Well at least it didn't get worse....

...Oh wait.
>>
>>69347130
Underrated album imo
>>
>>69347349
Yeah, Modern Love is one of my favorite Bowie tracks.
>>
lets dance is still worth listening to, which can't be said for something like 10 of his duds.
>>
>>69347370
that's what i'm saying
>>
>>69347130
4 great songs rest is enjoyable but obviously filler.
>>
>>69347130
it's a literal 8.5/10 though
>>
>>69347130
It's just more american sounding, I don't think he sold out since it sounds pretty genuine
>>
>>69347370
Modern love is the best pop song of all time imo, sure the whole album isn't great but really such a fantastic song

I mean the singles are okay, but the rest has aged so poorly compared to other albums in his catalog

Didn't help that it felt like an Iggy cover album either

>>
Can't blame him for wanting to make some money after the Berlin Trilogy, those were pretty experimental for a mainstream rockstar like Bowie.

>Berlin Trilogy
nigga Scary Monsters came out in 1980 and had 3 big singles
>>
yeahh haha that album definitely wasn't a continuation of the stylistic progression he had been making his entire career :^)
>>
>>69348589
It wasn't
>>
>>69348589
He went from experimental ambient krautrock to radio-friendly dance music. That's not a progression.
>>
>>69347130

I literally just came to /Mu/ to post this album and say how much I love it. Feel good.
>>
>>69347130
>pop star
>selling out

you what?
If he sold out, he did it in '67
>>
>>69348682
That is progression
It's called "learning how to write a song"
>>
>>69348396
Berlin trilogy is Low, Lodger, and Heroes

fucking pleb
>>
>>69348793
Point being that the Berlin trilogy came before Scary Monsters, which came before Let's Dance

fucking plen faggot go back to /r/music
>>
>>69348793
No. The Berlin trilogy is Let's Dance, Tonight and Never Let Me Down

fuck outta here pleb
>>
Never Let Me Down > Tonight >> Let's Dance.

NLMD is no work of genius, but at least it sounds more like he has a real band behind him, even if that band includes Peter Frampton. And it has his best song of the period, Time Will Crawl.

Real talk: Let's Dance is ass. Modern Love is a great song. Let's Dance is an OK if vapid song. The rest is shit. China Girl is a pale imitation of the original. Ricochet is an alright song that got botched during the recording process. The re-recording of Cat People sucks.

At least Tonight has that cool as fuck marimba all throughout it. Blue Jean and Loving the Alien are fucking good. Maybe the covers are fluff, but they're better fluff than Let's Dance's.
>>
>>69348764
But the songs he wrote on "Let's Dance" are some of his worst. It's a fun party music but doesn't have the depth of his earlier stuff.
>>
>>69348848
These are close to my thoughts on all 3 honestly. They're all great fun though, they definitely get more hate than they deserve.
>>
>>69348898
Your opinions are weird but I still love you.

>>69348848
Not you yet though, I just met you.

I still can't give NLMD higher than a 3.

Let's Dance is an 8, and Tonight is a 9 for me.
>>
NLMD is easily the worst of the three. You can feel that Bowie was just trying to stay in it. Most of the tracks sound like something you'd ghostwrite for some young pop artist. Which I suppose isn't far-off. He had a disconnect with the audience he was appealing to and it showed in what he did following these three albums.

Tonight and Let's Dance have a similar ratio for successful tracks, so they're up in the air for me.
>>
>>69349002
The album containing Time Will Crawl, Day-In Day-Out & the title track could never be the worst, those are underrated classics

All Tonight has going for it is Loving the Alien, the rest is incredibly forgettable
>>
>>69348898
Yeah, I can still put on Let's Dance and have an OK time if I don't pay super close attention. Only the side closers really take me out of it.

>>69348922
>>69349002
I mean, I understand the NLMD hate, but I also don't. I can kind of feel it out intuitively. It has something to do with how it doesn't really have a dynamic range to it. The most salient criticism seems to be that it's too "noisy" or something, but I think that adds favorably to it. I'm listening to it right now and I think the cluttered arrangements reward close listening. Again, it's not Mozart, but if we're judging it against the already-stupid dance music category, it's pretty intelligent songwriting.
>>
>>69347904
I enjoy Blue Jean.
>>
>>69349078
The way I see it is the other 2 has at least SOMETHING that stands out musically about them.

