I have a lowpass filter on my snare, I'm trying to get it to sound more lo-fi or raw, but at the moment it's a clicky mess.
https://clyp.it/zmq5kdne
turn down your sound, it's really loud because I use low volume when I produce.
>>
>>69366574
I sometimes enjoy the æsthetic of having the drums get washed-out by the synths/guitars (e.g. M83's 'Teen Angst") but not quite this much. I can barely hear the snare you're talking about. LPF can help with a lo-fi sound but it can also make it harder and harder to mix. I would highly suggest a LPF and then some harmonic saturation (nothing too crazy, it should be almost a subliminal amount). This will muffle it and take the polish off it but also give it some harmonic bite so it holds its own in the mix.

And do blease rebalance your tracks a little ':|
>>
>>69366655
thanks, it's just a skeleton track, I'm going to record with real guitars once my interface comes in. the guitars are really loud because i just threw on distortion and made it an mp3

Stupid question, but for non-live performers, what is the point of pic related? Is it just to arrange samples so that you can play them vs. do them individually by hand in a DAW? People don't play percussion perfectly in time with these, so do they automatically "snap" in time via the DAW? The same thing be achieved with an MIDI keyboard so why buy this?

I would switch the closed high hat out with a more shorter tighter sounding one. Add some reverb to the snare and a small amount to the hats as well. And I don't know if it's just my headphones but the bass sounds like it's coming mostly from the left. I would try to center it.

Otherwise this is a very good first attempt. It's fun making high hat patterns with trap. Good job friend.

Hello senpaitachi, made something Synthwavy/retro style with FL
Track is almost done (arrangement wise) I'd say, I can't tell if my mixing is any good - well, I can tell that it doesn't really sound professional, but I cannot pinpoint what I could do to improve it.

https://clyp.it/4cjmgjfw
>>
>>69380484
the intro's weaker'n bunny dicks but then it sounds awesome after that. what kinda vibe you going for? for a standalone insturmental i think it needs to develop some more sonic hooks, for a vidya game soundtrack id say it's breddy much done. sounds nice though, 8/10 would listen

>>69380548
sounds cool overall. way too bassy - let the club/rave/block party's sound system add the bass thump. if you add too much it'll sound like garbage everywhere you play it and cause nasty headaches during mastering. little more bite on the rhythmic elements (the wubwubwubwubwubwub needs some resonance or harmonics or something to make it feel more real and rhythmically effective. the "dsssh... dsssh..." snare doesn't vary at all. alternate samples or swtich-up the velocity a little. also more interesting FX - add tiny amounds of reverb to the dead elements and some automated delays would be delicious. the track's begging for that shit.

in terms of the basic mix, play it in the car and you'll know what elements need to be rebalanced pretty quick.
>>

Thank you, my dude.
Definetly right on the bass being too much, that gets pretty obvious when I get up from my desk and walk around, due to my rooms acoustics

I'll tweak that down a bit and will try to rythmical parts more interesting.

I cut down a tree and split the wood into flat sections. Then I form the wood into a a shell and cure it. After attaching the hardware, I go out and kill an animal for the hide. Deer works great, but dog is fine in a pinch. After the hide is dried, we stretch it over the drum.

Anything less than that, you're probably a hack.

Maschine needs to be tethered to a computer so you'll need that laptop either way.

Thinkpads with i7s can be had for that price. I leave mine set a at 8ms total lag through an external card and it chews through multi tracking and production.
>>
>>69384570
It's the most sold synthesizer of all time. It can work just fine. I would buy one, but only for a very low price, and mostly just as a toy. The new version has a built in speaker which is brilliant but it's fuck. How you charge that price for decade old sound engine?

Can anyone recommend a good audio interface without background static? My Scarlett 2i2 just has too much fucking noise if I want the volume at normal levels
>>
>>69386648
there shouldnt be static

what kind of cables are you using
>>
>>69386677
I mean it's done this for years. I'm using stock cables; guitar straight to the box, then from the box straight to my PC. There's static when I have a mic in too, and the only way to get rid of it is to turn the gain down, but anything below like 75% gain is inaudible. I've tried everything over the years to get rid of it but I think it's just fucked
>>
>>69386748
i use a steinberg ur22 interface and it is pretty nice and i cant notice any static

most of the reason why I haven't switched I doubt this is something I might learn semi professionally on but I figure since I'm going this far

not many effects come with reaper so you would have to pirate or download freeware plugins

imo that out of tune pitch bend on the vocal chop should only happen once. the way it repeats so often makes it sound "derivative"

overall good production and aesthetics, but kinda meh as it stands. I think it needs a unique and unexpected bridge section to take it to a different place. kinda like this does https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5dwMYsUFGM

Might ask /g/ but what would be better: low tier monitors (thinking of JBL LSR 305s or Yamaha HS5s) or some decent headphones (in the 150-200€ price range)?

Is there actually anything else possible than sampling a song from the 70ties? Currently I'm working on a song in 4/4, I used a measure from a song from the 80ties! Kick, Snare and Hihat are really THAT certain thing a song can't go without, also chords on every 1/4 measure and mostly major keys.

>>
>>69393702
I have started doing this and I think it adds something. Prince tuned his drum machines and this is why some songs like When Doves Cry don't have basslines.
Some producers like Glitch Mob even EQ stuff based on the frequencies of the key they're in, but I can't be bothered taking it that far.

Isn't "width" in Utility a mid-side matrix though? In other words, 0% width is removing all the "side" channel information and leaving only the "mid" information. Which is mono but everything panned gets either attenuated or completely removed

try to carve out your EQ so the vocal fits into the spectrum with minimal competition. you'll need to maintain intelligibility (bout 2.5k-4k), might want to make room fo sibilince or detail depending on genre (+/-8k), and you'll want to make special room for at least the first and second formants, possibly the fundamental as well, depending on genre.

>>

Percussion often sounds better when it's slightly off, because each millisecond difference for each beat kind of complements the others.

You do still need good timing and serious drum practice, but 100% quantized 4/4 drums often sound extremely boring to me. If you quantize and then add MIDI or effect swing/shuffle, that can be okay, but human playing gives the best control.
>>
>>69373513
I use the shit out of my drum pad. I hate when music has a perfect beat that never is off.

So I use my drum pad and it introduces a more natural sound, sounds a lot more exciting that way.
