is this repetitive trash?

https://clyp.it/ugon2tx3
>>
I need a USB audio interface. Needs to have 4 mic inputs (for drums) and 3 instrument inputs (for stereo synth and guitar). I can't spend more than $250.

I might be willing to only get a 2-mic setup but idk if I'll be happy with that. The main thing is I'm tired of switching cables all the time and I'd prefer to just have everything plugged in permanently. I think it would greatly increase productivity if I didn't have to change cables every time I want to record guitar after recording drums.

Does anyone have any suggestions? The Tascam 16x08 seems nice and has good reviews.

>>69332723
not too repetitive, but very loud. It sounds as though it was mastered at 0db with little to no headroom. I like the panning and pads in the track. The song sounds very wide, I would suggest lightening up on the bass drum's stereo width. Same goes for other percussion

>>69332908

>>
>>69338775
there's not a whole lot going on at once. it's fast so it might give you the illusion that a lot is going on but it's all really fast and one comes after the other so they can distort all they want. they're just distorting their drums with a limiter on the master for the loudness.
>>
>>69338916
That would make sense. I guess I'll just mix the way I have been to get that sound.

I have a question for you /prod/ guys,
so I finally caved in and learned what is sidechain compression and how to set it up.
The problem though is that I have mostly seen tips to sidechain kicks and bass cause obviously they hide themselves BUT !
Is it the only worthly utilisation ? and if not how do you know what to side chain with what ? Using frequencies I guess but differents instruments / samples / vocals leads to differents frequencies and I feel like it would take a great amount of time to sidechain every parts of my drums for example with certain instruments / samples / vocals and so on...
TL;DR : is it worth it to do other sidechain compression than the kick and the bass ? (is it even worth it on non continue chord bass, like a live bass ?) do you sidechain other things than the drums ?

Already been a month m8. The thing is I'm moving in Jan so if I don't get them I have to cancel the order and then go without them. The country I'm going to is not what distributors consider a "competitive" or "viable" marketplace so they'll end-up costing me triple if I buy them there. Which means I could have just bought the damn Rodes here. FUCK

FUCK

You're right though. I fucking bet it will. Which is fucked because that means they'd miss sales for the whole Christmas season. Litchrally no retailer has them in stock right now, which is disconcerting af †bh ƒam

hey dudes, trying my hand at creating a DIY synth, super-small form factor, probably gonna fit it in an old tobacco tin. It's going to be a gift for my friend who's into noise/folk-punk production and wants to experiment a bit.

So, I'm probably gonna go with the basic APC squarewave circuit on a breadboard, but what can I add to that while staying within a budget of under ninety dollars?

I know very little about sound synthesis, so this idea might sound dumb and might not even be possible, but I'd like him to be able to trigger synth output with his microphone. So, he could blow into the mic and a corresponding sound would come out of the synth, shit like that. Doesn't have to be accurate or anything.
>>
>>69344885

Look at schmitt trigger circuits - they basically turn a variable-level signal (from a mic for example) into a square wave which (with some amplification) you could use as an on-off trigger for your oscillator.

Also if the circuit you have doesn't have a filter you could maybe look into one of those too.
>>
Been toiling around with this for a few weeks.

https://clyp.it/2dn2zwbk

Been struggling with where to go from there. Thoughts on it so far?
>>
How does this sound so far?
What would you add to this?
https://clyp.it/tyn5omhp
>>
>>69345017
alright, will look into later, but from your description of it (which i'm just barely grasping because i'm new at this), i don't think it's what i want.

i don't want it to just turn the osc on/off, i want it to actually control the sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R5phyLVxjE

like, in this video, he presents two different oscillators. one uses knobs to control the sound while the other uses CDS cells to control the sound. i'd like to cut those out completely (or keep them as a secondary option) and instead use input from a microphone to control the sound.

i don't think it can be too difficult, right, because a microphone outputs voltage that varies depending on what goes into it, right? so the osc would just need to be able to read that voltage.

this'll be my first time even messing with a breadboard, so while i'd be fine using a guide to create a knob-based one, i have no clue what kind of hardware i'd need to build the one i'd like to build.
>>
>>69345017
>a square wave

I should probably clarify - not exactly a square wave, what it does is it adds hysteresis to the signal, think of it like an electrical version of inertia, so the mic signal will be turned into a more steady trigger signal that has only two states - high (on) or low (off).

