"Real punk" died in the 70s. The problem with punk as an ideology is that it's an inherently destructive one, and it has already destroyed all that there was to destroy with regards to rock music. This is why pretty much all bands who explicitly try to play punk rock end up sounding lame or uninspired. I'm not a huge fan of Death Grips, but I can see how what makes them interesting is that they're not trying to play punk rock, they're trying to push the punk ideology in different directions, to destroy what hasn't been destroyed yet so that something new can take over.
