The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Mineral - Endserenading
This has some cool mathy rhythmic stuff and the instrumentals overall were enjoyable to listen to, but every song started to sound the same towards the end. There weren't enough impact moments in my opinion and the album overall tended to stay at one energy level. I liked most of the lyrical stuff but again by the end it was starting to wear down on me. blue triangle/10

co, I think you predicted my thoughts on both these albums, so you win big!

Nara Leão - Dez anos depois (1971)
>bossa nova, MPB

There's nothing incredibly special about this album, really. It's a bossa nova standards album, to put it simply. Pieces by Jobim, Buarque, Powell, and de Moraes have all been performed by their respective writers before, but Leão's performances inject new life into every single one of them. Leão's vocals are incredible, they're smooth and beautiful but passionate and lively, which is something I could say about the instrumentation as well. The first LP is totally acoustic, which allows Leão's vocals to flourish while still putting a lot of emphasis on the beautiful, unobtrusive guitar work. The second LP is a lot fuller, with pianos and drums and string sections abound, losing a lot of the intimacy of the first LP but making up for that with sheer enjoyability. I do prefer the first LP by a pretty decent amount, but put together as a whole this is a wonderful album, through and through.

3.5-

Stan Getz & João Gilberto featuring Antônio Carlos Jobim - Getz / Gilberto (1964)
>bossa nova, jazz

It's literally all about "The Girl From Ipanema". It's one of the most recorded songs in history for a pretty good reason, the melody is beautiful and it's so effervescently chill and atmospheric, boasting an incredible vocal performance from Astrud Gilberto. The rest is just glorified background music. Occasionally João Gilberto has a pretty vocal part, Jobim's piano work definitely adds a decent bit, and there's obviously nothing really /bad/ about it, but Getz seems to exist only to add to the chesse factor, which sucks because he's an incredible saxophonist, but his presence here is just really poor. It's a big injustice that /this/ is the #1 bossa nova album on RYM.

Phil Ochs - I Ain't Marching Anymore (1965)
>contemporary folk, singer/songwriter

Lyrically, it's an absolutely perfect album. Ochs' lyrics are funny, witty, complex, beautiful, and above all, wonderfully insightful. He uses so many different metaphors to reference unrest and wrongdoings without ever blatantly shouting out his point, and it's wonderful. The vocals are pretty great as well, very passionate and he sings his songs so naturally, there's no pretention involved. No matter how great the lyrics and the delivery of the lyrics are, it gets stale. The chord progressions are basic, and the traditional songs lack the conviction and passion Ochs delivers so effortlessly on his original songs. Ochs' lyrics with a better songwriter would be incredible, but as it stands we're left with a spotty, overlong album with some incredible lyrics and a lot of passion. Also, the title track is fucking /amazing/.

nice long computer break to spend time with family, but know we're back to using the internet to justify tastes in music

Joan Baez - s/t

Really powerful yet relaxing piece of folk from the genre's most rebellious period. The album consists solely of interpretations of classic folk tunes, enhanced by Baez's strong voice. The guitar work is effective, but sort of takes a backseat to Baez's singing. When it's all put together, the songs on this album demand attention. Baez sings from low to very high volumes, and the passion in her voice is quite apparent and very rewarding to hear.. The biggest flaw this album has is it's lack of variety, and this starts to become increasingly apparent as the album winds down. I gave this three listens, and on the third, I had trouble finishing it and chose to put something else on. There just isn't much to discover on a deep level. However, it's surface value is a damn good piece of folk.

GOOD.

This was a good day, lovely recs Thomas, thanks!
>Big Ups - Before a Million Universes
Slint can't be unheard here, especially the vocals almost seem identical. They try to put the focus in the climatic structures, there's more than one 'I miss you' style imitation, unfotunately not one with the same impact Slint can deliver. Overall the structures seem less thought-through and more impulsive, it's much closer to Tweez era Slint.
But reducing it to a Slint copy would be unfair, it definitely has its own charme, with its clear modern post-hardcore influences and a in parts surprisingly unique guitar style. It's incredible formulaic, but I won't complain as long as the formula works.
>The KVB - Of Desire
Absolutely gorgeous ethereal, shoegazy post-punk, all with a lovely synthwave retrostyle layer beneath, wonderfully suitable vocal delivery

If someone is willing to give a poor score to an album from even their absolute favorite genre, it shows an ability to critically evaluate instead of blatant fanboyism.
>>
>>69338689
>I think people too easily give anything from that era a pass despite liking it or not
This sentiment does not only apply to jazz though.
Yeah, I get that some people's ratings may be inflated or deflated to appear "cool".
Perhaps they see an album with acclaim, they may be afraid to give it a low score.
Assuming that everyone's opinion works like this is reductive though. How are you supposed to be able to tell if someone is being superficial or not?

