This is a stupid new rule. I do give feedback (lots), but I always do it in a different post to the ones with my clyps in. I don't want people to go easy on me depending on whether I was nice or constructive to other people.

You kinda fucked up but it's still a pretty good keyboard.

Get an LDP-8 to go with it, they're dirt cheap.
>>
>>69289791
This happened to me couple of months ago, I never did finish that song.
>>
>>69289845
Oh yeah I know, but I wasn't going to find a 49-key by a well-known company for below $100 so I decided to find something smaller with knobs afterwards to complement the keyboard, something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F9SX2EE/ref=twister_B00VEMRM86?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I however, have no idea if Novation stuff is good.
There's also the Arturia BeatStep.

Then there's the option of canceling now then paying more for the Oxygen MKIV instead. Should I do it?

>>
>>69290624
>I was getting ready to rip on you when you said boom bap (whatever the fuck that means)
Boom Bap was a massively popular style of hip hop in the eastern United States during the 1990s. The sound originated in the mid-to-late 1980s, pioneered by groups like Boogie Down Productions and the Juice Crew All Stars. The beats consist of many variations on a simple theme: a booming kick drum followed by hard-hitting snares. The MC generally times their delivery to match the pattern laid out by the beat (notable off-beat exceptions include Masta Ace and RZA), creating a sound focused on the percussive relationship between drums and MCs.
>>
>>69290656
>both remixes
Next time remix something good.
>>
>>69290691
sorry I don't like shitty hiphop or something
I remixed those songs because I had access to the vocal stems and liked the lyrical content.
>>
>>69290702
That's like saying I painted using my own shit because I had a steady supply of it.
>>
>>69290708
What? Lol, that analogy doesn't fit. I'm not just going to shit my synths and beat on top of someone else's call it my work.

A remix, to me, is when you get those resources the original creator(s) had and you make it your own. Not just put a shitty beat on top of some other dude's shitty beat and call it a remix.
>>
update from the shit I posted yesterday night. I tried to listen to what people pointed out as major flaws (shit being too fuzzy and overcrowded), but at the end of the day it still suffers from being baby's first chords and melodies - the track.

The synth at 0:32 will probably get the axe (as someone had suggested before), I thought by changing the synth I could make the melody work, but it's still very bad

https://clyp.it/ylix220g

it's only my second track ever p-pls no bully
>>
>>69290721

>A remix, to me, is when you get those resources the original creator(s) had and you make it your own. Not just put a shitty beat on top of some other dude's shitty beat and call it a remix.
If this is the case, what you have done is not a remix.
>>
>>69290727
I think the drums have got a lot more potential but you need different drum sounds.
>>
>>69290727
the second half is shit and i turned it off that overly distorted synth is gay as fuck the first half is decent though
>>
>>69290728
No, it doesn't fit man. Its like if you try to go get some food, but your fridge is empty. What, do you expect to just pull something out of my ass? I've remixed on top of songs before and it's no fun.

I liked the songs they were from too, if that helps any. Lyrics mean something, I like the melody, ect. I don't see a problem with that.

I don't know what you're refuting. Either me not following my own definition of a remix or my own definition not matching yours. Either way, I made all of it except for the vocals, so I don't know why you don't think it's a remix lol.
>>
>>69290747
thanks mate. I do need to learn drum machines. And use more than fucking snares and kicks.

>>69290758

Your music sounds like Owl City, which is on my top 5 most hated ever bands list. If you ever started performing that music in my physical presence, I would beat you to the fucking ground, then beat your face through the ground. Please never post another clyp. Please never make any more music. You are literally making music worse with your sacharine chords and autotuned cheesy melody driven bullshit.

Fine keep posting. But don't be surprised if you don't get the same circlejerk response here that you get from your friends IRL. We will be brutal. Especially to MOR shite like yours.

The guys who post stuff with dischordant synths etc are usually looking for help, and we're glad to give it. Unless it's especially bad and shows no rhythm or whatever.

But you, you obviously know enough music theory/production to not need that kind of basica help. And you're using your knowledge to create truly awful music. I'd sooner listent o Merzbow than your shit and I hate Merzbow.

can someone explain why stereo songs feel like they're floating, but mono songs feel like they're locked to the ground?

Not necessarily locked, but certain sounds feel more present than all airy and far away like stereo songs do.

>>

Okay so- this is good, I love the beat. But those synths REALLY hurt my ears. You need to learn to refrence, because if your headphones are really dull in the high end and you make something that sounds right to you, its going to be super sharp to people with normal headphones.

Anyway, if you can bring down the 4-7k range by two or three db, that should help considerably.

Sidechaining the drums to the bass will help considerably. But some compression on the master would help even more to get your bass to agree with your beat. I'd personally put a faster decay on it as well, though that's just me.
>>
>>69293625

Psychoacoustics.