It'll allow for more steady operation of the oscillator, but I'd make the schmitt trigger switchable in or out, so you can have the more chaotic triggering from the bare mic sigal too if you want.

>>69345124
The oscillator is voltage-controlled, so the voltage from the mic (the level of the incoming audio, once amplified) could control the pitch of the oscillator.

Triggering the oscillator is an on-off operation however and that would be done with the schmitt trigger.
>>
>>69345183
alright. i really appreciate the info. couple more questions: would it be possible to have two bits controlling the audio? so i could have the knob setup and the audio/mic input as two seperate options?
>>

>>
>>69345334

>>
>>69345281

It'll read them yeah, but it won't track pitch without additional circuitry - all it would do in the method I've mentioned is map the level of an incoming sound to the pitch of the oscillator.

And yeah, you'd still be able to have controls on the box itself to change the pitch - all you're doing in either section is adjusting a voltage going to the pitch control of the oscillator. You'd need to make sure you're not going to over-volt the oscillator though so I'd have some trim pots in there for calibration.

I have a sp-555 going into ableton, I made a loop by gibbering into a mxl 990 with delay and used the d-beam synth and chromatic ps to make the chords. The pounding bass is a live lite instument rack with overdrive and whatnot.

I just bought an audio interface so i've been experimenting with those capabilities. got pic related at guitar center for $144, anyone know if it's particularly bad or good? It sounds good to me but experience is subjective etc etc. I can still return it and get a different one.

For the main glitchy synths I've just got a couple of LFOs of the frequency and volume, and then I put a gate on it, so only some of the sound comes through. Gets that really random stuttery sound.

The rest is just a shit tonne of random samples, and synths I've thrown together.

If you're using ableton a really good way to get random glitchy percussion rhythms is to load a shit tonne of samples into a sampler, and then use a chain selector to cycle through the samples quickly as ur playing them.

find music that isnt boring to you and deconstruct it, copy it, you will start to learn shit through this

you could even go as far as to literally copy a track that interests you. see if you can make it sound extremely similar for practice.

I've actually heard that several times now. I don't really want to copy but it seems to be the only I can achieve the results I need. Thanks

Did you expect it to happen overnight? These other producers have years of experience, just try your best.

Nah, I really want to create my own sound though.

Not everyone has a creative mind Anon
If your music isn't interesting perhaps you shouldn't create art
That said learning other people's songs will get your mind thinking differently

>Not everyone has a creative mind Anon
>If your music isn't interesting perhaps you shouldn't create art
Nah that's BS. I can create interesting music, I'm just really new at the moment so I need to learn more. I'll continue to impove throught my music career and maybe I'll eventually reach a point where I'm truly satisfied with my body of work.

>That said learning other people's songs will get your mind thinking differently
Agreed, I'll work on covering a couple songs
>>
>>69364333
that takes years and years of practice before you start making unique sounding misc.
>>
>>69364333
worry about learning what the fuck you are doing first, youll definitely have no issues creating your own sound once you have the experience.

split the difference, though...

while you are learning set aside some tracks where you just experiment and mess around doing dumb shit.

I want to reduce the latency on a midi instrument I curretnly use via a midi to usb cable.
Will buying an audio interface help get closer to zero latency?
If so, Focusrite 2I4 or Presonus AudioBox 22 VSL? (or any alternative)
>>
>>69365523
Try adjusting the buffer in your daw preferences to a lower number, and see if this gives you an improvement.
>>
>>69365571
I did that in the Asio4all interface, but I'll try in the daw (Reaper) when I get back home, thanks.
>>
>>69365523
a better cpu would help you lower latency because lowering the buffer size draws more cpu ussage

>>69365595
doing it in the daw will work