But the opposite can also be true. I think sometimes if people listen to an acclaimed album and think it's a little overrated they will give it a purposefully deflated score just to seem "critical."
>>
>>69338470
Is it not normal for people to listen to more above average music than below? I know we all listen to some stuff that we know nothing about but for the most part we're looking for music we'll like.

I mean my curve is fucked and most stuff is rated half a rating too high probably but i still having more 6+ ratings than below. I'm not really a jazz guy though I only really like spiritual jazz.
>>
>>69338825
Exactly. There is so much internalized and externalized bias that goes into scoring. It is pointless to analyze. All ratings under scrutiny fall apart.
I honestly think it should be done away with entirely, but I find it useful to use some form of scoring system in order to keep track of what I like.

Good points. My understanding is a lot of it is quite *insider* in that those who have the best ear for it are of course the players involved, whereas deciding a jazz album "sounds good" only gets you halfway there.

Well I agree with theSound. Jazz is a pretty old genre with a lot of well established classics. Chances are people who are not that much into the genre take a look at Coltrane, Davis, Blakey, Armstrong or Mingus, and I think their records aren't hard to enjoy at the least, something which could translate into a 6/10 or whatever.

I don't think what you're saying is unreasonable or untrue, but you're describing human nature and its unlikely to change no matter how hard one tries.
Also, generally with music, people seek out what they like, which I'm sure people have pointed out already.

Lots of good points. Good discussion all around.

Speaking of discussion, I've been meaning to ask /daily/ about something Scaruffi said about Moondog:

>His works encompass everything that was known and a lot of what was still unknown. He virtually invented every single genre of rock, electronic and world music.
http://www.scaruffi.com/vol1/moondog.html

What the fuck does this mean? I like a lot of Moondog and he was a really interesting character, but how exactly did he "invent electronic music"? Is this actually true? Is Scaruffi talking out of his ass? Was it lost in translation?

I'd love for any of the Italy-boys of /daily/ to give a rough translation summary of all that shit he says about him.

I think I'm guilty of this as well. The only thing I can think I really love below a 3.00 is Citizen Zombie.

Human beings are social creatures and I think people subconsciously will like/dislike things more or less because of the RYM average score. Or rather, someone could dislike something more because the RYM score is high because they're an edgy cunt.

it was similar to Citizen Zombie with nearly zero punch and the more electronic "trap" influences on percussion and production in general were sometimes cringe-y.

He probably means that he uses motifs that have since become emblematic of a slew of different genres before they were formally established, not that he actually influenced those genres in any substantial way (save for minimalism on which he is a noted influence). He invented musical concepts in the same sense as any self-taught hack can invent the basic triads. Not to say he's a hack himself, he certainly knew more about composition than the average hobby musician at the very least.

Idk for sure if Scaruffi's talking out of his ass there but I sure am.

Crass is essential, as well a Posion Girls
Amebix is a solid choice for the crust punk invason, although I would have gone with Sacrilege

Also Flux sux. Especially that album.

The Ex were totally an anarcho band, though admittedly the more they developed ad musicians, the further from the Crass sound they got. Still, they never lost the scratchy guitars and stream of conscious ranting, even if they did drift closer to Fugazi, Wire, and "world beat"

I love that Flux album, but I'm a big fan of noise rock.