Let's Dance had a lot of great pop hits that made him successful in the U.S. with some great Niles Rogers production.

Tonight had lighter, poppier tracks with some occasional reggae influences (Don't Look Down, Tonight, Tumble and Twirl).

While Never Let Me Down was just hard rock that sounded like sitcom themes half of the time (ESPECIALLY Too Dizzy)
>>
>>69349127
I see what you mean. It does struggle a bit with its identity. But I like the stage aspects of NLMD. I find it has a unifying carnivalesque atmosphere to it that I tend to like in music. I bet a lot of people think Glass Spider is cheesy, but I dig it. Same with Zeroes.
>>
>>69349078
It's not badly produced, it's just really dense. There's tons of stuff going on, which Bowie doesn't always have on his albums. Repeated listening definitely is rewarding with Never Let Me Down.
>>
>>69349320
>There's tons of stuff going on
I never really got that feeling when I was listening to it, I thought it was just your standard 3 person backing band (Guitars, bass, 80s-as-fuck-drums). I mean of course there's the occasional effect or additional instrument but for the most part I just got guitar and drums.

I think that's another reason I liked Tonight a lot more. It had tons of musical variety, brass sections, marimbas, synths, drum machines, all sorts of stuff.
>>
One thing I found hilarious if everyone comparing the harmonicas in I Can't Give Everything Away immediately to A New Career in a New Town, when they're more similar to the harmonicas in Never Let Me Down's title track
>>
>>69349378
Let's Dance and Tonight are more or less organic recordings. Never Let Me Down has more sophisticated programming. Some of the guitar/piano playing you hear on it is synthetic, but Bowie/Alomar were playing it on older gear, so it doesn't sound super fake.
>>
>>69349508
Was there much Piano on the album? I remember some on 'Time Will Crawl', not much else.

I think there was some synth on 'Day In Day Out' too.

And that clapping on god damn Shining Star had to be a drum machine...

Fucking Shining Star...
>>
>>69349573
I should have just said "keyboards." I didn't mean literal piano. But yeah, a lot of the elements, not just the usual synth stuff, is faked on NLMD if you listen closely. I wouldn't be surprised if you're right about the clapping.
>>
>>69349643
The clapping HAS to be a drum machine. I can just feel it.
I don't know why the 80s drum machines are usually so much worse than 90s drum machines just....

Fucking Shining Star...Almost as bad as Wishful Beginnings.
>>
>>69349676
That's my favourite track on NLMD though :^)
>>
>>69349676

Next Day. Heathen is so sluggish. Not every Next Day song is a winner but at least they're concise.

Heathen. Sure, it has some tracks that would have been better off on Hours, but the majority of songs are very good and flow nicely. (kind of the way Song for Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol get a pass on Hunky Dory)

The Next Day has some strong hooks, but it's lyrically dense and there's no coherent scheme or tracking order.
>>
>>69350084
The Next Day
>>
>>69350084
Heathen is more emotional, I found The Next Day a bit... Mellow dramatic for its own good?

you mean banked like a motherfucker? silly notions like "selling out" proves OP is an adolescent-minded twat. Modern Love, China Girl, and Let's Dance are seminal 80's Bowie. sure, he was in a rut the rest of the 80's, but at least he capitalized on his near decade long writer's block.
>>
>>69352150
imagine putting the needle down in 1980 and your introduction to the record is a bunch of angular guitar playing, Japanese, and Bowie screeching like a madman.
>>
>>69348095
>>69348133
I listened to his Don't Look Down cover for the first time a few days ago. While it left a sour taste in my mouth considering that I love the original song, I will give it credit for sounding radically different enough that it's somewhat enjoyable

Sorry senpai, just trying to be funny.

My opinion goes to Heathen for being a little "experimental" and for having Cactus cover from Pixies.

The Next Day feels a lot like generic light rock.

That's pretty damn accurate. Nice.
