970)
>poezja śpiewana, progressive pop, baroque pop

Occasionally gets really muddled in its musical theater pretenses, but it works in a lot of varied influences very well while still retaining a large pop sensibility. Grechuta is a charming vocalist, but Anawa's work as a backing band is exceptional. They switch between so many different styles really well, always creating a charming, fun musical landscape. Suffers a bit in it's more intimate, folky moments, but the loud, bombastic, wonderfully pretentious moments are awesome.

Pharmakon - Bestial Burden (2014)
>death industrial

Not even really that shocking or noisy, its boring and uninteresting more than anything. The tracks don't really go anywhere, and most of the field recording-esque additions to the track (like the man coughing) serve no purpose other than to gross the listener out. Pharmakon's vocals are good (especially on the bonus track, a cover of Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang", by far the best thing related to this album) but the instrumentals are incredibly boring and pointless. Not a fan, to say the least, sorry Nyar.