I don't think DOA is a good example of the genre because while they're an amazing band, in sound and scene they're more akin to bands like Bad Brains and Black Flag, who sort of represent the transition point where punk's first wave started to give way to hardcore

>Steve Reid - Rhythmatism
More of the same from Nova, it has the groove that i like in jazz. Kai is the main track to listen to, just groovy as hell for the whole 12 minutes. 4/5

>Dinosaur L - 24-24 Music
This just doesn't quite work, it's not very dancey and it's not very punk or noisy either. The closest it comes to being great is in #7 and Get Set. 2.5+/5

>The 101ers - Elgin Avenue Breakdown
It's cool hearing Joe Strummer pre-Clash. There's only a hint of punk here but overall it's good pub rock. 3/5

>A Frames - A Frames 2
The vaguely goofy sci-fi lyrics, noise rock bass and angular post-punk guitar make for a pretty good album. 3.5/5

>PiL - Commercial Zone
I really should have listened to the official release of these songs first rather than these alternate takes Levene decided to release on his own after leaving the band but I don't have much desire to after hearing this. It's alright, it's PiL doing new wave pop but the groove is gone. Only Lou Reed Pt.2 (Where Are You) sounds like it could have been on one of the first three albums. 3-/5

>De La Soul - The Grind Date
Similar to the PiL album, it's fine but it's not really the classic De La Soul I like. The Flava Flav feature is pretty great. 3/5

OOIOO - Feather Float

It's Yoshimi from Boredoms! Time for fLaNger EfFeCts!!!!! But for real this album is a lot of fun. To me this band's work sounds like Boredoms without all the batshit antics they usually pull, and it ends up being really easy-going and pleasant. There is a really obvious krautrock flair throughout, especially on the opener. Straight up NEU! drum tracks. The band puts together a really colorful set of sounds to compliment the drums and the result is an album that drives forward very quickly and, in true Boredoms fashion, never slows down. Plenty of tribal drum cuts and chanting as well. Basically, if you like Boredoms, I can't see why you wouldn't like this. It lacks the element of surprise that defines my favorite of Boredoms' work after the first half, but it's definitely a cool listen. And they really do put a flanger effect on everything.

GOOD.

two 3.5s in two days, buildings crumble, hell freezes over, cats and dogs are living together!

Jorge Ben - A Tábua de Esmeralda (1974)
>MPB, samba-rock

I know how much you all love Forca Bruta (and it's a great record), but FUCK, this does everything that album does 10x better, which is saying a lot. The arrangements are fuller and the sound is more varied, Ben exercises the potential of his voice to wonderful effect, and the songs are just flat out better. He injects a lot of psych influence into his music with a slight bit of electronic manipulation and a lot of hazy wall of sound production techniques, and they add /so/ much to the songs, which are already wonderful by themselves. "Brother" is the only real low point here, it's uncharacteristically goofy, but seriously, this is a wonderful album and I have no clue why I put it off for so long.

3.5+

渋さ知らズ - Shibuboshi (渋星) (2004)
>jazz fusion

Zorn-esque jazz fusion, does exactly what you'd expect it to do and it's great fun. Not much else to say, it's one-note, repetitive, and a bit overlong, but it's such a sonic assault that it's hard not to at least enjoy every second of it. Guitars are blazing, drums are pounding, horns are skwonking, it's just a flat-out /fun/ album. Can't deny that it gets a bit old, but it's a really solid modern update of Davis' fusion stuff and the experimental big band scene as a whole.

Solange - A Seat at the Table (2016)
>neo-soul, alternative R&B

Pretty solid. It's a very consistent album, there's a clear vision and it's accomplished perfectly, and the general ethereal feel carries over to every track. However, it's really unremarkable, possibly because of this consistency. "Cranes in the Sky" is a stand-out, but it still sticks to a very distinct formula of light, breezy, easy listening R&B. It gets boring, for lack of a better word, no matter how smooth and pretty it may be. The spoken word interludes are a really nice touch, they're timely and they break up the monotony of the actual songs well, and the features are good, a good Lil Wayne feature in 2016 is shocking, but Q-Tip is woefully underused. She deserve the acclaim her sister gets, both regarding the politics of their music and the actual music itself (this feels like it has something to say, Lemonade is just treading old ground while making it diluted as fuck) but I'm still not all too into this.

Quick review bump cause I finally got around to a few of these. Still need a rec from TriangleCubed unless I missed it. Potentially missed one from Wizard, but I'm bout to slide Nyar in soon if I don't get a rec

>Destroyer - Kaputt

Not my usual go-to style of music but these guys know how to work the whole glammy rock/pop thing incredibly well. The little electronic-influenced production on here is fantastic and just puts me at ease. There’s that screaming sax that somehow manages to glide effortlessly over most of these tracks without ever getting too old. As a whole, this is a very enjoyable and relaxing release. The biggest downside is this felt a bit too glossy for my tastes - which is true of a lot of this ‘80s influenced music. Still a very entertaining listen though.

