imo both it and SoE are 9/10 because they beautifully capture the emotions of solitude, loneliness, melancholy, yet hopefulness and spirituality. I love how melodies materialize out of thin air and dissipate into murkiness again. It sounds barren, then it doesn't, and it's just gorgeous. Perfect night walking music.
You don't have to agree and quite frankly I don't really care if you do or not. Those are just reasons why I like it.

One of the 20-30 best albums of all time

11. Favorite album ever for me
Both SOE and LS sound like cheesy New Age junk but with more instruments. On par with third wave crescendo core post-rock cheese.

numerical ratings are stupid.

this guy did a good job of describing it >>69342532
also, though, it's by far the most subtle album i've ever listened to. any note that's there even if it's barely audible, and only lasts for a milisecond, is there with purpose. There's no more and no less than there needs to be. Ultimate restraint with composition.
And, as a recording artist, the recording methods were just fascinating. When reading about them you quickly realize that above all else, this was a jazz album molded (in a post-bitches-brew sense...or in a IASW sense) into post-rock.