Your brain uses what it picks up as phase relationships between sounds arriving at each ear (and tiny differences in arrival times at the same) to work out where it believes sounds are coming from in the 3D space - if you have your monitor speakers set up and positioned properly, a dual-mono sound (an identical sound played at the same level from both speakers) will seem (to your brain) to be coming from neither speaker but instead from a single "virtual" speaker located right between them, similarly the same sound with one side slightly time-delayed will be interpreted by your brain as having more stereo width.
>>
>>69295626

>>69295486
It looks gorgeous but it's overpriced shite. Not worth the money at all.
>>
>>69293542
Indifferent. People have been taking ideas from other music, both intentionally and unintentionally, since the beginning of time. I'm not trying to bite a part note for note, or even try to emulate someone's style, I just make stuff I like. I look at it as making something unique is a secondary goal, being able to be the best representation amongst my contemporaries is the primary. I'm not the first person to use 7th chords or a diatonic scale or whatever, and a lot of my writing comes from improvising, occasionally I improvise something and it ends up sounding like something else. It's not the end of the world for me, but if I can't make it work and sound better than what it sounds like I don't use it, no point to.

Drum breaks were the back bone of early hip hop til(and even after) drum machines started hitting the used market. It was at one point the standard for putting music on a track before computers and midi changed the game, til money started showing up in hip hop and talented musicians started manning synthesizers, tr808s and DAT machines to create tracks. Still is widely used, but samples open you up for potential lawsuits, Pharoah monch would have taken off in the 90s, but they shelved his album because they didn't clear the godzilla sample. They released it eventually without that song, but his initial hype fizzled out. More recently Timbaland got sued for an uncleared sample.

I don't use samples much, but when I do I usually throw them in Slicex in FL Studio and chop them up. If you're lucky to get an old recording with clean hats you can cut out from 2 different parts of the loop you can get this really cool glitchy out of phase sound having them play 8th notes alternating back to back.

Sampling is something I always wanted to learn, but even though I have a broad taste in music that goes across decades and genres I don't have enough to pick good samples and keep them interesting. It seems you really have to take a lot of time listening to music you've never heard and taking notes of the stuff you like so you can go back and grab it later.

Some people look down on it saying you're not creating anything, but most music is created by either collaboration in composition or performance, I see it as your contribution to both aspects.

Is it better to stick to soft synths than buy any actual synths.
>>
>>69305598
Depends. Are you going to just release tracks to soundcloud, or do you perform live?

I play in 2 bands that regularly gig, so I need to have keyboard synths. If I didn't play live, I'd probably still have analog synths, but it would make /prod/ reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee much harder.

I think MIDI is going to outlast USB
I know it seems impossible, but USB is not very durable mechanically, whereas I don't think I've ever found any fault midi sockets. Midi cables tend to hold up well too.

I think that USB needs to be replaced with some sort of serial bus with a machined connector, not a stamped one like USB. The apple lightning adapter comes to mind as a viable replacement.

MIDI is going to last because there still isn't going to be an easier way of plugging two synths into one keyboard than a plain old fashioned MIDI cable.

>>69302238
It is not a simple thing to do. Its like learning a few languages. I mean if you're a good musician and you had a techy friend or paid someone to mix your stuff then maybe you could put out something good. But it is not easy and the main thing that will get in your way is yourself / motivation because creating a good track stops being fun pretty quickly and becomes work. Also doing it alone there are numerous things that'll sound wrong to you and you won't know why, and don't know what you don't know. Music production is something you can dip into if you're prepared for it to be a hobby, but if you want to create anything of quality you will have to spend years learning.
>>
>>69303907

I'd put a dash of delay on the drums

http://www.thewhippinpost.co.uk/tools/delay-time-calculator.htm
>>
>>69311775
On which track? The first or the second? Both of them already have pretty heavy reverb on them. Are you sure delay won't be too much?
>>
>>69311822
Just they sound to me too dry, I'm thinking the snare / clap. I read in a mixing book I think its mixing secrets for small studio about the way barely perceptible delay kind of fattens up things particularly vocals and drums but anything. He talks about matching to tempo as well. That dry sound you have makes it sound amateurish to me, no offense.

Also some of the balances of the synths aren't quite right, as in they stand out too much.

You're stuff's getting there though, some of the best I've heard here, though I don't listen to much.

They are a regular mic anon. They're just a matched pair so they're tested to make sure they sound as identical as possible. They also have 6 removeable capsules so you can make each mic omni, cardioid, or hypercardioid. The fact that they have built-in filters and pads is great too.

Also, there are lots of trade-off you have to consider when buying mics. Highly sensitive mics aren't as good for close miking/loud sources, and dynamic range, max SPL, S/N ratio, off-axis response, etc. all have to be considered based on what your priorities are.

This pair of mics is far-and-away the best choice for me, for what I do. Quiet, sensitive, high SPL handling, not the world's great off-axis response but much better than cheaper mics. They spec-out close to the similar $900 Rode matched pair of NT55s. It was a stretch for me to afford these and if they never restock and cancel my order I'm gonna be devastated. I have the next best thing lower (MXL 603s) and I'm not crazy happy with them anymore. Can't even nearly afford the Rodes. ':|

i take it you don't like vocoded vocals?

https://youtu.be/9oQsKRyihEA?t=38 like explained here in this video, you don't always really need to have overly complex drums in a song to make it sound good. The reason I went with a more basic kick/snare setup rather than going crazy like I do from time to time is because of the dotted quarter note structure of the entire song (long short rythm) which typically, in about every time this shows up in popular music, is supported by a more simple and straightforward drum pattern, like the one I laid down for this track.

if you prefer more advanced drum samples, one could find them in this current wip https://clyp.it/bmqx10ac

The reason analog > digital is because of it going through an actual, physical board. For sound, the inequalities and texture this gives the sound is really hard to get on anything else. As a great sound engineer put it, digital is unforgiving but analog is very flattering.