6/10

>Songs Ohia - Didn’t It Rain

Oh my, I absolutely love the atmosphere on here. It’s a nice slowcore-y, folky intersection, with brooding and depressing tracks. Most of them are slow building and about 5 to 7 minutes long, which was a nice change of pace. The band doesn’t rely too much on studio tricks, with a pretty simple lineup of drums, a little bit of droning electronic guitar… and a singer. That or the little touches were subtle enough that I didn’t notice too much. Either way, the feel of this album is just fantastic and the songwriting/singing pretty much matches it. Great all around

It's very pleasant to listen, it has the necessary amount of diversity to it, it's definitely relistenable, I like both the instruments and vocals. There's not much to say about the piece that's not been said a thousand times already, so as far as my own judgement goes, it's one of favorites probably.

King Krule - s/t

Enjoyable but also not good. I can’t fault it, but I also can’t love it.
The studio effects are pleasant but also clearly used as a crutch.
Lyrics aren’t great but also aren’t bad.
Mixed feelings get a mixed rating.

I love the lyrics- though clarity is sometimes an issue. whatever, the performance and style more than make up for that with me. I can google the lyrics I don't understand.
also I disagree that the studio effects are used a crutch- listen to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKpNKfmYTSE
it's an early acoustic sketch of the final track from the EP, and I feel it stands up on its own, poor audio quality notwithstanding.
for me, the studio work is what pushes it from good to great.
now i'm wondering what even oxen might sound like with some pro studio work...
anyway glad you didn't totally pan it!

I like that demo more than the final song; it feels way too polished and perfect which takes the soul out of it imo, especially given the more introspective lyrics on that track.
I'll probably listen to it again given the length, and there's definitely stuff to like so it might grow on me.

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong - Ella and Louis (1956)
>vocal jazz

Like a lot of vocal jazz, totally pleasant and acceptable but frankly boring as all hell. This album's greatest asset is its charisma and how charming it is. Both Fitzgerald and Armstrong have wonderfully charismatic voices and personalities, and they play off each other perfectly, both in regards to their personalities and the contrasting tones of their voices. Besides that, it's just a standard vocal jazz album. The standards are performed well, but I've heard them performed a million times before, and the band doesn't really add anything new to them. It's also far too long, 30 minutes would still be too much of the same sound, but 54 minutes is just egregious, the length makes something so happy and lovable start to seem cheesy and off-putting. Happy and charming, but an irritatingly lengthy, samey listen.

2.0+

Billie Holiday - Lady Sings the Blues (1956)
>vocal jazz, standards

Now this is how I like my vocal jazz. It's still really pleasant, but the gruffness and raw emotion in Holiday's voice adds /so/ much more to the songs. The instrumentation is also a lot more varied, from the opening drum roll of the title track the album varies between bombastic, full-bodied arrangements and sparse, skeletal arrangements perfectly. Can't help but feel the re-recordings are pointless, however. "Strange Fruit" somehow loses a lot of its power here, and sometimes Holiday's weakened croak of a voice can hurt the songs rather than really add to them, but these moments are mostly few and far between.

Glenn Jones - Welcomed Wherever I Go (2014)
>american primitivism

Much better than his release this year (which was still good, don't get me wrong), this is great. The a-side consists of two short, concise primitivism songs, which are good but they lack any sort of real memorability. They're a bit in one ear and out the other, even though Jones' performance is characteristically incredible, and it's a marvel that they were recorded live. The b-side, which consists of one 7-minute track, is incredible. Jones' duets with another guitarist, and they create such a beautiful, full, ominous wall of sound without ever really changing their chords or their picking patterns. Definitely worth the 10 or so bucks I spent on it.

Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Music From the Penguin Café (1976)
>chamber music

They tap into an absolutely beautiful sound at times, mainly on the 12-minute long "The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter", but it's too unfocused to ever really achieve greatness. The orchestra tries to balance a full, new-agey minimalist sound with a sparse, gorgeous folk sound, but the folk always comes out ahead. It's not that the minimalism is bad, there's just too much going on, it's far too busy to latch onto. The folk is absolutely gorgeous, though. The guitar parts are all incredible, and every instrument works together in perfect harmony. Even the vocals add a lot, which is rare for an album like this. I like it, but I'd like an album of just the chambery folk even more.
