Not all dance music is EDM. this is especially notable in Latin America, where many popular dance forms have their own musical genre (salsa, tango, etc.) Other regional examples include waltz music and mbalax from Senegal.

The other thing to note is that while most dance-pop has electronic instrumentation, since the focus is on pop structure and vocals rather than electronics, rhythm, or beat, it's considered a different genre. That division is fading as major pop artists adopt more and more from house music, though

EDM is for dumbass Americans who don't know anything about dance music despite inventing a lot of it. Stylistically it's all derived from shitty electro House.

Dance music is everything else under the umbrella term of electronic music which someone could dance to. Closest things to EDM within that would be like Happy Hardcore or Hardstyle or something (except they can be quite good sometimes).

EDM is a blanket term for post-electro progressive house, mostly referring to arena DJ's.

EDM is the bastard american son of real dance music which was developed in europe though most of if was actually born in gay clubs in detroit and chicago. Before EDM, the closest thing to it was Big Beat, the closest rockn'roll americans got to accept guitar-less music. After hip hop became the pop music of the new century, Americans didn't care about their music not having guitars anymore so they accepted a retarded version of electro as their electronic dance music.

dance music is less mainstream than EDM

i only listen to EDM, sometimes some really old dance from the early 2000s