If you had money, I'd recommend building a modular rack. But those can go into the thousands. Right now, I recommend you either pirate or actually by NI Massive and get to learn it. Envelopes, oscillators, filters, and about everything you'll need to know- same thing going for the micro/minibrute. From there, you can get more expensive and more advanced things to tailor more to what it is you wish to create- though those should be awesome all around synths to help you get started.

you should try serum because you can import and create wavetables instead of being limited to the ones that come with massive

That and Massive is nothing more than a sampler. It's cool, but it's MASSIVELY overrated
>>
>>69326127
nooo no need for serum, its a shit program. you honestly don't need more than what massive offers you. if you can't figure out how to make compelling music with the many things massive has over serum then you should probably rethink the way you use a synthesizer.
>>
but what if he wants to do complex fm shit?
>>
>>69326196
there's no need to do fucking fm synths, especially when he's first starting out. fm is reaaaally hard- trust me, i've been making music for several years on these things. both analog and digital. fm is something you really don't need to go into unless you have to.
>>
>>69326181
you can find and import the massive wavetables into serum
>>
>>69326237
what if he want to do ezmode brostep
>>
>>69326255

dont do this
>>
>>69326086
Oh I see, a musician friend who happen to have one of those Arturia 49-keys also told me to seek midis/synths with midi ports over usb-only. My problem is all about budget so it's impossible for now.

But yeah, I can sell the Oxygen anytime and get a better keyboard.

Nigga I'm still babytier on this, no need to throw me down such a cliff.

What about Terror house?
>>
>>69325625
>https://clyp.it/qcaqys52
no, they're just really high in the mix. bring everything up then use side compression to try and achieve the same thump
>>
>>69326451
its aight but the thing about all of the terror genres in general (except terrorcor) as well as brostep is this:

when it is done very well, it it good fun, but there is so much shitty, low effort music being made in those genres that it becomes hard to distinguish the good stuff from the horrible stuff. It's the same thing with things like jump-up dnb.
>>
>>69326373
sylenth is a pretty good synth and it has low cpu usage and there is alot of tutorials using it
>>
>>69325408
wow that sounds weird, I think you just need a better mix and then you're set. I like the vocals so maybe the mix isn't too far off from something really interesting mix wise
>>
>>69325408
That's very interesting sounding, I like it. You're mixing in headphones aren't you?

I thought a sampler was a VST that you had a bunch of .wavs in and shit... Like you couldn't really make it into anything else... did I get that wrong?
>>
>>69326237
fm is really hard? been making music for around 6 months and I already understand a lot of sound synthesis, including fm. Sounds like you're just a preset fag who was too scared to try something new.

just practice more i think the bass part sounds kind of bad and the melody is autistic but atleast youre being more creative than most of the people who post here
>>
>>69327043
:T
well obviously you don't know anything
the thing is, a sampler modifies an audio file. might pitch it, might do all sorts of different things.
Massive generates the sound, doesn't just modify something that already exists, through something called a tri oscillator.

>>69327047
FM is hard to get right. It sounds weird even when you do. You can do it, I've never really wanted to fuck with FM because there's honestly no point but the times I have its been something I regretted getting into.
>>
>>69327351
ah, when i looked in them a long time ago they were .wav files. I thought all you could do to it was make it sound higher pitch but not right?...
>>
If I want to record guitar and vocals, but don't want to spend $130 CDN on both Shures, which one should I get? The 57 or 58?
>>
>>69327394
'58

it's the same mic, the only difference is the grille. the 58 grille has a windscreen inside so it's good for vocals, and the 57 doesn't. there's a slight attenuation of very high frequencies with the 58 because of that, but really it's the exact same mic but more versatile
>>
>>69327394
I like the 57 much more for guitar, hate it for vocals. 57 takes less of everything around it , perfect for a static object. But guitar speakers are loud, you shouldn't have to worry about picking up anything but the sound of a bad room anyways.

I like the 58 much more for vocals, it's a little more forgiving with movement where as the 57 you have be ready to deep throat it to get a clear take.

I'd get the 58, then when you can afford a good vocal mic you can sell it and get a 57.

Like the other anon said, it's the same mic, one's capsule is just surrounded on the sides more.

But if you're recording with your hand instead of a mic stand and like to cup the mic(both are bad practice) a 57 might be better.

If you have common sense though, 58. You can get passable guitar takes with an aluminum can and some wire if you position it properly.

What's the difference between a hybrid synth and an analog model one? Does a hybrid have actual analog parts whereas a modeling one just tried to sound like analog?
